Indeed OW seem doing misleading advertising.

  • It was legit, called up but none in stock, disappointing :(

  • -2

Heaven is great; you will be blissfully happy once you get there: but it doesn't exist.

    • It does at OW!

  • wish this was true, broke the screen on my laptop and will cost about $170 to replace :(

    • +1

Not really a "find". But, correct, not OP's fault.

  • I gave it a plus, it was a good find by the op and it's not their fault that OW has no stock.

  • It's been entertaining reading the responses, but I think it's time for a mod to put this "deal" to rest and mark it no stock.

  • +2

How can it be a legitimate price if they never planned to actually sell it? I might start a website selling Aston Martins for $6.95, legit price I swear, I just don't happen to have stock.

  • +1

Out of interest I thought I'd call Office Works (Fyshwick, ACT). The rep was apologetic saying it was a mis-print (wrong price) and they were out of stock for that model anyway.

    • damn, I was going to do this right now

  • +1

NO STOCK, Almost in all OW stores around Parramatta!!!

Good post, but lame trick by Office Works….

  • +1

OW computer system shows there is/was 1 in stock nation-wide, and 2 in the whole of Australia, but when the drop-down list is viewed it shows 1 at the Fulfilment Centre and 1 at Laverton Vic. Given that there was only 1 on the high level list, it was presumed to be in transit from one location to the other. So there is a theoretical chance it could be got (kinda like the film Chasing Amy).

Dicksmiths said it must be a joke even though they admitted that it was on the OW website. They said that management had the right to refuse to price match (even though it was in stock)-not by my reading of the DS rules but anyway…..

    • +1

I didnt know they can refuse it? They can reject on claims of no stock (according to their website). Ahh well :)

      • If there is stock, I don't think they can. DSE manager was not even willing to check the stock -told me to go buy it from OW then!

        • Yea I have had bad experience price matching with DSE. At the time I let it go, but I swore if they did it again to me I will take it further due to the fact they have a price match policy and I want to piss them off :P :D

  • +1

the one in laverton is damaged and after being fixed will be going to an auction centre. also, the fulfilment centre and laverton and the same place according to the guy in laverton.

  • +1

for those trying to price match dse

Dick Smith will match a competitor"s advertised price within 14 days of purchase if it complies with the conditions set out in the Price Matching Advertised Prices Policy.

    Price Matching Advertised Prices Policy

a.Item must be in stock in our store at time of purchase.
b.The Competitor must have a Retail Store.
c.Price comparisons must include all delivery charges and bonus offers.
    d.Product must be identical (e.g. same brand/model/colour).
e.Confirmation of competitor's advertised price is required. i.e. catalogue, newspaper advertising.
f.Competitor must be in stock (not available for back orders).
g.No bulk purchase, retail quantities only.
h.Excludes competitor's clearance lines, limited stock offers, price errors or Member/Club/Internet prices.
i.The competitor must be in the same metro or town area as the requested price match.

  • +2

i reckon it was supposed to be marked down to 999 and it was put in the system as 99.

  • checked with mandurah officeworks WA, sales lady confirmed its not a tyop but said that it is a promotion in eastern states and WA is not following. So they wont get any in stock:(

    • +3

      Nice use of irony there.

  • +1

    i just check… is a fake / wrong advertising. :(

  • +1

    most likely a typo

  • -3

ask officework already. in au, only have 1 stock

  • +1

    Officworks trolling ozbargainers

  • Was it someone here that rang Browns Plains store just after 8am?

I hit Aldi first up, then swung by Browns Plains OW and I heard the girl answering the phone taking down the model number while I was at the counter checking the same. lol

    • +1

I must be the one then, coz I called about 0810and the staff is a lady and seems like I was the first customer enquire about this at Browns Plains. LOL.

  • +1

When will OzBargainers realise, just because the product is on a website, and you can place an order there, doesn't mean the supplier will honor it? Almost all decent e-retailers have a clause in their Terms & Conditions that states that the retailer has a right to refuse the transaction at any time, usually to cover themselves in case of a typo, or a mistake like this. The ACCC will never side with the customers in this case because of that.

    • +2

I think people calling from all over Australia is reasonable assumption that they should remove the item OR change the pricing and display out of stock. It is misleading when they have had 12 hours or 6 hours from opening to change the display.

It fair enough to assume it was a mistake but they need to correct the mistake as well.

