Painters Tape - Which Brand?

We have used a lot of painters tape in the past, spent so much money esp Hubby only use ScotchBlue.
Now we are embarking on another painting project, just wonder anybody in OzB has any other experience or idea?
Are there any other brands that's acceptable? (We are painting windows and frames)
Or some tips on not having to use it at all?
Thanks in advance!

I find I spend more time cleaning off the sticky take gunk then the additional time it takes me to cut carefully.

    • That's what I've been wondering.
But Hubby is the Painter and I am the Treasurer. A little sad to see all those tapes literally gone down the drain/bins….

I am no painter by any means but i found 3M the best by far.
If you are going to leave the tape on for longer than a day definitively use the 3M. If you are going to remove it within a few hrs of application i found the cheaper brands are ok.
Most items with painting you get what you pay for. eg a cheap brush compared to a good one is chalk & cheese.

    • Hi Grumps, when you said 3M, you do mean the ScotchBlue isnt it?

      • Yes correct :-)

  • ….spent so much money esp Hubby only use ScotchBlue

You're complaining about cost? The standard width ScotchBlue is only about 20¢/metre (under $10 for a 55 metre roll).

Worst case, it'll be a few dollars per wall and a proper paint job should last at least a few years. Unless you're hubby is good enough with edges to not need the tape, I'd say it's definitely worth the investment.

Just learn to cut in without it. Have painted plenty of rooms. Walls, ceilings, wooden window frames etc. never used tape except for when spray painting. Also don’t like the edges bleeding under the tape.

    • Yes this^^ This is where a good brush pays for itself

Depends on what you're intending to tape up.

Firstly, sugar soap all paint and tape surface. Your tape should stick a lot better but if the surface is corrugated or some kind of slick non-stick material, it is better to not tape as per Euphemistic's comment - the paint will bleed under the tape.

Tapes are also rated for work duration - ie. If it specifies 24hours, it means the tape shouldn't be left for any longer than that. If you leave it for longer, the tape doesn't come off neatly.

Always remove the tape before the paint completely dries or you risk the paint tearing out with the tape.

Ps. I use the one with the friendly bear face.

    • I used the Friendly Bear Face but the Samurai range.

Not for painting but to protect the architraves when I stuck up the temporary blinds.

Rated for 60 days, just removed my last one yesterday about 100 days later, no residue or paint damage, really happy.

  • dont tape it. just cut it in well with a good brush. the brush does most of the work at making a straight line but it has to be a very good brush.
one of the best brushes u can buy is a monarch advance oval cutter.
if u must buy tape norton bear brad 14 day tape is great. its blue and in bunnings.

  • Please do not leave it on the wall / door for weeks as I did….it ripped off more paint which meant more painting.

  • ScotchBlue

  • Thanks All for responding. Shall talk with Hubby over a glass tongiht :-)
