Forgot to Activate Promotional EFTPOS Card

Had a $100 EFTPOS card from buying a TCL TV but forgot to activate the card. For some reason the card expiry is a year or so but you have to activate it within a few months so even though the card isn't expired you lose the money. Seems like this shit should be illegal even though it is my fault for forgetting to activate it. Wonder how much money they keep through these promotions from other people doing the same thing.

Just ring anyway and get it activated. It will probably be fine.

    You snooze, you looze.

I had the same issue with a 'Rewards Come True' giftcard and complained to Fair Trading. Apparently as it was a promotional gift card it doesn't fall under the rules for regular gift cards and they had no way to enforce anything.

You could complain anyway. It was only because so many people complained that they changed the laws for regular gift cards, so they may end up do it for promotional ones.

Will never give Rewards Come True my business when I do promos for work. What a scam.

    • Yeah that's the company that did the eftpos card for this promotion. Dodgy.

It's been like this for awhile unfortunately. Some gift cards have extended expiry dates. Which reminds me I have a restaurant one which obviously couldn't be used and for that matter not even sure they ate re- opening.

Gift cards are a fantastic idea for the sellers - apparently as many as 20% are never redeemed.

Agreed. "Someone else" should always be the responsible party.

    • Why does the card need to be activated at all though? The only reason for that part at all is to get a result like this. Don’t be a shill.

The card needs to be activated to prevent theft (in case the card was stolen it wouldn’t be useable).

        • But you don't need any proof of identity to activate it online so that's not true…

Certainly in some cases that applies. But if you read the original post the card has not yet passed its expiry date. What on earth is preventing the card from not being activated and who would defend such a shitty practice?

There is no reason for the activation period to expire before the card's expiry date other than hoping people forget so you don't need to pay up. 100% on OP's side with this one.