      • The mistake was noticed on Friday evening. I'm assuming their website is operated out of their head office, which means those who CAN do something about it, is probably out enjoying happy hour already by then, as is everybody else.

I'm guessing you enjoy heading back into office on a weekend to work, on a regular basis?

        • I think that my Boss would probably call me on Saturday/Sunday to fix up this issue.
That said, who said about going to work on a regular basis, it's just one day. AFAIK should take the guy more that one button press to remove the page

  • I just called up the Werribee store and the guy said they did have it on sale for that price for the last couple of days but it was sold out very quickly. I asked why they had it for so cheap, he said they wanted to get rid of old stock.

He also said only selected stores were allowed to sell it for that price.

  • +1

I checked a store in Melbourne and the guy said theres no stock in Australia and its a mistake.
He also knew I was checking from on line lol. Probably got rang 20 times over by Oz Bargainers

  • Just rang up the local store. The guy there said they put the price to $99 when they had one left in Australia.

I'll be writing to OfficeWorks about their responsibility to be able to meet reasonable demand, and reporting them to the ACCC.

    • Even if they had reasonable stock, you would have been hours too late to get one. You snooze, you lose

  • rang my local OW too (perth) and one girl said it was a mistake, and then another guy said that it was strange at there were none in stock in WA and no plans to get them in either.

  • Called up Blacktown - no stock there or anywhere else.

  • Not a legit bargain

  • +1

I know someone who works in OW corporate. It is 100% a mistake and he does not know where the "returns/out of stock" story is coming from. Probably store managers using that as an excuse rather than arguing.

This had already been proven to not be a legit deal hours before it was posted here.

    • Yeah same thing one of my mates said who works in the OW store in the south side of brisbane said, its a mistake.

  • Page not found. Looks like it was a mistake.

  • the page has been removed!! Thank you for all the excitement

  • Website link has been removed!

    EXPIRED!!!!!!!!!

  • What a waste of time. There is no stock in Australia whatsoever. Cannot order them either. Why did I even bother trying.

    • I feel like I have grown from this experience. Not all a waste

      • In what way?

        • horizontaly from sitting in front of the 'puter :) jks

  • Ya, why you advertise the item you don't have stoke? What is the point?

    • The point is that you get customers in the door (product was only available in store). "Sorry sir, we're sold out of that but we have this model for only $999".

It's commonly referred to as bait and switch (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bait-and-switch), and is illegal.

    • +3

very scary to have a STOKE.

      • big win for stoke last night

  • I was told the price was correct, but had sold out, and the offer finished a while ago, then they said, "Is it still on the website?" I told them it was, and that if it was still on the website in the morning, that I would be asking for an equivalent laptop at that price. They soon changed the site after that.

  • +1

Tell you what, I'll post a positive mark against this deal if at least ONE person can show proof of getting this deal.

  • There was prob only like 10 or less or something in whole of Aus, I called Glen Waverley OW and they said it was legit cept like all the other oz bargainers heard out of stock nation wide. Like the employee told me that 4 people ran up before and asked if it was in stock

  • Publicity stunt, this gives us a very bad after-taste for sure. They should have all stuck with the story of being a typo, so that we feel a little better.

  • Wonder if any of the people saying that the deal is legit and who 'managed' to purchase one at that price have any proof?

  • went into my local ow and they had the laptop on display and it was reduced from 900something to 800something coz backlight wasn't working or something. I asked about getting it for 99 and they said they didn't have any in stock.. and that i couldn't have the one on show for 99 coz it was a displayand not for sale, even tho it was reduced to sell..

  • +2

Hi all- Joined up just to post here and tell you that I have lodged a complaint with both OW and the ACCC apparently this is called 'bait advertising' http://www.accc.gov.au/content/index.phtml/itemId/815334 I will be calling the office of fair trade also…

    Edit:
If anyone has a copy of te original web ad or a receipt, before it said 'sold out' it would greatly help the cause…

    • If you're hoping to get a $99 notebook out of this, you're wasting your time.

      • -1

So I take it you never did?

        • Of course I didn't. The only thing the ACCC will do (if they find that OW is in breach) is fine them. They will not force them to sell you a laptop at $99.

        • +1

"The cause" being civil justice, this sort of thing just shouldn't happen

  • +1

Well I did it.. Office works is sending me a $99 Toshiba 'p750 2q'… I'll even post a photo of the invioce when it comes..

    • +2

I'll be eagerly awaiting it. If you do receive it, it's more likely Officeworks paying you off to avoid a fine from the ACCC. Anyway, it's going to cause havoc for Officeworks since everyone will be requesting a $99 laptop.

