nbn and ethernet solution for Gamer and His Wife

Hi,

We are moving this weekend and would like some advice, its a 2 bedroom apartment with FTTC NBN available.
I play console gaming online semi frequently and my wife likes to stream netflix/foxtel a lot!
I have a few questions -

  1. would NBN25 be sufficient for our needs? Whenever i ask a service person for internet provider they say NBN50 but not sure they are just trying to upsell me
  2. In our current 2 bedroom apartment we have struggled to have internet range reach our bedroom from dining room where modem is placed. I have been looking at mesh solutions but do they require an existing modem on top of the mesh router thingys?
  3. Is there a adapter for normal power points that can turn it into an ethernet connection or is this the same as the mesh solution?

Thanks!

    1. Technically you can get away with NBN25, but I don't recommend trying to game and stream at the same time if your wife values high resolution. If the wife doesn't mind what resolution the stream is in as long as it is viewable, I recommend getting a router that allows you to prioritise your console over other devices.

    2. Yes, you will need to continue to use the NBN provided modem

    3. Yes, they are called Powerline Adapters

    1) NBN50 would be a lot more comfortable for you.
    2) You can get a single repeater unit for that size property without investing more into mesh. You don't need additional modem.
    3) Yes, Powerline adapters do this. But Power over Ethernet exists and powers things like Ubiquiti's Unifi mesh units if you wanted to go down that route.

      3) It's a 2 bedroom apartment, so he probably just wants to run a console over wired than wireless for latency reasons.

      • bingo :)

except the console and tv will be in area that isnt next to existing ethernet port, so trying to figure out best solution. and all these responses have been very helpful!

      2) there are cheap $100-200 mesh routers now.

    1. Try it out first and see if NBN25 is tolerable, then upgrade to NBN50 if you feel if the DL/UL speeds are not enough
    2. NBN FttC comes with an NBN owned and supplied RSP agnostic NCD, which gives you an Ethernet handoff, any router (or mesh-type router) with a WAN Ethernet port will suffice. For a small apartment you probably won't need the 3-pack Tenda MW or Google Wifi / Netgear Orbi kits, it's likely possible to cover your entire area with just one extra wireless access point (an old or spare router configured as a WAP — requires a little bit of network knowledge). However there are lots of noob-friendly mesh products that might suit you that are very easy to setup.
    3. It's called a powerline adapter or EoP adapter, plenty of those in the market for around $100 or so. It's always good to get one that supports AC passthrough.

    2) FTTC setup example. NBN connection device —-> Nest wifi 1 —-> Nest wifi 2.

If you stream netflix at 4k, then you need nbn50, if you stream at 720p then you should be fine with nbn25 and gaming at the same time.

  • Maybe if you played less games and your wife watched less Netflix you wouldn't have to create a thread to decide whether to spend an extra $10 a month to get 50/20 rather than 25/5.

    • lol very true

  • You might find this interesting for wifi set up
