VPN Not Allowed in Public Wi-Fi?

Tried using VPN in a Public/ Common Wi-Fi. Can't connect to any VPN location. I believe it's the router settings as it won't let you go to the lotto website as well (no VPN used). How do I bypass this restriction to enable VPN?

  • Try an SSH tunnel - if port 22 isn't blocked and the VPN provider supports it.

Personally, I don't use public wifi. If you're using a VPN, it is likely you're worried about your security/privacy whilst on the wifi. The best protection is to not use it and use 4g instead.

    • That's fine, but I thought you had a VPN to get to other regions. Apart from protection and you want to use free WiFi not your data.

I treat my network security like my women.

Only when you know the users can you be sure you won't catch anything. Even if you want to try something out from a different country, a VPN (condom) is no guarantee with a public network (sex worker/random in a bar etc).

Depending on the router set up & the type of VPN your providers support. Usually PPTP is easy to detect and block. SSTP or OpenVPN on TCP port 443 on the other hand are harder to block on trivial router configurations. Check whether your provider supports those.

    • Yes, may be they have blocked GRE altogether which will kill PPTP inherently, also this is the default configuration of OpenWRT. just in case they are using OpenWRT in WiFi AP

If you can select the port the VPN uses, ports 443 and 80 are usually the best to get around blocks.

443 is the port used for https://
80 is the port used for http://

It's hard to block those without blocking everything important.

443 & 80 are good tips. Many vpn operate using UDP, so using port 53/UDP can sometimes work. Which vpn client do you have? What OS do you have?

    • unless they have DPI

      • I not too familiar with Deep Packet Inspection, but if the Chinese government's GFW struggles with OpenWeb on TCP/443 even on their strictest lock downs, I'd assume it will work on most public wifi setups.

  • You can try a proxy provider but there is an 80% chance that is also blocked.

  • Thanks for the responses. Will try tinkering with the app for the settings.

Now to buy another modem so I have a separate VPN modem at the abode
