The incredibly realistic story of one family's struggle to survive the destruction of New York in a massive terror attack. Million-copy bestseller now in development for film by 20th Century Fox.

Mike Mitchell is an average New Yorker struggling just to keep his family together when a string of disasters shreds the bustling megacity around them.

The Internet and communication networks go down…a deadly epidemic rages across the country…then a monster snowstorm cuts New York off from the world.

Days go by without contact to the outside world. Then weeks. Murder and vigilante justice replace law and order. Millions fight to survive.

In the chaos, conspiracy theories rage about a foreign cyberattack. Was it the North Koreans? The Russians? The Chinese? Might it be the first shockwave of a global shift in power? But even these questions become unimportant as Mike and his family struggle for survival in the wintry tomb of a doomed New York.

Ha. I just checked and got "Purchased on June 22, 2014" (Amazon.com).

I'm sure I'll get around to reading it at some point.

      • November 22, 2015 for me

    • August 17, 2019 here

    • Read it on Kindle in 2015. Well worth the money I paid for it (as above). Think I was in a generous mood rating it 3 stars. This was a far more interesting read despite having a few obvious holes in the plot.

  • Reading that synopsis has brke my brain

I assume i it didn't, your the boosk target audience?

I didn’t find this book engaging. I wasn’t invested in the characters at all. Finished the book nonetheless.

But keep an eye out for his other book Nomad which sometimes goes free too. I really enjoyed that story.

How can they tell that it is “incredibly realistic” ?

    • Rofl. 5 star comment. It certainly had an incredibly bad ending.

Amazon book descriptions are "incredibly unrealistic". Luckily you can read a sample before you buy.
Sometimes that isn't enough. Eg, this was the Amazon spiel for another free book.

"This gripping spy-thriller combines the excitement and suspense of Ian Fleming with the reality of John LeCarre. The author is a former federal criminal investigator and intelligence officer and he uses his background knowledge to bring the characters to life….."

I like a good spy story so I tried, and tried, and tried…..but eventually failed to get beyond the formulaic writing, the cliche, the repetition, the confusion of characters, and the occasional completely-misused words, so gave up.

Good so that people that value their time can see a movie !

  • Hmm, the synopsis sounded plausible until I got to the part about a deadly epidemic sweeping across the country. But hey that's why they call it fiction.