    • -1

You would also be on the OW blacklist where they will give you the cold shoulder when you need help. You got a pretty sweet deal but if in fact you dropped your complaint to get the $99 laptop, you got no integrity mate!

      • Agreed! 'fair trading' implies to all, not just Zapps personnel crusade. Because he gave up when bribed, everyone else is not getting a 'fair trade' (if that makes sense)

So Zappcola09, I will be complaining to ACCC about your 'restriction' of 'fair trade' and expecting a $99 laptop FROM YOU for all those that will now miss out on the deal. :)

        • +1

Not only did I get the offer, but so did 4 other people I know.
Tthere was no bribe and infact I bargained for a laptop I actually wanted, the offer was there for ozbargainers to jump on board (17/10/2011 - 08:03)
The ACCC were notified, infact I think you will find that all stores have been given an apology notification to hand out to customers asking for the deal.

I did not expect to get a laptop, but guess what.. I did, so whinge as much as you like.
but after all, isnt bargain hunting just opportunism anyway?

        • "all stores have been given an apology notification to hand out to customers asking for the deal" I guess not many would be happy about it lol

        • +1

This is what I got when I emailed them about it:

Thank you for your email in regards to the HP Pavilion DV6-6027TX Notebook. This notebook was advertised in error at $99.00 and we extend our apologises for any inconvenience this may have caused. Our Store Management team will be able to answer any questions you may have.
I hope I have been of assistance. If there is anything further I can do for you, please do not hesitate to contact me.

So please post a receipt and a picture of the laptop.

        • +1

@kheob, thats's exactly the response that I would have expected.

@Zappcola10, please post receipt/pics as you mentioned.

      • Yep. So much for:

"The cause" being civil justice, this sort of thing just shouldn't happen

        • +1

Typo.. It was meant to read: "The cause being civil justice for thineself, this sort of thing just shouldn't happen to me." LOL

Yes, please post the receipt here, and open the floodgates to all claiming a $99 laptop :|

OW is going to wish they just let it go DFT/ACCC, because after explaining their "write down process" (which they have used for years and across several products to remove ghost stock from their system), they wouldn't have been up for that big a fine (if any). It's quite likely the Toshiba side deal (if legitimate at all) was cut to avoid the protracted paper avalanche that such hearings usually require…

    • -1

      OW employee, just my thought.

    • Great job & well done! So how did this result happen. You contacted ACCC and then ….?

OW just advised you they would resolve the dispute by selling you a Toshiba at that price and implement correction notices etc. (thereby closing the enquiry of ACCC)???

Or you went back to local OW after lodging complaint with ACCC?

And well done OW for responding well to this.

[In fairness to OW doing the right thing by you maybe you should write "Settlement of ACCC issue" - across the middle of the receipt before scanning/photographing to post here.]

  • +1

    Heres the information.

    I work at OW.
And here's all the available information.

The unit is listed within our stock system as $99 as it is a QUIT line.
Meaning we are not and have not stocked in it quite a while.

    It's a "Ghost" item in a way.
The thing is, ONE and only ONE recently got added as available stock in our central distribution centre.

The website is automatic and probably just added it automatically without the department's who run the website realising.

The price is so low because it's QUIT stock and has been for so long.

    NOW. Heres the fun bit.
Right now there are 7 CUSTOMER ORDERS for these units accross our chain, yet only ONE left. (That's assuming it's physically there and not an inventory error).

So there is still a big shitstorm to come.

  • +1

    Continued…

So yes, it is not some advertising baiting conspiracy, just a major screw-up.
So far there are 7 generated orders for these, but no way to fulfill these orders.
(The managers who put the orders through at the time in-store are idiots).

Anyone who has placed an order in-store will end up being offered a refund as there is physically NO WAY for us to obtain them.

I suggest you try and bargain for an equvilent spec notebook.
Our managers are weak and give in very easy to pushy customers who complain.

    Theres my 2c.

    • That's sound like a good bargain for those seven people, if they manage to get a similar specced or even a little lower specced machine for $99 that's an amazing price. Even better would be if someone posted the receipt and it didn't have any details of this deal on it stating it was given as a replacement to the HP $99 error

  • +3

Still waiting for that receipt, Zapp.

    • +2

Hold on dude, he hasn't finished his Photoshop tutorials yet! Once the chapter on layers is complete we'll get the invoice copy lol ;)
