New Motorola Razr Flip Phone RRP $2,699

Just saw an ad today that the new Razr Motorola is retailing for $2,699:

I think its way overpriced. If it was half that cost I could see people buying it, but for $2,700 You could just about buy two iPhone XS Maxs.

Is anyone actually going to buy this phone?

We're the wrong market to be asking. The Razr was successful really only because of its status, not really functionality. That plus its (genuinely) cool factor of a folding screen, and this is for people who're willing to spend $$$ for status and fashion, and not budget conscious/functionality focused people that most of OzB would be.

Razr was never ridiculously overpriced though, it was within reasonable realms of affordability.

This is a status thing, but also likely due to the number of sales they'd expect. Not making heaps means they need to charge a premium for a decent ROI

Tried to find original RRP, best I found are reviewers stating $140-$200, and it was released late '04/05. Yes, value of money has changed in 15yrs, but that was an affordable phone. Just wasn't up to scratch spec-wise, was more about the design. Same as today!

Loved mine, except for the volume slider that was always unlocked and would get pressed in my pocket while at work (cafe) :/

      • Oh yeah the first one's popularity was almost, not accidental, but unexpected as to its degree.

But now that Apple (and Samsung) has paved the way for phones to be status symbols, and the Razr having that status symbol/fashion accessory pedigree, they're going to milk that for all they can.

        (Still, $2.7k is a tad obscene…)

Yep, and will fall flat on it's ass if the Galaxy Z comes out cheaper, which is better specced

The price will drop pretty quickly.

The price is due to the new technology (kind of) that they have. Folding screen phones are generally expensive at the moment given how new the tech is.

I wouldn't touch a foldable display phone with a 10 foot pole at this stage as the ones that have been release are expensive and unreliable. Until the bugs are ironed out and the price lowers, most people should avoid them.

Meh, I’m going to wait till it’s on an eBay coupon sale at $3,000, just so I can get it for 10% off

  • To be fair if you snap it in half you got 2 phones

  • Wow, you could buy a decent gaming PC for that coin!

  • Yeah it's expensive but the costs will come down as economies of scale increase.

I'm glad Samsung and Motorola are actually innovating smartphone design (or should I say, reviving an old form factor) instead of leaving consumers to wallow in a sea of identical-looking slabs of ever-increasing and extremely unwieldy proportions.

I wouldn't pay $2,699 for the luxury of a smaller phone footprint but if it were around $1,000, I'd gladly pay that much to have a phone that fits easily in your pocket while still having all of the benefits of a full-size smartphone when it's unfolded.

  • This really takes a Razr to your bank balance :D

Awesome throwback, but lacking the performance.

I am pretty eager for the Surface Duo to come out.

I would love to see a credible partnership between Microsoft and Google to deliver a spectacular 8inch experience in a form factor that is robust and reasonably transportable.

If we get the best of Android and Play Store Apps from Google and the best of Surface hardware, innovation and O365 from Microsoft, I'd be seeing it as a truly useful productivity device.

Potentially opportunity to get some work done without pulling out the laptop. It could really soak up some use cases with the two screens and hinge.

    Any other thoughts?

While a collaboration is probably out of the question, foldables are definitely going to be the next big thing

Dell unveiled concepts similar to what you want

    • I'm just really hoping the Duo comes with a 90 or 120Hz screen.
