Am I Wrong? Catch.com.au Gift Cards

Good afternoon fellow OzBargainers,

I've been in a predicament for a week now and I need to know if I'm simply in the wrong or if I should continue the uphill battle against Catch.com.au

To put it simply, my wife and I wanted to purchase a Dyson V10 from Catch.com.au, $698 or so.

It was of benefit to me at the time to make some or all of the purchase using Gift Cards (the reason why isn't relevant).

I went into my local Coles and purchased 10 x $50 gift cards to put towards the vacuum, had a look at the Ts & Cs on the back of the cards - standard conditions which is fine.

It wasn't until I went to actually purchase the Dyson that I was given an error on the website saying I can only use a maximum of 5 gift cards per transaction, rendering the $250 of remaining gift cards useless to me.

After a week of back and forth phone calls to Catch, they are unable to bypass the system and have left me with no solution on how to spend these gift cards, other than to sell them on the street or 'buy something else'. I've also quickly learnt that their customer service is horrific, to say the least.

I wouldn't have bothered with the fight if I was in the wrong, but I believe I was misled with a 'bait and switch' tactic by Catch. They have taken my money but won't let me spend it as I chose.

Am I in the wrong?

  • They are clearly not fit for the purpose that they were sold to you for. Return them to the store for refund.

  • Add another option to the poll and you have my vote: “You are wrong but I Sympathise with you”.

Legally you are wrong, ethically it shdn’t be that way from a seller to accept just 5 cards. It’s their gift card and shd be treated as cash no matter what.

I know everyone's calling you out but I just wanted to say I'm impressed by your resilience OP, most people would delete their account but you're hanging in there replying to everyone despite the downvotes and negativity.

Anyway everyone's already said what I want to say; they'll last three years, there's good offers every now and then and Christmas is right around the corner so you can simplify your gift giving this year.

    • Haha thanks.
To be honest I am a bit surprised about some of the negativity, some people were acting like I personally offended them or kicked their puppy or something. I thought this community was a bit different but every forum has their unemployed trolls with nothing better to do!

Thanks for the support, you're spot on at least it will simplify my gift giving this year haha

      • ah no..

this community is the place not to post your SOB story if you want sympathy..

        • Oh really? Where can I post my sob story then

          • @MiguelSanchez91: Preferably somewhere with some other mature adults, not people with cartoons as their profile picture

            • @MiguelSanchez91: if you are referring to me then not sure what you are on about
              since I didn't neg you

just telling the truth of this community..

Read all the posts of yours or others posts of people whining on here trying to gain some sympathy
and you see this is true..

But I can see with an attitude like yours
why you feel the need to sook to this forum

By posting here what you do think people on here can do about your situation
that is between catch and you and their terms of conditions?

Asking "Am I wrong" shows people here you lack any insight into your own situation..

            @MiguelSanchez91: Try "A Current Affairs"

      • Buddy, I’m with you, there are lots of trolls in the forum. And I encountered the same problem as yours. I was thinking to raise this to the ACCC ( ps me if you wanna make a formal complaint). Anyway, I’m done with The Catch, ( very sneaky business) and only stick with the Amazon

  • they have the 256GB galaxy tab s6 for 1088, now you need more gift cards.

    • Ohhhh! Thanks for the heads up, I'm off to Coles

  • solution solved……….. 5 xmas prezzies

  • Yeah same thing happened to us when we ordered catch cards with credit card points.

Sellers were dicks about it too and we had to pay double postage (2 couches) on items which would have otherwise had combined postage. Wouldn't recommend catch unless you're getting free vouchers with points tbh.

  • …not sure if it's been mentioned yet, or even possible…but can you buy 2 X $250 e-gift cards(separate transactions) from catch using the 10 vouchers, then purchase the item with the 2 e-gift cards?

    • I would call the Catch before make any move !

  • HAHA

      HAHAH
      This thread in a nutshell.

  • Hmmn… It does give you the option to pay for the e-gift cards with gift cards…

    • Yeah I thought that too, but when I went to actually apply a gift card the value applied was $0, then came with an error saying that you can't use gift cards to buy gift cards.

We (professionals) use gift cards in a way that they are not intend to be used.

The idea of a gift card is to give gift someone who you can't be bothered (unable to decide) buying something for.

  • Regardless of the poll, I think the number of cards that can be redeemed in one transaction would be a worthy addition to the print in the card. Unless they change this figure regularly just to piss their customers off?

    • Well, I believe they get away from this although many people got caught. To me that is pretty dodge , the 5 max gift cards only come up when you paid. If they declare that on the fine print or even showed in the back of card . Anyway I done with this business.

  • A silly mistake, but totally one I could see myself making. I guess the glass half full perspective is that you still saved some money with the 5 gift cards you could use. And as others have said, you've still got some gift cards in your back pocket for any good deals that pop up over the next 3 years.

  • For thinking that we could be something for real

    • Woooaahhh
Might wanna slow down on them "brownies" dude!

  • For all the slack you have copped in here, if it paid off you woulda been laughing. At least no one else will attempt to do this now lol.

  • Unfortunately for you - you have been CAUGHT……hope you find a use of them prior to expiry….

  • The 5 card limit is only for the webstore right? There's brick and mortar catch stores… there was one in Melbourne not to long ago , a pop up. Would be worth seeing if your vac was in one of the stores.
