LG G7 ThinQ (Platinum Grey) $399 @ JB Hi-Fi

1980

Seems like decent price for this phone. Same price as the V30 but the G7 has better specs. The G7 has the newer SD845 compared to the SD835 in the V30, Even though the SD845 is last gen now it should be enough for most people.
This phone should top most mid-range phones for the same price.

I am after a new phone my self but the DXOmark score for the cameras seems average. This or the Mi Mix 3 5G for $80 more? Minus the warranty?

I'm still on G3, not happy with it, although this looks like a decent price but not sure about G model, G3 is extremely laggy from day 1, it randeomly reboots, overheat all the time even when ambient temp is low

    • G7 will be a huge step up with a modest price.

  • Can someone confirm that this is a Dual Sim Model.

Confirmed Dual SIM LG G7 ThinQ LMG710EMW (Model number is at the Button of the page at JB-Hi-Fi

    Key Features
    6.1" QHD+ Super Bright Display
Super Bright Camera with AI CAM
    Boombox Speaker
    Super Far Field Voice Recognition
    DTS:X 3D Surround Sound
    Dual SIM

    • I bought mine from JB so if it's the same then it IS DualSIM

    The good:
    * Has band 28
    * NFC
    * Australian warranty / ACL / 2 years from retailer or manufacturer
    * Local retailer with a physical presence
    * should be TRS eligible
    * eligible for price protection (if you have 28 degrees or Coles card with that, although this is a "clearance" item, so might not be any retailers to match it against later).
    * Looks like it has a physical headphone jack

    Unknown:
    * dual sim? Nobody seems to know?

    The bad:
    * The bootloader CANNOT be unlocked: See https://developer.lge.com/resource/mobile/RetrieveBootloader… (only the European models can be unlocked). So you must assume you will never get custom ROM support, and will have to rely on LG for ROM updates (which they have sucked for previously, e.g. LG G4 they stopped updating after just 1 year 2 months from release). Although it has become standard for a lot of manufacturers, this severely limits the device's lifespan (out of date Android version much sooner / much harder to keep secure)
    * SD card is shared with SIM 2 (if it's the dual SIM model). Much better to have SD card with a dedicated separate slot and not have to choose between SIM 2 or sdcard, or muck about with glue or adapters.
    * Battery capacity?
    * Camera?

    • My wifes LG G4 runs everything we need without updates.

      • It's great that it works for your wife, but she is is missing out on 4 things without LG G4 updates:

        1) weakened security. There have been a number of Android vulnerabilities found since August 2016 (date of the last LG G4 update). What makes them harder to exploit is that usually you would need a hostile app installed to exploit them. So the Google Play store provides an additional layer of protection & review that helps to keep hostile apps off devices (but it's not prefect, as show by the CamScanner ad-fraud, with an app that started off okay but later became bad, due to fraudulent ad clicking running in the background draining the battery). Of course you're still vulnerable to Stagefright style vulnerabilities (e.g. receiving a malicious MMS message). You have no protection against this type of problem, should something similar occur.

        2) app compatibility. There are apps now that are no longer working on the device, presumably due to its old OS and/or unfixed bugs in that OS. An example on the LG G4 is the United Airlines app, which refused to play videos on board (this was a flight with only on board WiFi and no screens on seat backs, so it was the only entertainment option). We have an old iPad that has a similar issue - it no longer runs the latest iOS, so there are apps that cannot be installed on it now.

        3) No fixes for bugs or annoyances. E.g. the bluetooth on the LG G4 is very fickle, this is due to a bug in Android 6.0 that was fixed in 6.0.1, but the LG G4 vendor updates ceased at 6.0, so the device's bluetooth remains unreliable at connecting.

        4) No new features - each version of Android brings improvements, some useful, some not, but you miss out on all of them.

So it's not ideal to not get OS updates.

Dual SIMs because the box shows two IMEIs.
      LM-G710EMW is the model number.

