    • easy fixed: Buy a bumper sticker depicting that plait hair girl from Volvo land..

  • $47 delivered to QLD :o… shessh

    • Are you regional? It only cost me $20 shipping to Brissie for the 6kg and 4 of their generic sodastream cylinders when I bought from them in January.

  • ABN holders can get it even cheaper (around 20%) by registering for a trade account …

    • what is the process for registering for a trade account? I can't seem to find anything on their website.

    • never mind - found it on main page - register for wholesale

    • Was your application instantly accepted or did you have to wait for them to contact you?

      • I registered with ABN but I dont see any price difference with wholesale account too?

I have a 6kg cylinder hooked up directly to my Sodastream which sits on top of my laundry fridge with the gas cylinder on the ground next to the fridge and it lasts me around 18 months.

If you’re in the Newcastle area you can get a 6kg co2 refill for $30 from Frank Pauna In Mayfield West. Found him on a home brew forum a few months back and got my cylinder refilled a few weeks ago so he’s still in business.

    • 18 months is awesome, Is it just you using the stream? Just curious to the usage rate

      • Two people in the house, probably around 5 litres of soda water per week.

Are there, by chance, 83 other OzBargain-ers in the Brisbane area interested in a group buy?

    • Hahah I was about to post this, discount!

    • Count me in. Haha

    • I'm also in!

    • Also in!

  • Can I get an oxygen tank?

    • I wouldn't hold my breath (jk)

      Yes

  • Quick question,

if i buy this 2.6Kg and also buy a Refill Adapter for sodastream , is there any gauge or anythign that shows sodastream cylinder is refilled?

Or should i leave it for 10-20secs and hope the sodastream cylinder is refilled?

    Thx

    • +1

No guague … Weigh it … 400g is what you need.

    • +2

Best just weight the cylinder before and after will tell you how much has gone in. I weight an empty one and stick a label on it (as a reminder for next time).

I even go as far as sticking a little label on the back of the Sodastream machine with empty bottle attached and weight it. This way will have a fair idea how much gas is left once filled…..if that makes sense.
It's also handy having a sodastream spare cylinder around so one can swap out and can woory about filling the empty one whenever.

Other: I have found it impossible to get the last say 400 grams out of the main 2.5KG bottle and into sodastram bottles (even if from freezer). In turn to use the remaining 400gr I connect an adaptor directly to softdrink bottles eg a 2 litre coke bottle full of cold water and carbonate it. Works well and in fact can carbonate any liquid this way or even use small soda bottles.
Parts used as per noted here as OPTION 2 here: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/387883

      • +1

It's completely normal that you still have remaining CO2 in the big canister. 400 grams left in a 2.6Kg canister are under lower pressure than 400 grams in a Sodastream cylinder. It's impossible to move all of it spontaneously from the big cylinder to the smaller one

        • +1

Yeap, and seems a wasted 15% (nearly a whole Sodastream cylinders worth) hence the reason I use Carbonation Caps etc directly on coke type bottles when main 2.6KG Cylinder runs down to this level.

          • @Borg: It's not wasted though, is it. Merely unachievable. Same for LPG tanks for vehicles.

            • @Ulysses31: But it is achievable via using the regulator/carbonator cap kit, hence no waste. It's a handy kit as also allows me to gas other things eg Juices, wine etc.

      • Did you have to get the full Option 2 kit (all parts)?

        • Yes, as the individual items make up the parts required to make the single unit kit. The tubing is the only thing that I have excess of as I only used around a meter of the 12meters.

  • I picked one up over Christmas but either mine is defective or I just have no idea what I'm doing (probably the latter). However, each time I try to refill I hear gas escaping and I'm not sure it's actually doing anything - have tightened with wrenches and the problem still happens.

Sitting idle in the pantry at the moment…

    • +1

Did you remove the small safety pressure release plug in the valve outlet?

      • Yep it's been removed.

    • +1

i find that you have to tighten it to the adapter REEAAALLLY tight, otherwise gas leaks

    • +2

I refill soda stream bottles with my tank. I had issues with the rubber gasket on the pressure relief valve being broken, and gas hissing whenever I tried to refill. Check all the gaskets/ O rings if your set up has them. Find where the gas is coming from and you should be able to get it working.

@billbro: Does your brass adaptor have the black seals inside both sides?

    • +1

      O-rings?

      • +1

That's the one………had a mind blank when writing my comment. O-Rings is the name I was looking for. Thanks.
I'd update my post but can't now :-)

        • Has a black and white ring from memory.

I actually wonder if the screw threads are a bit messed up on my cyclinder.

          • @billbro: Need some photos.
Plenty of helpful & Knowledgeable people here

    • I have 1 black (rubber) and 1 white (nylon).

