[NSW] AmEx Statement Credit: 30%/40% off Transport for NSW, up to $15/$20 Credit

2120

It's back, and with buses included this time, plus you get all the benefits! That's right, 30% off off-peak train trips! Assuming it works properly, that is (I've been charged full price when it was supposed to be half price once) …

Edit: You may even be lucky enough to receive the 40% off offer, which increases your credit limit to $20!

Most likely targeted as unlike the last Transport for NSW offer, my DJs Amex cards are eligible, but not my Velocity Escape cards, which were eligible last time.

Save offer to eligible Card and pay your fare by tapping your Card or Device on public transport on the the Opal network, when you travel by 15/11/2019 to receive 30% credit each time. Limited to 12,000 Cards and $15 per Card. Exclusions apply

  • You can use your Card, or a mobile wallet enabled device (“Device”), to make contactless payments on public transport on the Opal network. Contactless payments cannot be made on transport that accepts OpalPay.
  • To use your Device for payment, prior to travelling you must load the Card to which the offer is saved to one of the following mobile wallets: Apple Pay, Google Pay, Samsung Pay
  • You must tap your Card or Device on an Opal reader at the beginning and end of each trip, and both taps must be made using the same Card or Device. If using a Device, you must use a Device which has been loaded with the Card to which the offer is saved. Failure to tap your Card or Device on an Opal reader at the end of a trip will incur a default fare, except when travelling on Sydney Ferries route F1.
  • If your Card or Device is not accepted for payment by the Opal reader you must tap on using another payment method (including, but not limited to, an Opal card or an Opal single trip ticket) in order to travel. Any such trips will not be eligible for the offer.
  • You will receive the same benefits of an Adult Opal card and pay an Adult fare when you tap on and tap off consistently with the same Card or Device. If using a Device, you must use the same Card on the same Device.
  • Offer is limited to a maximum of $15 credit per Card to which the offer is saved and only spend on this Card counts towards the Offer.
  • Excludes transactions where you do not spend directly with your Card to which the offer is saved by tapping your Card or Device on an Opal reader on public transport on the Opal network.
  • Excludes transactions made through a third party establishment or payment processor.
  • Credit is not redeemable for cash or other payment form.
  • Credit should appear on your billing statement within 5 business days from qualifying spend but may take up to 90 days from the offer end date.
  • Credit will not be applied to your Card Account if your Card has been suspended or cancelled.
  • Credit may be reversed if your qualifying purchase is refunded or cancelled.

      no credit yet

When will the 30%/40% AMEX credit appear?

  • anyone confirm with me whether it works on sydney's Airport Link? which means I use Amex to airport and it normally cost $18.xx and will it be cashed back by 40%?

    • Only if you saved the offer and you got offered 40% …

  • +2

Still no credit here, which is very unusual for amex

    • Yeah. Hopefully tomorrow!

      • +1

I wonder will it be credited as $20 rather than many small credits

        • Dunno. I reached the cap on one card today, so will use the other card next week.

    • Nope. Still creditless. About to reach the credit cap on one card …

      • +2

No credit back yet. Even worst, it didn't give me half fare when it's on 9th tap, only the 10th and 11th.

I would be extra vigilant to check statement/transaction when using Credit Card/Debit Card instead of using Opal card. When it got wrong, it's very difficult to get your money refunded. Opal card is quite easy to deal with when something got wrong.

        • Yeah I log each trip I make. I also got charged full price instead of half price once because the Opal reader failed to read my mobile twice. It's why I'll continue to use my Opal card bar these Amex offers.

        • No credit for me either. However my 9th and 10th tap for me gave me a bigger discount than I was expecting (55% instead of 50%). I'm not sure what's going on.

        • Not anymore- they don’t issue refunds/fix up accounts on the phone anymore. You have to fill out a form and 2 weeks later it is fixed.
I asked about why and they said it is them going ‘digital’

          • @Kah: Log the refund request (normally Default Fare) on Opal.com.au, they will fix you.

            • @jayzee: 2 weeks on and they haven’t… rang again today and someone is getting back to me

  • Wow useless from american express and transport nsw.

    What a surprise!

  • it does say it can take upto 90 days for the credit.
not sure why everyone is whinging

    • +1

'Cause normally it appears within a week. This is the first time they've taken a while (still not credited)

      • Yeah it does normally but guess not this time.. Oh well.. It'll appear

        • Are people getting those emails to say you have used your Amex offer - I have activated the offer but I don’t get any emails ( like in the past) when you use the offer

          • @Maxdax: Yes … Until I reached the cap.

          • @Maxdax: You're not the only one. I stopped getting those emails too.
I get so anxious these days because I keep thinking about whether I've tapped on or not. Getting refund back on incorrect charges is a pain (different to Opal)

          • @Maxdax: Got the emails but no credit back yet

            • @Jared17: I reached to Amex via chat and the girl said she will have to manually apply ( for all transx over 5 days over only) I’m a bit over this offer as there was a system issue at the last lg of my journey and wasn’t able to tap off ( this Monday - 27th Nov) and they billed me $29 for a trip which is normally $15. I now have to chase OPAL to get my money back. This is more hassle than it’s worth IMO

      • The other one is chemist warehouse, it take full 90 days to credit everyone

        • They specifically mentioned that though, so we couldn't really complain too much there

  • I was charged a default fare yesterday despite tapping off.

