  • That was quick, all gone.

  • Anyone notice element14 and RS stopped stocking the 2GB model?

    • World wide shortage due to this pandemic.

      • +1

Not sure of that. Hundreds of thousands of items there go out of stock. This one has been removed from all Pi pages and all item information removed from the entire site. Core has them, but at the much higher price. I think the margin at the low price was too low and they got out, bit like the how they don't stock the zero.

        • Maybe weird. I was able to get the Pi Zero at $10.50 a month ago, guess it was the last one.

    • It came back in stock recently, at higher price though. It's $67.73 now (it used to be $60).
1,945 available for next business day delivery

      • It looks like the 2GB at 1GB price announcement was ephemeral.

        • Maybe the price for distributors like element14 is still at 1GB level. They saw a chance to increase margins.

  • yep all gone, too slow

  • +3

Sold out, probably to ozbargainers who will never use it. Tis the OzB way.

have the pi1 pi2 pi3 and use it as servers, downloading machine, kodi player. excellent little device. however pi4 seems a little overprice compare to previous gen.

How do these compare with an NVidia Shield for media capabilities?

    • nvidia shield is much better to be honest

      • Did some research and it agrees with you. I think I'll just wait until I can get a good deal on a 2019 shield. My 2017 is brilliant, hard to go back to watching Plex with the Telstra TV. So much slower than the shield.

I have this - bought for 150 a few months ago.

Agree that the fan is a bit loud - but not hard or expensive to replace if required. In my use case, it's fine.

I'm running Home Assistant off it and it has been perfect.

I use mine to play old arcade games. Some of the classics such as ghouls and ghosts, pac land, punch out, choplifter to name a few

  • can any1 pls tell me what does this thing do?
I'm looking for a cheap laptop equivalent device to run animation port into tv.
My kids are using my work laptop for watching animation online.

I have a few Pi's and Arduino's. This is a nice kit, but at this price point, a second hand mini-PC on eBay is strong competition.

    • what model mini pc would be good match with this pi?

      • Depends what you want the Pi for.

        Look on eBay

        For example - You can get a Dell OptiPlex XE2 USDT Desktop | Pentium G3420 3.2GHz | 4GB RAM | 500GB HDD for $80.00 delivered.

        • Pentium G3420 3.2GHz

would it be better getting at least i5 from the dell 9020?

I think the pi4 is too expensive as well
the pricing is not as good as the previous pi model
and getting into range of the SFF pc

the kodi performance for 4k does not look that great right now as well..
and there are android boxes that can play 4k smoothly that is in the same price range as this pi

what do you use your pi for?

        • that ain't new stuff.
if looking for refurb easy under $140 for i5 processor.

    • +2

I guess that depends largely on use-case, if it will be running 24/7 consider power consumption.

  • Dumb question - but can you use this as a "normal" computer and run Windows, Office etc on it?

    • +2

      No.

      • It will run some desktop linux distros - Raspberry Pi OS, Ubuntu, and then you can run the LibreOffice suite

        • +1

Yeah but for someone asking for a "normal" computer that ain't it.

          • @Tacooo: Linux mint is pretty close to a Windows experience.

      • Windows 10 for arm has been successfully installed on this.
        Watch this space.

        • It'll be a long time before Windows 10 will be fully runnable on Pi. It struggled to run on a flagship chip. The cpu in this is weaker than the entry level budget phones.

Sure, microsoft is hoping to port their services over to arm with the duo line up, but it'll be a long time before it becomes pi-able.

        • MacOS 11 Big Sur will run natively on Pi very soon — watch 'that' space :)

    • Yes* (but with a little bit of twist). The CPU is Arm based so your apps need to be Arm based. There is Office for Windows Arm version I think.

It's best not to do that though. If you really want to run Windows, get a mini Windows PC if you want a small form factor. Intel NUC if money is not a major issue.

