So just finished the call with telstra. Got them to make it pre-paid and only charge was 390$.

        • Pre-paid instead of terminating completely?

          • @miruki: They wanted to terminate completely but i said i wanted to keep the number so they made it into pre-paid.

            • @tee cee: Got it. Thanks for the information!

    • The S9 and S9+? Which store was this? The S9s aren't even advertised online unfortunately

Ok, I have now gone through all the necessary steps to make this deal work. As no-one has posted all the answers in one comment, I will break it down for you all below step by step:

    Thursday 09/04

    1) 8.00am - Went to my nearest Coles express service station and purchased an OPTUS pre-paid mobile SIM card for $2.00. You can also get this from Woolworths or Coles supermarkets.
    2) 8.20am - Returned home and went to the OPTUS activate website found here: https://www.optus.com.au/activate
    3) Filled in my details and followed all the prompts to complete the application. There was a part where it asked to select a pre-paid plan, but I was able to click a link that said 'Recharge later' that allowed me to skip this part entirely - which I did. I also used the drivers licence ID option for the identity check. Hit the submit button and was given a message immediately that said: my activation was complete - activation can take 15 minutes to a few hours or something.
    4) I inserted the OPTUS SIM card I purchased into a spare unlocked phone I had lying around and waited.
    5) 8.30am - About 10 minutes later I checked my phone with the OPTUS SIM and it was showing as connected to the OPTUS network. I then restarted the phone to make sure it was properly connected
    6) To test it was properly connected, I tried to call the phone from another phone - I was unable to connect, the call just ended without any message. I then tried to call from the phone to my own phone - this didn't work wither, the call didn't even start ringing. I then checked it would let me call the 000 emergency number as this number is allowed without having available credit - this worked and I got the automated message that said only to proceed if I was experiencing a real emergency. I ended the call there as it confirmed I was properly connected to the network.
    7) 9.00am - I then drove to my local Good Guys store and spoke to the first salesman I saw about applying for the deal. Told them i wanted to port in my number from the OPTUS network and they said 'Sure, that is necessary to be eligible for the deal'. At the time, they said their network was down and they were unable to complete it right then and there. They took all my details down on a form and said they would try and put it through again as soon as the network was back up. They placed a new S10 handset in the cupboard to ensure it would be available once the paperwork was processed. I was given a Telstra SIM card and told to keep checking my (OPTUS) phone throughout the day - once it showed that I had lost connection to the OPTUS network, it meant that the port had been completed and to call the store to confirm.
    8) 1.30pm - Checked the OPTUS phone and it was showing EMERGENCY CALLS ONLY in the network bar.
    9) Called the Goodguys store and they said - YEP - all paperwork had been completed without drama and I could come collect the handset now.
    10) 2.10pm - Arrived back at the Goodguys store, paid $149.00 and walked out with a brand new sealed Prism Black S10.
    11) 2.50pm - Got home and checked my emails. Had a bunch from both OPTUS and TELSTRA about the whole porting process - last one from Telstra saying that port had been completed and to enjoy my new life with Telstra.
    12) 3.10pm - Called Telstra support via 132200, selected the option to talk to someone about mobile accounts. There was an automated message advising that call waiting could be a very significant amount of time due to COVID-19 as their phone centres had limited staff etc etc. I sighed and mentally prepared myself for an hour plus of Telstra hold music, to be broken intermittently by apologies for the wait and reminders of how important my business was. Surprisingly, I got through in 3 minutes lol.
    13) 3.13pm Spoke to a very nice woman and informed her that I wished to end my current mobile contract with Telstra. She bought up my number and advised there would be early termination fees. I then asked how much the fees would be and she said it would be a total of $390.00. I then asked her to proceed and terminate my contract as I had no problem with the early termination fee. She said I would receive my final (and first) bill in a few days and it would only show the $390.00 amount - no other other fees or charges would be applicable.
    14) I am now waiting for the final (and first) bill to complete the whole deal.

Overall, $149.00 for the phone, $390.00 for early termination = $539.00 all up.
I have now put my Boost SIM into the phone and have happily made calls/messages with no problems at all. The whole thing took just over 7 hours to do.

    Just a few notes:
    - DO NOT ask them if you can port a new number in that you have just created. Of course they will say 'NO' you can't. They also have no way of confirming that, SO DON'T TELL THEM.
    - I have tried to do this again today for my partner as she desperately needed an upgrade. It appears that OPTUS have changed their SIM activation site and you can no longer select an option to recharge later. You now need to recharge at the time you activate the SIM in the same transaction. There is however an option to use a recharge voucher instead of using bank details etc. I went to a servo and got a $10 pre-paid voucher printed from Coles Express. Returned home and entered that into the field and selected a $10 pre-paid plan. I preferred this option as I did not want to have a direct debit setup to my bank account/credit card. The application completed and the service was active in an amazing 5 minutes. It was very early in the morning though, so maybe I got in whilst it was quiet. Unfortunately, when we got to the Goodguys store, I was advised all S10 handsets were now sold out and they would not be getting more stock before the promo ended due to COVID-19 delivery delays. Oh well, only lst $10, but still saved $400.00 on the first handset, so wasn't upset at all.