    • same here on Monday!

      • I was charged an extra $5.25 and according to the app I tapped on and off.

  • I started using one card Monday. Tapping on and tapping off. No email.

Only today I tap on and got the email instantly about the offering being used.

Man this offer is Setup so badly in the back end.

  • I had two cards, first card used for about 10 days and received email straight away, still no credit.
2nd card used once email straight away and credit came through the next day.

    • Exactly same thing. First card - no email and no credit. Second card credit next day

  • After two weeks of using my amex, I have a credit for $2.21 for TRANSPORT FOR NSW TAP. it corresponds to the travel I took on that same day (31 Oct) so the amount is fair enough, but I have no idea why every other day’s travel hasn’t been treated the same, despite receiving the same confirmatory emails. Hopefully they have it sorted out now and can rectify the past credits as well.

    • Still nothing on my end. Waiting for credits from October 16 onwards …

    • My cards have a similar issue.

I used my own card to travel from the 21st to the 27th October. Then from the 28th October to 1st November, I used a supplementary card.

This morning, I received a credit for the travel on 30th & 31st October on the supplementary card, but have received no credit for any other trips, either on my own card or the supplementary card.

  • Just an update - seems supp card is getting credits back but main card hasn't yet. Since they say up to 90 days I'll just wait a while before I do anything.

    • Same here. Supplementary card, which was used one week later has received the credits but not the main card

    • +2

seems supp card is getting credits back but main card hasn't yet

Was the supplementary card used later than the main card ?

If it was, then it could be the same timing issue as other people. It seems like something has gone wrong in Amex's systems, and only more recent trips are getting the credit.

I'll get in touch with them tomorrow & see what they say.

      • Yeah sup was used after the main. That might be why

  • Got credit back for travel 4 days ago. But not for last week. Both on my main card. Strange.

  • Still nothing from my end. I'm about to start using my supplementary Amex that's registered for the offer …

  • +1

    What a Fiasco!

On my supplementary card, it didn't register tap on on time, so it charged the default fare on one trip, then left another tap on transaction pending (which may come to Opal system later than the tap off), wouldn't surprise it would charge another default fare again!

    It's a complete disaster promotion.

There is no rebate for my first week travel yet, only two days rebate for sup-card.

I wouldn't use CC card for travel if not for promotion.

Another issue, my 10th trip of the week charged full price last Friday. Now i have to chase Opal the get the half of it back!

So check your statements carefully ppl.

Edit: looks like i have to fill a paper form sign, buy a stamp, mail it to them and wait 20 business days for a refund! Good way to rip people off NSW transport!

  • The offer wasn't setup correctly but now it has been Setup correctly

    • Does that mean those who tapped on prior to the offer being set up correctly won't get their credits or?

      • +1

        Most likely.

I'm gonna ask chat after 5 days see what they say.

Usually they are good though and back check it. But must be done manually by a human.

        • Ugh. I'm still chasing up 5000 Velocity bonus points from opening a supplementary card and spending $500 in July …

          • +1

@kerfuffle: Just spoke to them about one of my cards where I did 2 transactions.

"You have made the charges of $19.20 under this offer. I will issue the credit of $7.68"

            :)

            Yay.

            • @Turd: Got my 5000 points and the Live Chat agent said they'd credit me $15 in 3-5 business days

  • I've got the credits for 3 out of my 7 transactions. But for the last 3, first 4 was missing. I chatted online help and they're manually applying the credit and I'll see it in 3-5 business days.

  • +2

Looks like any transactions completed prior to 30th Oct was not setup correctly.

All taps completed after 30th Oct registered fine.

    • +1

Ergh… yeah, only my later ones are showing up………..

    • Can confirm; taps from October 16 to end of October on my primary card still isn't credited, but my taps on my supplementary card this week are.

Looks like it's a Live Chat session later this morning …

  • +1

I called up Amex about my missing statement credits on the trips between 21 and 29 October.

The call centre person said that she will put in a request to add back the missing credits and I'll receive them within 5 to 7 days.

It doesn't seem like they have any automatic process to fix this issue, so if you're also missing credits for certain days then it might be better to call Amex.

    • +2

Yep, you can do it via the Online Chat as well.

it's a manual human credit back

  • no credit yet

  • Has anybody tried topping up Opal cards using AMEX at a Transport Customer Service Centre, eg the one at Circular Quay station?

    • Try it out and let us know. Most likely you won't get the credit.

      • agreed, I doubt that you'll get but keen to know if it works

  • +3

so frustrating, i went back looking up my previous trips and noticed my charges are way higher than my normal trips. Gonna go back to Opal for sure, not sure if this exercise was worth it :(

    • Agree, this has proven to me to keep Opal, at least opal tells me when tap off is successful rather than a generic message.

      • +1

Worst thing is that it's overcharged your $2-3 dollars due to the tap not register properly/delay, you really don't want to spend that much time and energy, to fill in a form and stick a $1 stamp to send the request form back. You may just let it go…

        • I just got charged the maximum fare of $4.80 last night for a 2-stop bus trip last night eugh

  • +2

I got all my credits back from cards after making a online chat with the, about the non credits

    • I did that on Monday too, nothing so far. When did you have the chat with them?

      • like 3 days ago

  • +1

These seem to be tracking now.
Reached out to Amex to get everything before this week reimbursed.

  • Got my full $15 credit after speaking to LiveChat last week
