  • Any reason why someone will go for this instead of Vodafone tv?

    • +2

      I would assume specs.
Those Telco branded android TVs tend to be the bare minimum, even a Roku etc are not usually that powerful.
Might play most stuff fine but if you download big content like a 10bit hdr 4k movie at 50gb that's when you will see it chug usually. Or ram issues.
Get an NVIDIA shield and be happy 🤣

      • +1

Until Nvidia Au pulls their head out their butts and starts selling them locally, getting a shield is a tricky thing. The 2019 ver is perpetually OOS!

        • Very easy to get an NVIDIA shield even the latest 2019 model tube. I think b&h sell them at a fair price and shipping is low.
The shield is by far the best experience, everything flies, it's my main steaming box, media playback device and emulation.

          • @[Deactivated]: The 2019 pro version is sold out everywhere online. Units that are available are pickup only

      • +1

Spec-wise they are actually fairly close. The couple of different thing is that Mi Box S has auto frame rate switching and native Prime Video.

The big one for me is no ethernet. You can do some fudgy things like getting a USB->Eth but I don't think it's a super experience and you're limited to 100mbps (USB 2). If you don't need or want ethernet, it's a great box.

          • +2

@jaymzrsa: Vodafone TV only has 100mbps Ethernet port too, but yes I bought the VTV due to Ethernet port and cheaper price. While I have great Wifi coverage I actually put them on schedule so I need the Ethernet port.

    • For me, the VodaTV is fine for the most part. I went with a Mi box for one TV due to needing the optical out for on older 5.1 system to bit-stream DD/DTS. I have both, but will be looking at a Shield when I upgrade to a 4K tv soon.

    • Is the vodafone tv still available to buy tho?

      • Yes. I just bought one off the Vodafone website last week. Love it! Everything just works.

    • My Vodafone TV boxes just got the android TV 9 upgrade, they are really good now

  • Great box but don't update the OS to Oreo. Bugged as shit for now.

    • The S comes with Oreo, and the bugs have been ironed out. Update fully, and consider a factory reset if you're having issues.

These are USD $60 boxes, so this is barely a sale price. Sub-$80 is good for this.

    • Flash sale as it states on the item page. Best price at time of posting unless you can share something otherwise?

Updated expiry - page now states it goes for another week

      • +1

It's under $90 every day of the week on AliExpress. Should go on sale at the end of the month, complete with sizeable coupons and cashbacks, which would put it close to $70.

All of that said, these are basically 3 year old devices now, and you're looking at a major hardware refresh for this device category over the next 12 months.

The S905X used in these is now up to its fourth iteration, the S905X4, which supports 4k120 via AV1 decoding, and then there's a bunch of hardware a tier up that will support 8k60 video as well (and perhaps higher).

I'd expect properly certified S905X4 devices to come in at around this price, so that's a consideration in a year where HDMI 2.1 and genuine 120Hz panels are coming into the mid-range segment.
