As expected, Virgin Australia has followed suit and offering free cancellations.

Virgin is allowing cancellations for travel up to 30/6 whereas QANTAS/Jetstar is till 31/5.

News.com.au

Virgin Australia has announced a similar policy for its customers.

“We are aware of new travel restrictions announced by the Australian Government and are assessing our response,” the airline said.

“We understand these restrictions may affect guests’ travel plans. Virgin Australia guests with international bookings from now until 30 June 2020, who no longer want to travel, have the option to change their flight to a later date and/or to a different destination, without incurring a change fee.

“They’ll just need to cover the difference if the value of the new fare is greater than the original. If they want to cancel their flight, they are eligible to receive credit to a Travel Bank with no cancellation fee.”

For anybody that has booked with points on Virgin. According to PointHacks: https://www.pointhacks.com.au/coronavirus-fee-waivers/

"If you have made a redemption with Velocity Points, you can change or cancel it for free: ‘you can self manage your cancellation online for any Reward Seat redemptions originally paid using 100% Points and receive a full refund’".

But actually, you can't. Because after you login and go to cancel your booking, it tells you need to call the call-center to do so, which is closed.

  • I had booked 4 VA domestic flights for family interstate Easter holidays. two were booked using anz rewards credit card vouchers and 1 via amex velocity plat travel credit and another via gift card and amex. will I be able to get a refund for the one paid via gift card and amex card and then others travel credit into a single velocity account to use in 12 months time?

    • I'm in same boat, could you please update me on any outcomes you have

      • I tried to cancel online but i get "This booking can only be cancelled by calling our Guest Contact Centre." i called the Guest Contact Centre on 13 67 89 but they said call centre is closed in Philippines and that they are only taking calls for people flying in the next 48 hours and to call back at later date. is there an email i can write to cancel all the 4 separate bookings.?

        • Yeah so basically I'm just waiting till 48 hours before my flight. Hoping they'll either cancel it before then literature I'll get the travel credit from them.

How long were you in the phone for?

          • @witsa: I cant get through to guest centre, ANZ or Amex :(

For anyone who booked flights with ANZ travel rewards, I just got off the phone with their call center (minimal wait time). The process is:
    - they can cancel the flights for credit
    - to rebook flight using those credits, call ANZ as they are holding onto your credit (make sure you quote the original booking reference starting with 2 or 3, NOT the Virgin one as this no longer exists)
    - you must fly within 12 months from the original booking date (this may change)
    - you pay any different in fare or taxes, but cancellation and change fees are waived

    Hope this helps :)

So just checked, it seems Virgin has cancelled my flight to the Gold Coast.

However, they've moved me to a different flight - of course they haven't actually told me about it.

I'm not sure how I could've found this out if I hadn't checked.

Has anyone successfully gotten a refund if they cancel the flight?

    • Yes they gave me a 12 month travel credit voucher hopefully they are still here in 12 months time !

      • Did your call them? I'm hoping I'll get a refund cause the flight is cancelled

        • Yes called them took around 45mins

  • for the virgin flight booking got email today saying the flight had been changed to go via melb to cbr. it had two buttons on email to click accept or covid19. i clicked the covid19 button took me to hub typed on details and then it says ill get an email for the travel credit online later after they process it. i would have preferred a refund on the credit card if it was an option ? i dont know if they will be in business in 12 months time.

    • i didn't receive an email. They just changed my flight without telling me.

Surely, if they cancel the flight, they have to offer a refund.

  • Hi everyone, like some of you, I am supposed to fly TigerAir (booked via Trip.com) this Sat from Brisbane to Adelaide. I read about the offer of travel credit but I was not happy with that so I decided to not take the offer. Instead, I just waited. Then, Trip.com shot me an email this morning offering me a cancellation and a refund of the money I had paid for the said flight within the next 10 days .

I am not rubbing it in. I am just saying it might be worthwhile to wait a bit and talk to your travel agent first before taking the TigerAir offer.

  • id prefer a refund but if you cant get through telephone to call centre like me . virigin and amex velocity credit plat card bookings you can cancel and accept a travel credit via http://apps.virginaustralia.com/booking-cancellation/index.p… for anz and other travel agent bookings looks like you have to call up your agent .

  • I got my booking cancelled but didnt get my points back / refund O_O (yet)