Specs also indicate it is a dual SIM version.

  • Love my G7 ThinQ. Used it as the primary photo and video camera on my 800km Camino hike. Photos were stunning. For this price brilliant. It's a no brainer. Tempted to get one for the wife although her G4 still does a decent job for it's age. I had a Nokia Andriod One phone in between, lasted about a month with it. Awful and would not run many apps I needed like Square POS and my insta360 app. Went back to LG and love the G7.

      Eh? Why wouldn't they run?

  • Ordered online for store pick up. (I know order can be canceled)

What is the return policy for Delivery, Store purchase or after opening the Box.

I never returned anything at JB Hi fi

    • You can swap or return within a month as long as the item is still sealed. Once the sealed is broken then you can't return it.

    V40 ($530) vs G7 ($399)
I prefer V40 than this even though $130 higher.

    • +2

The V40 has a good mix of camera's. Plus the battery is slightly bigger.

Maybe jb will drop the price on the V40 seeing as this is being cleared.

    • Tell us why? OLED screen, bigger form factor, better camera, more RAM, is the processor the same (not sure). Battery life should be comparable given the screen size difference. Same best in class audio. Personally the V20 is a bit big for my tastes so the smaller size is a big plus for the G7.

      • V40 - 2 extra lenses: extra telephoto lens, extra front wide angle lens; extra screen size, more RAM and probably more storage. I am not sure which deal is the V40 ($530).

OLED screen - better contrast ratio and better blacks. It does have the blue colour shift issue. While I am not a fan of colour shift, at least it is not like VA where every colour shifts. The HDR experience is nicer on OLED. Not sure whether V40 improves it, but on V30, I am a bit scared about the screen burn-in. Use the always on option once and the clock screen remained for a few seconds (it did went away) and since then, I've turned off that feature.

        $130 difference… V40 is tempting…

  • Looked at some reviews and it should be a steal at $399! Has anyone purchased any of these JB clearance mobiles and got their order delivered within the timeframe? I purchase 2 devices last week and have not heard from JB (expected delivery is today). Wanted to grab this one but not sure if it will be delivered before my trip for TRS refund ….

  • I picked up a P20 for $400 ($365 after staff and newsletter discount) this am from Target.

Which is a better deal? Huawei or this?

  • The Black colour variant of the G7 is still available for same price for both delivery (extra $4.99) and some pick-up locations (I've only checked for Sydney), https://www.jbhifi.com.au/products/lg-g7-thinq-black

  • Can someone please explain why the 2018 Flagship LG G7 ThinkQ with the newer SDM 845 is LESS popular when compared to the the older SDM 835 LG V30+ 128GB $399 was such a popular deal few months ago.

My guess is because the v30 has better battery life, more storage, is lighter, thinner, android enterprise approved, Daydream VR, has AMOLED, and the clincher: unlockable bootloader.

    • +1

The main reason is the LG G7 doesn't have any special standout feature, other than Snapdragon 845 at this price point. You can also see a bit of cost cutting measures in G7, well it is the more affordable range of LG smartphone.

V30+ has OLED screen, 128GB storage space and better battery life. This G7 has 64GB storage, slightly smaller battery and IPS screen. While V30+ has an OLED screen, it does struggle to playback 1080p HDR youTube videos (due to SD835 lacks the ability to decode the HDR codec quick enough). G7, while does benefit from Snapdragon 845, does not have stellar camera lenses compared to other Snapdragon 845 phones.

Another reason is more cheaper Snapdragon 855 based phones being released (so spend a bit more to get SD855 perhaps).

      • I would love to spend a little more and get SDM 855. What would you recommend / consider?

I bought a LG G7 but it can be returned within 30 day as long as it not opened

        • +2

Cheap SD 855 would be a Xiaomi Mi9 or Mi Mix 3 5G. Unfortunately, Xiaomi opted for MIUI instead of Android One and the latest firmware still has some annoying bugs. Not worth the hassle as you will need to waste time to find workarounds. The display is 1080p. Also, warranty is going to be a nightmare (grey import). Unclear how reliable Tobydeals is.

