  • Hold, Hold, we must hold for the 3950X

  • Wow.

    • -3

I'm such an AMD fanboy I refuse to play games. That way my CPU is always superior!

      • +5

        Lol fair enough?

    • -4

      Show working.

      • +1

A constant 24/7 running price wouldn't be really be a "special" then would it?

    • +2

Gonna get negged but I agree. I'd also argue that if you're a gamer you should settle for the 3700x/9700k instead of the 3900x/9900k unless you really need that CPU power. For gamers it might be better to spend that money on a more powerful GPU.

  • +1

i got boned by the dodgy dudes 20% frenzy sale last week, $630 would have been a great price if the honored it, they rang me on the monday saying we don't actually have any in stock

    • +1

What did u buy and which shop was it?

      • +1

game dude computers had a 20% frenzy last week so i purchased a 3900x and a GB aorus master, about an hour after i bought it all the cpu's were out of stock, thought i got a great deal.

all i can say is i hope they go bankrupt

        • How much was it after the 20%?

          • @Viospeed: $631.20

            • +1

@fr05ty: Yeah that sounds like a pricing error. They used the no stock excuse to get out of it

              • +1

@Viospeed: same went for the motherboard, then he asked if there was anything else i wanted/was interested in

                • @fr05ty: Was it an ebay sale? I hope you gave them negative feedback

              • +8

@Viospeed: That makes it $789 before discount, which is what most shops are selling it for. We're so used to price jacking that a legitimate 20% off is considered a pricing error heh.

        • I remember that, glad i didn't order then.

    • Same with my order.

  • +2

im starting to get into re-encoding my media library to h265.

this with 12 cores would be ideal right, or does the higher IPC of the intels make them better?

eitherway, do you think if i got this with a b450 board and ram for 1k it would be good. would i really need a x570 board? i would have no intention of overclocking it lol, it would be insanely sufficient as is. i would get a quality b450 board tho, like the tomahawk max

or what would you suggest to try and keep it at the 1k~ price point.

    • why re-encode to h265?

      • Extra losses?

      • Assuming it might be to save on disk space

    • +2

Intel's IPC is worse. And IPC isn't something you as a consumer should really care about

For encoding/decoding this is much faster than Intel. The 9900k is better at gaming, and a few other specific tasks that take advantage of Intel specific features. But not really much else

  • Can a MSI b450m gaming plus motherboard handle this CPU? Not planning to overclock

    • +1
      • +6

        it doesnt work that way.

Gaming plus has 4 phase vrm, the same as tomahawk, but the vrm heatsink is much smaller.

You would need a fan to blow cold air to the heatsink otherwise your motherboard vrm will overheat and life span is shorten.

        • +1

That excel sheet is really useful, I've used it so much.

According to it, the B450M Gaming Plus is adequate enough to handle the 3900X at stock and thus even the 3950X since the 3950x is much more power efficient.

        • thanks for linking

        • Awesome thanks mate this is great to know.

        • Should be able to handle stock just fine.

    • It should handle it just fine, b450 MSI boards are very, very good.

  • thats pretty good as its normally $949 on their website

  • +1

    Waiting for 3950X or TR3

  • This or the 2920 Threadripper?

    • +6

      Correct

    • do you need the pcie lanes? or the better clock ipc, x399 is not up-gradable to the 3000 chips
CA have the 2920x for $511.20 at the moment

      https://youtu.be/DYVulrV2ZGU bitwit 3900x v 2920x

      • Thanks :) yea i was looking at that with 399 motherboard came out cheaper then the 3900x

      • Looks like the 3900x is better

  • +6

For the people looking for info on if a ryzen mobo would be ok for this/3000 series CPU this person/post has one of the better guides for VRM temp for the ryzen mobo's.

    https://www.reddit.com/r/Amd/comments/c7qj5e/am4_vcore_vrm_r…

Of course there are other features that you need to consider that mobo's have/don't have but it's a good first stop, especially for upgrading your cpu to 3000 series but want to keep the mobo.

  • Wow cheaper than MSY's previous $728 deal.

  • Would it likely get lower during any black Friday sales?

    • Hard to say as this price is the lowest its ever been

  • is it overkill for gaming?

What's the optimum core count for gaming before diminishing returns kicks in?

    • +1

    • +2

Yes it's way overkill for gaming.
      I'd say 6 imho.

    • +3

      3700x would suit

      • is the provided cooler good enough for overclocking, or need aftermarket? is it noisy or quiet?

        • Good enough. These chips don't overclock well anyway. Just let PBO do the job.

    • 6 cores. R5 3600.

3700x has basically no performance gain in gaming over the 3600x, and again the 3600 will overclock the same as a 3600x.

3600 is the best value for money right now, by far. Only reason to get a 3600x is if you would otherwise have bought Borderlands 3 or Outer World (free with the 3600x) - and absolutely no reason to step up to the 3700x for gaming.

      • What about future games? Will the 3600 be sufficient for 2-3 more years?

        • I don't think the processor will all of the sudden become obsolete in 2-3 years.

Right now the 3700x and 3600x have the same performance in gaming, in the future, the 3700x might start to see an advantage as the next-gen consoles will have 8 core Ryzen CPUs. So there is an argument to be made for "future proofing"

However, if in 2-3 years 6 cores isn't enough, you can simply upgrade the CPU. The 3700x will be much cheaper, and the Ryzen 4000 chips will be on AM4 too. Look at the price of a 2700x now - significantly cheaper brand new. For gaming, paying the extra ~$200 for the 2 extra cores now just isn't worth it imo.

    • Only thing you'd really wanna do is tighten up the memory settings to get the most out of the AMD CPU, very little need for any OC on the CPU.

      • how quiet is the stock fan?

        • Never used it. Was going liquid but 2 orders were messed up so ending up using a Cooler Master MasterLiquid ML360R RGB for my CPU - possibly my only regret as it's loud compared to my H80iv2 and a bugger to install.

  • Still waiting for 3700x decent sale.

  • +1

    Thanks OP, Perfect Timing.

  • i wouldnt go this way for a 3900x when there is a marginal difference in Core CPU power on a 3700x i.e it does the same job at a lower price. would use the difference on a better GPU

  • I've been looking at getting one of these for ages. thanks OP

  • people really think this wont be much cheaper next friday?

    might buy it now then

  • This is a good find! I watched the 3900X for months, finally got one last week for $760 with free delivery from Umart. Having just completed my system build over the weekend I can say it beats every expectation I had, it's beautiful. Am glad I made the change away from Intel now.

    • what are you using it for mainly?

      • Gaming 1st, video editing and streaming, then CAD/Solid Works. Wanted a system which was VR ready for Cyberpunk 2077 initially, after much research and a good deal of anxiety I decided to switch from Intel to AMD - in hindsight it was the best move ever. Was going with the 3700X for $495 from Shopping Express but eventually decided on the 3900X as I tend to do a fair amount of desktop work and the extra $250 to get the better chip means I can do away with another of my aging systems.
All that said, the 3700X still would've done exceedingly well. I've since discovered the priority should be:
        1. A good X570 mobo as companies like ASUS intend on removing Gen 3 compatibility in future BIOS updates for any X470 mobo's. Also, some of the X570 mobo's are just garbage (i.e. ASUS X570-F)
        2. Memory designed to compliment AMD chips (e.g. G.Skill NEO)
        3. CPU. 3700X would've done everything I needed but since I'd saved money on a few other areas, and sacrificed a 2nd M.2 drive, I got the 3900X. I can always get another M.2 or more memory later.
