HELP - Portable Hard Disk

Since my less than 1 year old seagate decided to stop working yesterday while I need one for travelling in less than a week, does anyone know if there is currently a good deal on portable hdd (2.5", without the power cable)? Capacity: 1 TB or more.

Much prefer to buy over the counter as I don't think I have enough time for delivery (risk of delay, etc).

Cheers all.

PS: I'm in vic.

  • Officeworks seem to have them (WD) for $98 and Seagate for $99. I don't know of any specials at the moment. Can you crack the case open and swap out the drive? It might be cheaper (you might be pushing it trying to find a cheaper notebook 1TB HDD though!). Also, don't forget to send off the bad drive for warranty exchange, I've seen too many people throw out a "bad" drive into the trash instead of mailing them off for replacement. http://www.seagate.com/www/en-au/support/warranty_%26_return…

    • Cheers. I actually almost threw away the drive like u said. Then I remembered that I kept original box and receipt from officeworks and found it has 5 years warranty!

But I'm kinda disappointed when I asked officeworks that they wont do replacement, and I need to deal directly with Seagate. Seagate's "contact us" page for au is blank! No phone number to dial, no address. How assuring, just like their drives. Hopefully there wont be any drama with the claim though.

I tried opening up to see the connection, and it is one of those drive with weird connectors, so I don't think it can be swapped.

      • +1

It's reasonably painless, just put your serial number from the drive into the search box at the bottom left of the page and it will check to see if it is still under warranty (3-5 years for Seagate products I thought). If it passes the check it will let you request an RMA authorisation for return, no proof of purchase or anything else required. Then print out the RMA number and return label and take it to the post office and send just the drive off to Singapore (I think it costs about $10 and I get it registered). In a few weeks they will send you a factory re-manufactured replacement drive with the remainder of your original warranty. The hard part I found was dealing with portable drives; the enclosures don't always have a serial number or show up on the system. I had one of these previously and had to crack it open and put in the serial number of the drive, it was happy with that. When the new drive came back I was able to rebuild the enclosure.

  • Normally best to check HN, DSE and OW. Every now and then they have a really good deal but if you're in a hurry for something you can buy over the counter then you may not necessarily get the best price around.

Here are DSE and OW's portable hdd prices in ascending order:

    http://www.officeworks.com.au/retail/b2c/display/%28cpgsize=…

    http://dicksmith.com.au/dsau/navigation/navigation_results.j…

You might need to reselct the sort order on the OW site as it doesn't seem to maintain over the url

    • Cheers mate. at first I was thinking more like smaller comp shops like msy, centrecom, lappyking, etc. But don't know which of them has cheaper price. Need to do some comparison with the big guys too.

Keep the suggestions coming guys. Thanks!

      • Don't wait too long… you could have have got it delivered. LOL
