    • is 9t pro big difference? Might hold off if it is

      • Get the 9t pro if you play a lot of high-graphics games on your phone.

        Spec comparison: https://www.gsmarena.com/compare.php3?idPhone1=9738&idPhone2…
Mostly identical, main difference is the CPU & GPU - for this 9T it's a Snapdragon 730 (mid range CPU launched in April 2019), versus in the 9T Pro a Snapdragon 855 (high end CPU launched in March 2019).
The performance difference between these creates a resulting difference in Antutu scores (a popular mobile bench-marking tool that tests UX, GPU, RAM, CPU, and I/O).
In Antutu, the 9T scores around 251,000, and the 9T Pro around 440,000.
To give some context, the current best mobiles score around 490,000 for Android (e.g. Oneplus 7T) or 550,000 for iOS (e.g. iPhone 11 pro max).
So to summarise and also compare to some other popular models: the 9T Pro gives performance that's not too far from to the current best Androids (with a score that's close to the Samsung Note 10 or the iPhone XS) and the 9T scores about half of that benchmark (with a score that’s close to the Samsung Note 8, or iPhone 7).

As to whether these benchmarks mean anything: some would say no, but I have a phone that scores 65,000, and sometimes it’s painful (e.g. I can’t stream music / a podcast, and navigate using google maps at the same time, without the audio cutting out constantly, as the CPU struggles and fails to keep up; and even when the phone is doing nothing, google assistant can be painfully slow to respond). So I feel that if you’re within say 1/3rd of the current top score, then everything should probably work fine… but when you drop below that, then new features are added & developers stop caring about old devices, and some stuff will stop working well on your phone. Therefore it comes down to how long you think you’ll use your phone for as your daily driver: if it’s a long time (e.g. 3 or 4 or 5 years) then favour the 9T Pro, if it’s less (say only a year or 2) then the 9T should be fine.

come on Amazon! price match and I will buy using gift card.

    • Unfortunately Amazon AU is often just not that competitive when it comes to mobile phones (and I say that as a Prime customer who quite happy to shop at Amazon when the price is right). My hope is that instead of just being a marketplace (like eBay) for others to sell phones (which is all they currently seem to be, at least for Xiaomi), they will start selling them themselves (much like how OfficeWorks and JB now carry some Xiaomi phones themselves), especially for Xiaomi and OnePlus phones. A competitive offering on both those brands from Amazon AU as a local seller would be very welcome.

I was tossing between this one and Xiaomi Note 8 Pro Global version that I bought last night (still hasn't been shipped). Below is my list - do your own research as I may values some functions higher than you and vice versa.

Note 8 pro was on sale on Aliexpress yesterday, maybe still is?
    I picked up 6Gb / 64 Gb version for $312 aud delivered.

Both phones have strengths and weaknesses when compared directly one with another. For me advantages of Note 8 Pro are greater than advantages of Mi9T, at least on paper. I read several reviews, interestingly enough performance of Note 8 Pro is better that Mi 9T - AnTuTu: 224759 (v7), 279355 (v8) vs 219448 for Mi9T. Note 8 Pro has bigger battery and lasts longer in real-life tests.

Rear-mounted fingerprint scanner (Note 8 Pro) vs behind-the-screen scanner etc.

Mi9T video stab works in more modes, for example Note 8 Pro does not have/use stab in 4K@30fps mode. Mi9T also has a telephoto lens, pop-up selfie camera (adds a delay if you want to use face-unlock) and supports aptX HD codec. Note 8 Pro has infrared port, Mi9T - AMOLED screen (slightly smaller though). Note 8 Pro - notch display (which I am personally OK with).

And, for sure, you can use MicroSD card with Note 8 Pro where Mi9T does not have that option.

    just my 2 cents :-)

Australian warranty would sway it to Mi 9T for me…

      • Makes sense.

  • Thoughts vs the v40?

    • +1

I woulda got v40 for 499 by now but the battery is just shocking apparently, and they only get worse with time.

  • Pixel Experience 10 on this phone is solid. For those who want up to date Android, the Devs are frequently maintaining with delta updates which means you only download ~100MB each build. Plus monthly security and play system updates are pushed.

PE 10 passes Safety Net so bank apps work.

    • How do you update? Is there ota? Or do you need to do it via the computer?

      • OTA

        • Does it have call screening as well?

  • +2

Thanks, bought a red one from Indro. They go faster apparently.

    • Hold it tight…

  • Gone back up to $599

    • +1

That is the price before you put the code in. Seems very little stock around.

Just ordered a black one for delivery 25th Feb.

      • Silly me 😶

      • You hope they have stock. My gut feeling is due to Coronavirus that's no stock for Q1 in 2020.

  • I just saw this offer this afternoon after checking out the Reno2 Z in store. Im currently using an S7 from 2 years ago and I think its about time for an upgrade. Both the 2Z and 9T seem good on paper but would like more opinions. Im a big fan of having a memory card so thatd why im hesitant on the 9T. Thanks friends

      Never . Go . Mediatek .

Just don't, it's not worth it. Shut the tab and walk away.

      • Is there a reason why its not worth it?