    • Amazing write up with all the important details, thank you.

    • Thanks a bunch for the summary!

What does the purchase invoice from the good guys state for the cost of the handset? Eg. [$149 total] or [$997 total with a $848 gift card used]

      Thanks!

    • Step 11, did the emails contain details of a JB HI FI deal rather than TGG?

      • Hello, the emails did not include anything about JB or TGG. It was all about the porting process.

Optus - We have received your port out request, let us know if you do not authorise this etc etc
Telstra - We have received your porting request and it is underway etc etc and then another one that was 'Welcome to Telstra'

In case you were wondering, I did actually try to see if JB were running the deal as well - they said no. The JB salesman actually laughed at me until I showed him the deal on TGG website. He almost fell over, but said it definitely wasn't being done at JB as far as he was aware. He spent 10 minutes in the system looking for me.

    • Have you received any gift cards from Good guys? i received 400$ gift card . However i am still waiting for phone as they are out of stock. I suspect they have signed me up to wrong plan

      • I think you may have selected the wrong option. The deal was for a Samsung Galaxy S10 OR a $400.00 gift card. Not both.

        • Yeah I think they messed it up I specifically asked them for s10 offer and also paid 149$ . I will go to store again on Sunday. Their staff are clue less and kept saying s10 is not in stock and will be available in couple of days.

          • @BK12: Defo an error from them then. Hopefully they can sort it out for ya.

          • @BK12: Did you end up sorting this out?

            • @LiQiD: Finally yes, I called them up on Sunday and as usual they told me same story so I went instore to have chat with someone. Lucky this time found a really nice rep who checked with someone at Head office and yes finally admitted they messed up.

Luckily manager was onsite so he offered to give me S20 if I am willing to use my 400$ credit that i got from this plan

So end of story got S20 instead of s10 for $149 upfront

He also offered $843 credit to buy anyone instore as second option but TGG have really limited range and stock

              But finally, thanks

              • @BK12: Great outcome! Unfortunate about the error but sounds like they made up for it with the S20. Happy for you buddy.

                • @Miyagi: Thanks , Good deal for me:)

Similar experience to Arcticfox but took longer, total 2.5hrs.

used an old catch (optus) that had expired but still received sms.

first to enter the Malaga store, was told on Thursday 3 units in stock.

    while processing they were gone.

number initially didn't seem valid, the store even called it to confirm working.

then I had problems with a previously incorrect address on an old Telstra account. but managed to correct it.

but went through in the end.

in the car park cancelled the contract as was told $390 fee and no monthly fee. Very quick to get connected. I didn't insert the new sim so just had to verify the account with other details.

    • I went to their Belmont store
I signed up there and the sim activated about 3 hours later
They had no phones in stock
They're transferring one from their Clarkson store (I believe they still have a few) but I'm only getting it tomorrow
I was with Aldi for just over 2 weeks after porting from Telstra and had no problem getting this deal

    • Very good outcome! Who do you call to cancel Telstra?

  • My experiencd today so far:.
10am Bought new Optus Sim- forced me to load a 10 dollar credit.
1030 Ported number from Boost to Optus.
    1035: optus number working fine.
1100am: Good guys to do paperwork. They saved phone. Manual form to telstra.
2:45 call from good guys advising there had been an error that there was no account with Optus

    Anyone experience similar?
Running out of ideas and time on deal ay

    • I had an issues where my number was not showing valid (also optus), they had to create it manually in the system under my profile.

      not sure if same issue.

    • 1030 Ported number from Boost to Optus.

      i think that's your problem

      • Ive read comments on here that said they have done similar and it worked with the above process. So did a new optus number need to come across?
I have an old Woolworths Sim.. is that gonna be same issue as well as they use telstra number?

        • hey so it worked after a couple of days. they were confused but persisted with Telstra and managed to get that Boost number, swapped to Optus same day across to Telstra on this deal

  • Anyone get a confirmation email saying that their plan is with JB Hi-Fi? I'm so confused. I have registered and purchased my phone from TGG, but it says I am on a JB Hi Fi BYO plan.

    • Yeah JB Hifi email confirmation but they are still struggling to port number across

      • I had a bad experience, and not sure on what I should do now…

They put the IMEI number of a particular phone, and then gave me a different phone with a different IMEI and said it was OK……

        • Which store?

Im not conviencied i got the right phone as well. Should nunbers on the invoice match as i couldnt see anything that did.

