In The Market for a Decent 2080 Super - January seems to Be a Bad Month for GPU prices?

I've been looking around for some 2080 supers to buy at the moment, not sure whether to kick myself or feel pleased about holding off on the FTC deal for the MSI gaming trio X

I was comparing a few cards that sold during the month of december and the current prices now, and the best price/performance in the 2080 super range I could realistically find were these Gigabyte 2080 super Gaming OCs from Umart.

A couple of cards EVGA cards that scorptec were selling also went up in price surprisingly, but I don't seem to see any increase in demand for these cards.

If any of you know of a deal that might be coming up or going on currently, let me know!

I might even consider getting a 1660 and waiting for the 3000 range if prices are going to stagnate for the next few months.

The 2080S is a bit of a weird pricepoint to be honest. At its current price, it makes no sense compared to a 5700XT/2070S, it's just not significantly faster enough to warrant the extra cost. On the other side of the coin, you might as well get a 2080 Ti if you're already spending the money to get the 2080S.

Advice would just be to go for a 2070S or 5700XT and call it a day. Wouldn't get a 1660S and wait for 3000 series. Who knows when the 3000 series will come.

Since you're looking at a 2080S, I assume you want a high end card - prices at the high end are pretty bad right now as AMD has nothing to compete with Nvidia there.

I agree that 2070S/5700XT is a better value than the 2080S. 2080Ti is stupid expensive, not worth the money IMO.
Another good option might be to pick up a used 1070/1070Ti/1080/1080Ti, these are great value right now. 1070 can be had for ~$250 if you get a good deal.
Later this year should be good for high end GPUs, with Nvidia releasing 3000 series (likely to be announced March) and AMD releasing a high end card with performance supposedly around 2080Ti levels. Prices at the high end should come down when both of these become available - if you're still after a high end card then, you can pick one up with better than current pricing, and resell e.g. a 1070 without losing more than $50-100 off the used price now.

Have fun with the upgrade mate :)

  • I think the cheapest way, assuming you already have a video card, is to buy a Techfast 2080S system, swap the GPU and sell the Techfast system.

    • honestly i think the most cost effective way to do things given what we know now is probably just to buy a 5700xt and hold onto that and offload it when the big announcements come out mid-year (like what p1 ama said)

I was looking to try play at 144hz to 240hz 1080p on some of the more recent AAA titles but it seems like even the 2080 super can't do that confidently.

    • I've been thinking about this but are there actually people who will buy the spare parts?

  • I'd wait for them to announce more on the 3000 series.
I wouldnt buy a new card right now