        • Past history most likely, but the Helio P90 is pretty damn good. I have the Reno2 Z and providing you don't want to mess around with modding, would highly recommend it.

          • @wombat1955: It sounds like there were problems with Mediatek in general rather than the P90 itself. Its been a while since I've poked around and made modifications to any phone (rip OnePlus One) so the 2Z doesnt sound like a bad buy.

I went from S7 to 9T and just today i had to load the old S7 up…..my god it looks shit, once you go AMOLED It's hard to go back.

I am 200% happy with the 9T even without a SD card. I just remove photos when it fills up.

      • +6

once you go AMOLED It's hard to go back.

Samsung S7 also with AMOLED screen

        • People like to justify their own purchases :D
          Best placebo!

    • 9T is better:
Widevine L1 and whitelisted by Netflix so you can watch FHD on all streaming services. You simply can't with Oppo.
      SD SoC so GCam port.
Zoom camera, which is almost always missing on midrange phones (Oppo included).
Mi 9T comes with Poco Launcher, which is fairly good launcher compared to Oppo (ColorOS).

  • Bit the bullet and bought it online, meant to get to me by the end of the month.

Been rocking a Oneplus One for around 5 years now, and been thinking of upgrading. It has done me well over the years, and LineageOS has kept it current.

Hopefully it is not a lemon and I'll be able to feel the difference.

  • Interestingly, the warranty on this phone is only one year. I thought Australia stock would have 2 years warranty, but it's not. It's not a deal-breaker but a point to be noted.

    • Under the ACL I thought that 2 years was pretty standard for a mobile phone. If for example it failed after 18 months, I would certainly be going back to jb with my receipt and invoking the ACL combined with a major failure, and I would not accept being pushed back to xiaomi, as jb are the retailer. This extra protection is one of the main reasons for buying from a local retailer.

  • Ended up buying one, thanks OP.

  • Says awaiting for stock. Probably no stock and can't get any from China due to virus

  • +1

Signed up just to thanks to the OP for posting this up.

Been needing a new phone for a bit and was about to go for the Reno Z, but this looks lots better.

Here's hoping they do actually have some stock! And it's not contaminated…

    • Why you say better than Reno beano when less rammy?

      • Processor and screen look loads better, especially with no notch. 6GB is plenty.

Downsides noted on most reviews were only:
        - speakers - what sensible person uses that aspect of a phone?
        - waterproofing - don't drop it in the pool!
        - MIUI skin. Better than usual apparently, but it's rootable or just use Nova launcher

        • damn now i cannot decidey

        • Mi 9T actually comes with Poco Launcher so that solves part of MIUI skin (No App drawer on MIUI but does have pretty good App drawer on Poco Launcher for instance). The K20 which is China version doesn't have Poco Launcher and has Ads.

  • +2

Seems like they restocked a bunch! My local stores all have a availability for c&c if shipping costs are an issue.

    • You're right! Is it easy enough to change a delivery order to pickup?

      • I have no idea, sorry. I just picked mine up at a further store haha :(

      • +1

So I called up, and no. I then went looking online and yeah, no.

You could cancel online order and buy instore maybe?

        • +1

Yeah, I had the same result. I stuck with delivery. The stocks have evaporated in store, so will have to wait, unfortunately :-(

  • Anyone else having trouble making payment when using C&C? I click the Proceed to Payment link and nothing happens. No phone numbers on JB site to call for assistance either.

    • Figured it out…JB's payment gateway doesn't like VPN!

  • I'm actually considering this after first thinking the pop up camera is a turn off. But I don't take any selfies so its not a big issue.
Just thinking is it worth an upgrade from a Huawei Mate 10 Pro?

    • My Mate 9 went for a swim, which prompted my upgrade to the Mi9T.
I miss the proper fingerprint reader from my Mate 9. The in-screen one is nowhere near as good, you NEED dry hands and you need to be at the correct angle.
Overall, it is an upgrade from the Mate 9, the multi-camera setup is useful and performance is marginally better, but probably more of a sidegrade from the Mate 10.

      • I'm the other way, I love in screen, I never have to press power button anymore, I just grip it with my thumb over the sensor when taking it out of my pocket.

The SLOOOOOOOOOOW popup is kinda annoying for face unlock, but I prefer no notch.

        • Never pressed a Power button with a dedicated FP reader either.

Too many times it simply doesn't work at all and eventually it just times out and you're forced to enter the unlock key.
It's infuriating that you need to be in the same orientation, surely that's just a software fix, but why wasn't it included originally and why hasn't it come already?
And lastly, even when it does work, it's slower than a real FP reader.

Downside of the popup selfie cam is that Face-unlock isn't already there as a backup to unlock when the FP fails, but woudln't be a problem if FP worked as well as the dedicated ones.

          • +1

@ESEMCE: The FP works pretty good for me only ever fails if my finger is wet or dirty I've only got the stock Global MIUI. I hear is bad with roms, if you are using stock try redoing the same finger as a second input but use more of the edges for the scans if that makes sense.

            • @Bowchkawowow: Done all that, I've actually got 3 scans of the same thumb! Running stock AU firmware.
              It's simply not as good.

