Acer Predator Triton 300 Laptop i7-9750H/16GB/256GB SSD+1 TB HDD/ 2060 $1994 @ Harvey Norman

140

Found this deal at Hardly Normal. I would love to know of anything better at similar price point. I think Asus TUF models are not good, so no recommendations there.

I am unsure on the refresh rate of the screen. I think it may be 60hz, but if someone can confirm with certainty that would be great.

Currently using a tuf laptop… it's pretty good imo?

      The Intel TUFs are ok.

But they deliberately nerfed the AMD versions and everyone's mad about it.

      • I have an AMD Tuf and it was budget and a waste of an investment. Bad thermals, RGB keyboard issues, bios difficulty. Just drama.
But, this is a base model with the 1050.

Yup, honestly not sure why anyone negged my comment.

You know from owning one, the manufacturer seemingly deliberately released a subpar series with the new Ryzen CPUs. They removed heating grills, smaller heatsinks, put paper internally for airflow control.

And afaik you can't find more than a 1660/2060 GPU paired with them despite better thermals, lower power draw and better multitasking.

It reeks of Intel meddling. I'm finally in the market for a new laptop and am absolutely disgusted by how AMD is being treated as a low tier option.

Edit: no I think this is a rebadged Nitro 5. It's not a good laptop, gets way too hot - the cooling isn't up to dealing with a 2060 + i7, and the screen is probably 60hz. The TUF is better probably in every way besides RGB

    • I always thought Predator was the premium line of products and TUF was the more budget

It's supposed to be, but the Triton 300 is their 'budget' Predator, and as far as I can tell looks about the same as the Nitro 5. The Helios 300 and Triton 500 are much better and it looks like Acer are just trying to pimp the Predator brand to sell these. The only review I can find agree's. This should be priced like a Nitro, not a Predator Triton. Last years Triton 500 and Helios 300 were available for the same price of this and had much better cooling and screens

It gets hot with just a 1650, a 2060 won't be able to run well

      • Predator & ROG are Acer & Asus' enthusiast-level products.
TUF branding is for mid-range up to just below enthusiast.
Not sure what Acer's TUF equivalent line is called.

    • I looked at Jarrod Tech and when properly undervolted, which is something many would do, it was quite good with thermals

      • He hasn't reviewed this laptop. Lots of laptops with similar names, but not this one

I think a tuf would be better in every way except for the graphics and maybe the average screen.

Both would have cooling issues, just one is a generation newer.

  • Depending on what you're willing to give up, you should be able to get a 4800H and 144Hz monitor in this price range with otherwise similar specs, although stock may be an issue.

$2099 gets you something along those lines, so I'd imagine a sale price would be more competitive, but stock is limited due to the sheer popularity (and value in Zen 2 mobile versus what Intel is currently producing).

    • Ryzen R7-4800H better than Intel i7-9750H?

      • +5

Completely and entirely. Better single core, better multicore (more cores) and substantially better battery life.

10th gen as well. Intel can't compete in this power envelope with their 14nm process. Their U series uses Intel 10nm, but even then it's behind AMD with their use of TSMC 7nm.

        • I see. I'm a noob. I'll start googling.

What your thoughts on this? its $1,949, yes its not GTX2060
If it's $1700 would that be a fair price?

          • @yellowfever: 60Hz screen and 1660Ti aren't worth the downgrade.

You cut off your access to high refresh rate gaming (which is great) and DLSS to fuel better image quality and frame rates.

            • @jasswolf: for me the laptop screen hz isn't a big factor, as I would hook it up to a external monitor. I'm looking at laptops for versatility & travelling, but can also plonk it on my home desk and play games from time to time..

  • The screen is probably 144hz. Due to the size and thickness, It can get hot when playing 1080p games. If you are looking for light and portable gaming laptop, it's not that bad idea. But makesure understand your game before buying any gaming computers.

  • I have the 2017 Helios 300 with similar specs other than the 2060. Helios supports 144Hz via HDMI to an external monitor and features expandable HDD/RAM. Also, the screen can be upgraded to 144Hz aftermarket, if you're quite tech savvy. Overall solid build quality and was as expected. Although not the same model, I paid ~A$1,400(duties included) when new for the Helios 300, imported via Amazon US.

To give potential buyers an idea of the cost effectiveness of this one.

Edit: Plays GTA V and RDR2 fine with recommended settings, for example. But does become burning hot with very loud cooling fans under load.

    HP Omen so much better

  • The RTX 2060 is about 5-10% slower than a GTX 1080 equal in some games and CPU benchmarks and applications but the temps on the RTX 2060 is about 5-10 degrees Celsius cooler in most games and CPU benchmarks and applications.

Honestly they are very close in performance but the RTX feature makes it much more future proof as it performs better than the GTX 1080 with Ray Tracing on.

      laptop rtx 2060 = desktop gtx 1660

      desktop rtx 2060 = laptop rtx 2080 super max-q

    • +1

We shouldn't really be comparing temps between GPUs, because there's all the different AIBs and cooler designs that it can be unfair. It's like saying an RTX 2070 Super runs at 80c and an RX 5700 XT runs at 65c, you're comparing different coolers.

      • So what if it is unfair that's the point.

Some people need the cooler option because their environment might be warmer.

It's good if the temps are lower or the cooler design is better people want this and want to know this which is why it was brought up.

But I get what you are saying if the same design was applied to all gpus then they could possibly all have the same temperatures.

  • This is good laptop for video editing and graphic design as well. Good price.
