What Is This Key for?

Hi OzBs,

I recently bought a Honda Civic 2008 in a private transaction.

The car key fob also had this key:

For the life of me, I cannot figure out what is this for? It does not seem to work anywhere in the car. I doesn't open the door, doesn't open the boot, neither does it start the car. The private seller told me it was for the car.

Would you have any idea?

Thanks.

It's for programming a new immobilizer key, don't lose it, it's VERY expensive. Don't ever put it in your ignition, either.

i have the manual. its says its a learning key. when you have replaced a lost key the new key must be coded using the learning key before you can use the new key. this must be done by honda.
the learning key is only for models with an immobiliser.

    • Thank you

  • wow… i was wondering what that key was for! i found it recently in the bowl we put our keys in

      Poor Pam,
      bless her

  • A quick question - If I want to get a spare key done fore my car, can I get it done from any car key cutter, using existing key as template. Or will I need to go to someone who takes my red key and programme the spare using the red key.

    • New key will need to be programmed to the vehicle. Usually, a red key is used to program a new key to the vehicle. You can either buy a new key from the dealer and get it cut somewhere and take it back to the dealer for programming, or just take it to an automotive locksmith and have it all done at the same place. (or, if you have a working key, you can just get one of those shoe repair places to "clone" the key.)

That being said, you mentioned that they red key doesn't operate anything. Does it even look the same as the regular key? (as in the cuts on the key, not the head of it) The programming key should work at least on the drivers door and in the ignition. If it doesn't work, it's possibly not for that vehicle.

      • Thanks.

Yeah, the key does not work on the driver door. Perhaps someone handed me the wrong red key.

I've seen you've mentioned a few times that the key doesn't work in other locks? In older cars this can be because the main key is constantly used for opening the doors, boot and ignition which wears out the key and the locks, then one day you go to use your spare (or in this case your programming) key and they won't work because the key is like brand new and the lock is old and worn.

So it may be the correct key, but is like new and won't match the 12yo locks.