I suspect it's just less forgiving of even the slightest moisture to the point that my body (as a Rafael Nadal style sweater, I can break a sweat just by concentrating too much) is borderline too "wet".

Does your scan if you try from an unusual angle?
ie phone on desk, scan thumb at 90 degrees instead of from ~45 degrees as you typically would if you were holding the phone?

              • @ESEMCE: Ya I've got a bunch of different angles like tip of my thump side of my thumb and it pretty much never fails, it's not as fast as say a s10e dedicated FP scanner but it pretty fast for me like 1-2 seconds max where as the s10e used to unlock in like milliseconds.

              • @ESEMCE: What SIM do you use? Does VoLTE work for you?

                • @[Deactivated]: The Ozbargainer's network, Boost…

I've done the Disable check code trick, but I have no idea if VoLTE works or not as a result. I have never thought to check and TBH I have no idea what to look for even if it is working!
According to others in this thread it doesn't.

                  • @ESEMCE: Ah, cool. Thanks.

                  • @ESEMCE: I got my 9T delivered from JB yesterday and have been playing around with it with a Boost SIM card. I have tried ##86583## which indicates that VoLTE is enabled but calls revert to 3G not VoLTE. On Whirlpool some have indicated that you have to call Boost to get VoLTE enabled. I may call them later on today.

BTW - loving this phone, I thought that my old OnePlus 3T was pretty snappy but this eclipses it (besides the OP does not have band 28 so not so good with Boost)

      • probably more of a sidegrade from the Mate 10.

That's what I was thinking too

  • Does the pop up camera come up every single time you unlock the phone? Have seen that on a few video reviews. any idea of loudspeaker quality on this?

    • Yes. Loudspeaker quality is average

      • Loudspeaker is fine… It's not good for music, but for Podcasts and speakerphone it's got good loudness and clarity.

    • +1

Only if you swipe up to unlock. The other options are PIN/pattern (if set) and fingerprint (if set)

  • +1

Did anyone go with the flame red colour? Wonder if it looks better in person. A shame they don't have the blue one

    • +2

I got the flame red - wife loves it but when you put a case on (it actually comes with a basic case as well) you don't really know it's red.

      • +1

hah true i always spend hours debating phone colours but cases make it redundant anyway

      • Need to grab my case (linked in this thread already)… I only have the Carbon Black, so it's pretty boring, but for the Flame Red it would be perfect.

  • JB just restocked so bought in store, very nice. Loads of phone for 399, and local warranty incase anything happens.

    • is there a way of checking where stock is? we are in country victoria and only option is to have delivered (no in store or click and collect) and wont be ready till end of this month the website is saying

      • +1

Just on the website there should be an in-store pickup option. But it's weird all the physical stock has been removed from my area, there was plenty 3 hours ago, maybe JB is allocating it for online orders.

        • Phoned my local store as showing no stock online and they have four available. Weird

  • Anyone managed to price match with Officeworks?

Edit: Nevermind, "Excludes Cashback and coupon offers (i.e. supplier cashback or reduced price available via paper coupon or electronic codeword)"

  • +1

Is it the same price if you buy instore or you need to buy online with the coupon code and do C&C?

    • You will need to print the email with the barcode to buy instore.

      • I bought 2 in store. Simply quoted the barcode numbers.

Tried to use a generator, but it didn't scan.

Staff have no idea about the discount code.

  • Anyone had their phone shipped/delivered yet?

    • I swear my order status said at one stage "Processing", but now it just says "Unfulfilled".

      • Yeah, mine too. I was just wondering if they were shipping in waves and if anyones had been dispatched yet

      • It still said available online.

    • Ordered yesterday, arrived today.

Tracking shows the stock came from a local store.

      • Wow, lucky bugger. Hopefully i wont have to wait too long then

      • Also ordered yesterday at about 11.30am and it arrived at 7.30am this morning (Sydney). So far so good!

    • Still sitting on unfulfilled after ordering on the 11th :<

  • The 7 day wait to unlock the boot loader is painful.

    • +1

if the remote control doesnt work to open the boot press the button under the front steering wheel on the drivers seat

      • Nice, thanks :D

        • Hah sorry I don't actually know what you mean bout 7 day wait

  • -1

    Sit tight.
Xiaomi just announced Mi10 and Mi10Pro.

    • Sitting tight with my Mi 9t :), most Ozbargainers understand what triggers big discounts. And no , it's not cause the IT guy thought it would be fun.

      • "All that said, another Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro specs leak conflicts with the one above, stating that the phone has a Snapdragon 865 chipset, 16GB of RAM, 512GB of storage, a 5,250mAh battery, a 6.4-inch 1080 x 2080 screen, and a quad-lens camera with 108MP, 16MP, 12MP and 5MP sensors."

16GB Ram, 512GB Storage, most powerful that some PC XD.

        • Tell me the price XD

    • +3

Sit tight waiting for a brand new version to drop to $400?!

  • +6

Heads up for anyone buying this phone and are also with Boost. To get VoLTE activated I had to call Boost and they put me through to the techies from Telstra who then enabled VoLTE on my phone. Took about 15 minutes to show up after the call.