JB HI-FI own the Goodguys so the plans are usually made for JB in name and then used by the Goodguys.
      Don't worry, it's all good.

  • You would think they dont give a sh1t if you come from a new sim. New business is new busines. Covid19 world they should take what they can get.
It isnt as if 60gb data gonna be much use in next few months (unless you have no wifi)

    • +1

I'm sure they'll take that excellent and well-presented advice under advisement.

      • +1

Well at least consider it. And dont get me started on health insurance :)

    • +1

I think part of the idea is they're luring genuine business from competitors.

      • not sure inactive SIM or prepaid small value is that significant

    • They have a loophole, people will blame them and call them stupid.

They close the loophole, people will complain and teach them how to do business.

      Can't win.

  • Anybody have issues porting out from Vodafone prepaid? Been a whole day and my network still hasn't dropped out yet. New Telstra sim is still inactive.

    • +1

Well i am with optus started porting on saturday still my optus sim is active ,i am going to contact the tgg today to know if there are any issues

      • Cool, not only me then. I thought maybe something to do with the public holidays. I'll give it another day.

      • +1

jassd, if you haven't already given TGG a call, try. They said mine was stuck 'provisioning' and pushed it through while I was speaking to them.

        • yeah went in on Saturday.. still waiting.
they have asked for previous address even tho we have been here 7 years.

        • Yeah mate just went there on monday, they had put wrong optus account number once fixed took 5 minutes ,I am already coverted to Prepaid will move to boost or somthing later

  • Wow amazing people are getting this to work. Think Ill get one today!

  • Would i have the same result if i port out of Telstra Sim to vodafone sim as soon as i get the phone.. or do i need to call Telstra in order to cancel the contract. I'm assuming that if i port out of Telstra, they will automatically cancel the contract and charge me ETC for breaking the contract.

    • I also would like to know this too.

  • Anyone doing this make sure u have at least a hour free. Takes that long to process everything. Don't rock up a hour before close because they will send u packing.

  • I tried to cancel, but I was told my drivers licence is wrong (if that is the case I wouldn't have got the plan right ?). I was told go to a Telstra store and get it done. I would also like to know, if I port out ,will it cancel my plan. I think lotto of ppl are trying to get the plan, they must keep in mind it is not easy to terminate the plan also

    • Was pretty easy when I did it.

Don't know why you needed a licence to cancel.
They just asked me my details and then sent a text message to my phone to verify.

      • They ask for license to prove account ownership if the mobile number isn't taking calls. I.e. haven't inserted the Sim.

        • I did call from my ported number, will try again, I am sure now I have to pay first month. But still it is worth it

  • Sold out Vic wide, only nsw left :(

  • Hello all.. Had issues signing up for my wife today as she is in Australia for past 2 years and they wanted past 6 years address in Australia to sign her up… That's weird.. Really wanted to sign her up.. Any ideas to overcome this…?

  • So, I got my S10 yesterday. I'm happy with this great deal but I've got to admit, I'm not finding the S10 to be a great phone. Maybe I'm used to Google Pixel phones but I feel that they implement Android much better than Samsung. I knew it was a smaller phone but I'm not enjoying the size. I'll give it a few more days but I may pass it on to my wife and go back to my 2XL.

  • I got myself one and convinced my frined and his wife to grab it. Is it worth keeping the sim only plan with telstra? Ive been meaning to switch to them for a while because vodafone has bad signal in my area but if that plan isnt very cost effective i might as well cancel it.

    • Hi.. I had issues signing up for my wife today as she is in Australia for past 2 years and they wanted past 6 years address in Australia to sign her up… Any ideas to overcome this…? Did you have to give your past 6 years address

I scored one finally, but such a long winded process.

On Sat afternoon, I called a GG store to confirm stock availability. They said to check website, I explained I had been burned before where website showed SOH but there was none. They checked for me and said 2 in stock.
I arrived at the store 15 minutes later, rep checked stock and said none left. WTF, I verbally abused him and left.

Happened to drive by another store whilst on my way to get groceries, took the chance and popped in - had stock HURRAY. Took about 1 hour to complete paperwork. I used a recently expired Catch Connect 90 day sim. It was late in the day already, they said to come back and pick up phone when new sim activated.

Telstra SIM did not activate until Monday, picked up no issues, paid $149.
Called Telstra as soon as I got home, did not have to wait on hold, got through immediately. The rep took about 5 minutes to cancel. Haven't received the final ETC bill yet but he confirmed it was $390.

    • +1

I verbally abused him and left

      Nice…

    • +1

WTF, I verbally abused him and left.

      Class act, very OzBargain.

    • "I scored one finally, but such a long winded process."

Geeze mate, you scored one for $539, after abusing a shop assistant and then reneging on a contract.

      And you're complaining??