LG G7, from my brief test, the performance is pretty good. Faster than S9 (Exynos) and V30+. 1440p HDR youTube playback - zero issue (compared to V30+ with very laggy 1080p HDR youTube playback). I need to borrow a S10e to compare it against SD855. The IPS screen - no colour shift and no pentile resolution cheating (compared to OLED). It has a cooler white colour temperature, which I prefer. However, OLED's better contrast ratio means in HDR, you still see a wider range of colours, especially blacks.

The two issues with G7 are (1) 64GB storage - while microSD support is there, but you will need an ugly adapter cable if you still want dual SIMs and the second SIM will be exposed and (2) the reduced width on the display makes texts smaller (compared to say V30+). So older people (i.e. parents) might still prefer V30+'s wider screen as texts are a bit larger.

    • Battery, better built and generally speaking has better XDA support

LG is known to forgo updates very quickly

  • +1

is this an upgrade from samsung galaxy s6? my battery has gone to shit and android updates made it slow

    • yes, significant upgrade. Bigger screen, better battery, audio..

  • Can anyone recommend a case/cover for this mobile (LG G7 ThinQ)

  • LG G7 or Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 5G 6GB/64GB INTERNATIONAL VERSION for $469?

    • If you don't mind MIUI, the camera slider, USB 2.0, tedious process for warranty, then Mi Mix 3 5G.

Both are compromised in ways. Kinda prefer a SD 855 phone with WiFi 6 and USB 2.0 for a SD 855 isn't pleasant. G7 - cameras.. not so great, screen kinda on the smaller side (though 1440p but IPS), does support USB 3.

Seems like you really want a SD 855 phone. If you play a lot of mobile PUBG or Fornite, then definitely go 855.

  • G7 isn't exactly that great

For SD845 you would get oneplus 6 instead only a little bit more or a Xiaomi with SD 845 still better than this except audio

Have one, don't update to Android 9 the pinned tabs don't work reliably.

  • Rang JB and got them to put a G7 on hold. Got there a few hours later and they had mistakenly sold it. No others in Perth Metro.
Offered to sell me a comparable phone for the same price. After the tried selling me an oppo, they then offered Pixel 3aXL and said it was comparable. Store was closing to I bought on their recommendation. Have just looked up specs and it is no where near the G7. Nearest would be the Pixel 3XL !!!
Going to take it back tomorrow. Any suggestions on something similar to G7 I could ask for.

    • Ask for an LG v40, or even v30+

    • +1

Suggest you don't buy any alternative from JB right now. Just return it and get the money back.
      V40 is better, but $699 - forget it. V30+ is $799 (it's slower than G7).

You can get V40 for $530 somewhere according to jtlim21c. If JB is willing to sell you a V40 for that price, then get it.

    • Hi imp, I have an unopen g7 I bought yesterday from jbhifi i am happy to swap you for the pixel 3a. I like the pixel's nore frequent software updates!

      • Sorry. I needed the receipt etc to get the tax back (duty free)

    • Joondalup store says there's stock still? Also delivery available.

    • Dude Pixel 3a xl is way better that G7 if you can get it for $399

  • Can you root Australia version G7? Previous G6 was unroot able.

    • Once you entered the developer mode, there is an option to disable OEM unlock. I am guessing that allows you to unlock the bootloader on G7. Never tried… and unclear why some people claimed G7 has an unlockable bootloader.

  • This or wait for black friday?

  • +2

I wait wait for $399 deal on the V40 for back Friday or Christmas

  • FYI - no longer available for delivery and pretty much sold out almost everywhere.

Bathurst is closest stock for C+C from Sydney postcode..

OP's link to grey is dead, only Black available now..