  • Cool, 6KG tank is also on special for $83! No brainer! I sprung for it and the sodastream adapter! I'll be paying 50% for my refills for the first tank, and less for subsequent tank-refills. :D

      • Damn it, anything for the savings! At those prices I cannot afford NOT to buy 84 bottles…

  • thanks OP been waiting for this for a while.

Any reps on hand or someone that already has one of these?

Is it possible to change the attachment on the end of the hose to female so you can also use it to fill empty sodastream bottles? I have 3 sodastreams within the family and one fixed at my place, so just looking for the most cost effective way of refilling but also getting the direct fit adapter.

    • Literally 3 posts above yours. There's an adapter to refill bottles.

      • I'm aware of that. If I'm plumbing my 6kg bottle in on an adjacent cupboard wall, I'd like to be able to just leave it in place and remove the hose from my sodastream and attach an empty cannister when needed, rather than detach the 6kg bottle from the cupboard.

        But thanks. 👍

WARNING. A leaking setup will put CO2 into the room you live in.

At 1000 to 2000 ppm (parts per million) you will start to feel drowsy.
At 2000 to 5000 ppm Headaches, Sleepiness, Poor concencration.
Greater than 40,000 ppm Permanent brain damage, Coma, Even death.

          Take care.

i refilled mine at springvale yesterday and it was $56

  • +1

I watched someone on YouTube the other day, refill a Soda Stream bottle with Dry Ice for about $4. You chill the bottle in the freeze, put it on a scale and tare it, then unscrew the top of the bottle with a crescent wrench and fill it up with crushed dry ice to about 400g then screw it back on. Once it heats up, you have compressed C02.

    • +2

I've done it. Works well, but it's fiddly and time-consuming.

1Kg of dry ice costs about $10, but by the time you crush it you lose up to half of that due to evaporation.

      • The video I watched, he claimed that you can buy crushed dry ice. Crushing it yourself would be horrible.

Hey guys, I had no idea hacking Sodastream is "a thing", but once you calculate the cost and realising the price drops from 33 cents/litre to 6c/litre it blew my mind!!! Go OzBargain!!!

    • +1

Yeah, same here. 2.6 cylinder with adapter shipped 126 bucks. Works out to 31c per liter. Refills around 6-8c.
      Normal 60l refills around 30c.

      Thanks Op!

  • Are the sodastream refill bottles they sell easier to refill than the official ones?

  • +1

So with the trade account, can be any type of business?

  • +1

Thanks OP!! The world's flora needs all that trace gas to grow. Finally operate my sodastream to keep making that farting noise.

  • Man $83 for the 6kg version. I got fleeced mid year when I paid $149 for the 6kg bottle and the sodastream adapter.

However it has been great just topping up my own sodastream bottles which I have done at least 8 times so far, so I am ahead by that account.

    • How do you invert the 6KG bottle and reach the valve? Did you do a hack like making a stand for it?

      • +1

Nope, just hold the bottle upside down when I fill up the soda stream bottles.

      • @CX9 I would skip on inverting the 6kg bottle, and just freeze-fill-freeze-fill your soda stream bottle instead. Less chance of dropping your big bottle and causing a scene.

        • So you use this to fill up your regular soda stream bottles?

          • @frenzal: Good point. I use the adaptor below on a 6kg bottle. Slightly different use to what others are doing. I don't have the room for a big bottle in the kitchen, and I refill for others.

            https://www.kegland.com.au/sodastream-cylinder-filling-adapt…

            • @Blandford: Ok didn't know it was possible I'll look into it.

Is it hard to do? Do you use scales or measure what your putting in some other way?

What's people's preferred method refilling soda stream bottles or setting up tank?

              • +1

@frenzal: Kegland have instruction video on their website. Only difference between what I do and what they do, is I refreeze after the first fill, then fill it again x1-2 times to get the full amount in there.
(Freezing helps condense CO2 in the soda stream gas bottle so you can get more in).

All you need to start this whole québang is a shifter spanner to put the brass adapter (linked in my post above) onto the big gas bottle, and the ability to turn the soda stream bottle in both an anti clockwise or clockwise direction with hands.

I use kitchen scales to weigh because I like measurements. You can do without scales though. Just don't repeat the freeze and fill process more than twice.

I would prefer to have a gas bottle plumbed straight into the soda stream. But those bottles are fanging huge.

Also, if you have family you don't like, or friends you feel ambivalent about then you can charge them $10 a pop to refill their soda stream cannisters. Win Win Win.

                • +1

                  @Blandford: Thanks for your reply

                • +2

@Blandford: You should charge everyone $10 - $15 regardless as its still cheaper than swap outs from store so Win Win for both parties. If you did it for free, then you would be out of pocket …..not to mention the hassle/time it takes to refill OR the biggest hassle in having to get big tank refilled (pain in Sydney Innerwest…..not many places that refill).

                  • +1

                    @Borg: Good point.
Though at the moment I have bartering arrangements which work in my favour, rather than cash.

    Any deals on N2O?