      • -2

I'm not complaining… just sharing my experience.

  • Just signed up at TGG at Taylors Lakes. They're out of the black coloured ones but can order in more if you're after the black. They had white and green available so I went with the green.

Got told this is a Telstra promo, hence Telstra is paying TGG the outstanding balance after the $149 paid by the customer.

    • Hm - I got told that TGG were clearing out old stock. Also that the plan was normally a Telstra 40GB for BYO and the extra 20GB a TGG bolt on bonus.

  • Thank you OP. Just had my first day off work in awhile and woke up to go to the good guys. Got the deal, last one in store and only white available but it was for the wife so all good. The only thing was when I had to hand him my license and medicare card and he was handling everything, lol. I felt compelled to keep them separate and wash them when I got home. All done in store and walked home with a new phone, will stay with Telstra this time I think.

  • I got the phone on 13th and then caceled my plan and moved to pre paid telstra over the chat being told there is etc 390, today i got a bill for 65$ for period 13April to 12May, has anyone else got the same issue

    • I think it just takes awhile for the cancellation paperwork to come through and we will get some residual emails that auto generate without knowing the plan has already been terminated. When I first signed up, I could see the account on the Telstra 24x7 account site. The next day the whole account was gone. That is a good indicator to me that the plan has been terminated.

      • Did you get you ETC bill ?

        • Not yet, but can confirm the number is no longer connected. When I dial the number on another phone, I get a telstra message saying the number has been disconnected. I continue to wait patiently.

  • When did this expire? My partners Galaxy s7 just died and now I'm desperate to get a new bargain phone that will last and be compatible with 5g. Any suggestions please?

    • +1

The phone in this deal is expired. But it is not 5G compatible anyway.
There's only a few models in Australia which is 5G compatible and it is highly unlikely you will get them for a bargain price. These models are all at a premium price. Simple google search mate.

      • Bummer. Was looking at getting either the s10 or s20. Didn't want too much of a layout cost in the current climate. Hoping TGG or JBHIFI have another deal soon then

  • Has anyone received the ETC bill yet. It's been over a week and I've not received mine…

    • same here. Still waiting

    • Nothing yet.and they said 16th for me.

    • I got a bill today for $6.50 for the three days that I was on this plan before I ported away. Thought it would just be the ETC bill but looks like its additional.

    • I got mine two days ago for $390.

  • Just checking if anyone received 400$ gift card as well ? i took this plan on 15th and they didn't had any stock . I received 400$ gift card on 17th and still haven't received the phone as they still don't have instock, their after sales service is bad . I called them multiple times and no one seems to have any idea on ETA of stock arrival. I now suspect they might have registered me for wrong plan

    • I'm a bit confused here, the deal is not to get a $400 gift card - this is a different promo that Good Guys run.

Have you received emailed from Telstra that confirms you are on the 12month $65 plan?

Did the rep tell you to come back when phone is back in stock?

Something tells me you are not getting a phone as you took the $400 gift card in lieu of.

      • Yes got an email from Telstra, plan activated on 15th evening.i confimed with them multiple times and I already paid 149$ upfront cost. I think they seriously messed it up

        • What does the receipt of the $149 upfront say?

          • @thydzik: It says Security deposit and balance left is 848 , i asked the same question they said they will apply rest as store credit when phone arrives. The lady who served me has no clue what she was doing

            • @BK12: How did you received the gift card? Did they give you a copy of the sign up form?

              • @LiQiD: i got it in email after couple of days, yeah she filled the signup form

  • It's now over 1 month, I am yet to receive my ETC bill.

    anyone else?

    • Same. I haven't received mine either

    • I have not received mine either…

Am torn between contacting them to find out if the bill has been sent to the wrong place or just hang tight and hope it never shows up at all. The only worry being that the bills are actually going somewhere I have not checked and it will turn into debt collector status before I have a chance to sort it out.

      • I am worried about that too, as I had some unknown address issues when I was signing up.

How can they send a debt collector though if they don't know your address.

edit: but I thought bills were sent via email anyway.

        • I know what you are saying, I just know it can be a nightmare to sort out if they ping my credit rating with a bad report.
Would much rather pay the outstanding bill than have to deal with all that.

          • @Arcticfox: you got me worried now, maybe I'll just call and see what is happening with the bill.

    • Nothing yet

    • Got mine on 12/5/20. $392.16 = ETC + 1 day of plan connected as expected. No surprises.

  • I still haven't received my ETC yet. I don't even have the sim anymore so that I can test whether they actually cancelled properly or not. Anyone else still waiting? Should I be worried?

    • Same here no ETC as well. But i ported my number out and currently using it.

    • same, haven't received anything. haven't followed up yet.

out of curiosity did you insert the sim cart?

      • I did initially just to check that activation complete so that I could terminate immediately.