  • I want one of these, is this the way to go or should I just ebay the fan and usb power adapt er if I already have a spare micro usb?

    • +2

If you need everything ready now or soon, you could consider this one. If not, some reasons not to get this pack:

      • Not the official power supply.
      • Given that this one has a switch on their power supply, it means the case lacks power on/off/reset feature.
      • No fan control (though to be honest, most cheap cases don't have that anyway). Some don't even come with a fan.
      • Is this the newer revision of RPi 4GB with the USB-C/PD support fix (or the older one without)?
      • You have loads of microSD cards and already have micro-HDMMI cable.
      • You want the 8GB model.

      Most people get this because:

      • You get a power supply (with on/off switch), case, fan, cables, reader, sd card for $25 essentially.
      • MicroSD card is pre-loaded and ready to be use. (This will save time if you are not familiar with Pi).
      • Cheap cases are not as good (though most do expose GPIO, making it easier if you do use the GPIO) and take 6 weeks to arrive.
      • You are not going to waste a proper USB-PD cable ($29) as a power supply is already included (so USB-PD fix is a non-issue).

It's quite easy to miss out on some parts when you buy RPi 4. Can you get those parts for $25? It's going to be quite difficult I reckon.

      • Thanks! Is usbc not supplying enough power for attachments or something? Why does PD matter to a permanently plugged in device?

Is there info on the supplier of the PSU?

Honestly, 25 bucks for all that does seem good. I'm not planning to overclock it, I just want it to stream some script over the net to 5 discord servers.

        • +1

The USB-PD issue is that if a cable is USB-PD e-marked, that cable won't power RPi4 because Pi4 is missing a resistor to properly support USB-PD (with e-marking). Basically, a proper PD cable considers RPi 4 (initial hardware revision) NOT an USB-PD device.

It is a non-issue if you use most USB 2.0/USB-C/USB-C cables because e-marking is not required so makers obviously wouldn't put that chip in. Honestly, Apple actually cheap out on their USB-C/USB-C cable. It should have been USB 3/USB-PD, but they use the excuse of selling you Thunderbolt cables for high speed data.

Reality is that you run into this issue if you happened to use Apple, Samsung USB-C/USB-C/PD (or maybe some quality branded) cables. While it is possible, honestly, personally, I would reserve those cables for Apple, Samsung devices. Considered the official RPi 4 power adapter is cheaper than Apple and Samsung chargers, it is really a problem for "rich" people. Some people use the excuse of wanting to bring just one cable for Macbook Pro and RPi4 when on the move. Honestly, if you are on the move, just use the Macbook Pro.

Wouldn't worry too much about power supply. Official one is around $16 (but doesn't have the on/off switch). The one in the bundle deal has that on/off switch which is handy.

It's back in stock and I managed to claim one although it's at 96% now. SWEET. Been waiting on a deal like this for a month now, :D

I already have Pi-hole running on my no-longer-in-use 2010 gaming PC which has been repurposed as a Linux server but I'm sure it's not nearly as power efficient at this. Also, planning to use the Pi potentially as a game/web server.

    • +1

You'll find your idle power use will go from 60w down to around 5w.
If you're paying 28c a kwh that's around $147 a year to power the pc vs $12 for the Pi. Stats will change if you load up either with load.

      • Thanks for some theoretical numbers. I've only just started to look into this kind of thing recently and I thought I'd try to run a Linux server as a learning experience and because it was just sitting there collecting dust. The thing has i7-860 which I'm sure is even worse than the assumptions you've made to get your numbers.

  • Showing as $149.99

    • Regular price, lightning deal finished at 14:00

  • I think Game Shell is of a lot more fun, and looks nicer.

  • can this play minecraft?

  • Price has changed 134.99 2/Jul

  • It seems expensive if you add up all the other parts needed to build up a project.

If you plan to build a mini computer, it seems better buying a laptop or computer and save time putting them ngs together.

What project worth doing that would save you by building it using raspberry pi?
