Family Holiday Ideas in Late March/Early April

HI All

I am trying to organise a family holiday for myself for next March/April and wanted to throw it out for ideas. We are Mid 30's, and have three young kids (will be about 7.5, 5 and 1.5 at the time) and are in Melbourne.

We were originally just looking at going to some sort of big4 style holiday park for 7-10 days - somewhere with a pool, activities for the kids etc - and were looking at staying in a cabin (or similar). With a 1 year old we are going to give camping a miss this time. Were originally planning somewhere maybe along the Murray, or beach (within 5-6 hours of Melb).

Then i was thinking that maybe i should be making use of our Amex points and go somewhere a bit further - we have about 200k each (wife and I) as well as $400ea of travel credit to use through their booking website. I guess i was just thinking that since a decent cabin would set you back $300 at least a night in Vic/NSW, we should look at somewhere further a field. Not sure where the weather would be good in that time of year.

Any suggestions from someone in a similar-ish situation?

Cheers

  • Cairns, Sunshine Coast, anywhere on the QLD coast in general were always a winner with my family at that time of year.

    • Agreed. Cairns is great for families. Heaps to see and do and plenty of epic beaches up the coast a bit.

      • Assumed qld was pretty wet around that time of year?

        • Apr is the end of wet season. You'd be pretty unlucky to get rained on every day.

      • Best to stay in a holiday park with that age, or apartment, Airbnb etc? The furtheat north I have been is Noosa…

        • We usually got a serviced 2 bedroom apartment or similar with a pool close at hand.

Both our kids were/are enthusiastic (and strong) swimmers that would spend all day in a pool if we let them and I like to be able to keep half an eye on them. As yet another example of my poor parenting skills we would let the 3yo in the pool with floaties while I watched from a distance.

Resort style places worked best for us but they did cost a bit. Normally I'm a tightwad but for holidays I go "It's only a fortnight. Who cares" and spend what I have to.

In order of enjoyment (for both adults and children):
Daydream Island (super safe and kids club, etc)
          Cairns
          Palm Cove
          Noosaville (on the river)
          Noosa Heads
          Airlie Beach
I think we did Townsville as well but i can't remember it so it must have been un-impressive.

I worked for an airline - we travelled a lot.

  • school holidays start 10th april in NSW, which is also good Friday better get in early what ever it is your planning to do

    • Thats why we are planning to go from the 29th March - to avoid some of that school holiday rush! (hopefully)

      • You will just be competing with every other Victorian family who will start holidays on March 28.

  • There's a big4 in qld close to the theme parks, might be a good option?

    • Wasn't sure if they would get the most out of the theme parks at their ages….? The youngest will still need a midday nap around that age, and 5 year olds aren't known to be great walkers…..from experience.

      • Yeah true, and someone's constantly left watching the baby

        Beachside somewhere :)