  • Probably better off getting a cylinder from BOC, Coregas, Super Gas or Air Liquide (depending on where you live). A 6kg (D-size) cylinder from BOC is $79, only problem is that BOC charge rental so after a year you have to pay another $79, if you know that you will use the cylinder within 12 months it works out better for single use. Refill of these kegland cylinders is pretty cheap though. Unfortunately the other 3 don't seem to have online stores that are readily accessible but I'm sure their prices are lower than BOC. Upside of using an actual gas company will be that the valve quality will be a lot better than this throwaway container and if you have any issues they should replace the cylinder free of charge. You also don't have to worry about testing the cylinder (after 10 years or if it gets damaged) or repairing it if you knock it over and damage the valve, for example.

  • Does any of you have experience with StandPipe valve type cylinders? I am reading as if the cylinder has standpipe then it is not required to invert the donor cylinder. I would recon inverting full 6Kg cylinder which would be 20Kg is not fun. I am keen on buying on of those. Appreciate any experience on this.

    • Cylinders with siphon tubes are much less common, and kegland doesn't sell them. I say kegland doesn't sell them, because before kegland started importing their own co2 tanks, a 6kg tank would cost closer to $300, so looking elsewhere will likely be much more expensive.

In some instances it is possible to retrofit a siphon tube, but I'm not sure if it's possible with this cylinder.

Inverting the tank on the floor isnt difficult. It stands nicely on its plastic guard.

      • Thanks @ash2000 for the info. Really helpful. I rang BOC and Supagas and they have the version with dip tube. However none of them sell the cylinder. They only hire. With gas $79 with a free refill per year, So it is too much for my requirement. I guess I will go with the 6Kg then.

        • Yes, their rental rates are extortionate too. I don't recall what it was when I enquired, but I belive it was far more than the cost of the cylinder in the first year.

I guess I will go with the 6Kg then.

Keep in mind, you'll get up to 15 refills worth of the co2 included with your purchase. That's $300 worth of gas using sodastreams refill prices! It pays for itself (for most people) in the first few months.

  • I saw young people sniffing them from the ballon . Is it the one ?

    • That's helium.

      • Or somebodies lung juice :-)

      • Or Nitrous.

  • Been looking at this promo for a week or two, thinking it was perm. Didn't realise its a genuine deal.

Love me a bargain, but 6kg seems industrial for us, and this could all be honeymoon period.

I'm drinking 10x more "soft drink" than ever in my life, albeit 75% of the time it's straight soda. Same with two kids under 6.

    Decisions, decisions.

PS, these double as NOS bottles… If you're looking to make Fast & Furious Eleventeen: Part III

    • yeah its a novelty, we refilled ours a few times and then haven't ever again. Barely drink soft drink these days unless its christmas and then its so cheap around christmas anyway.

  • Sorry if I’m missing something here, but why would you fiddle round with refilling the small bottles when you can connect the big bottle directly to the machine?

    • +1

So you can fill your friends and family's bottles.

      • Hmm. Ok. Thanks

    • Not everyone wants a big bottle sitting on Kitchen Counter alongside Sodastream nor have a location to be able place it close by or within a cupboard.

      • Sure. Thanks

  • How heavy are these cylinders? Got the dimensions off the website but didn't see anything on the total weight of either the 2.6 or 6kg cylinders.

    • 6kg bottle is 19.5kg full.

  • what happens if you breathe this in

    • +3

Is this one of those riddles where we realise the answer has been hiding in your username all along?

    • +1

You already do, with every breath.

But-yes, too much and you could become a plant.

  • I currently have a 2.4Kg which I invert it when I refill the 400g cylinders without issue. I'm looking to get the 6Kg tank and was wondering if it was practical to use it to refill the 400g without some type of harness to hold the 6Kg tank, like is it too heavy?
    Thanks

    • +3

6kg comes with bracket around valve that works great as a stable stand on flat surface when inverting.

      • Good to know. Thanks

    • +1

I bought the 6kg bottle today - it is really quite heavy. I am personally wondering if I should have bought the smaller one as it would be much easier to invert. If I did it over I probably would go for the 2.6kg (which is slightly more expensive per kg) but likely easier to handle. I haven't done a refill yet so time will tell.

      • 19.5kg & bracket stand mentioned above, so it should be very do-able.

But yes, I lift & move stuff WELL over sensible my limits. But I let it (or science) do the work. Don't risk your health/body over something foolish.

I'm sure these can be laid flat on a rolled-towel near the edge of the bench etc. and slowly turn on head. Either way, wouldn't hurt to have an assistant, only once every few weeks-month

  • kegland is awsesome. best price ive ever found. what's also great is that theyve got 24/7 pickup in their lockers.

  • What Syrup is everyone using that is cheap and tastes good preferably low in sugar? Not Sodastream branded?

    • I use Bickfords Lemon Cordial at woolworths
