  • Can you create private servers for Q2 multiplayer? We used to play Q2 at work more about 15 years ago running on small windows. Would be nice to set up a private server to go back to the old days… rail gun ftw.

    • +1

If it has console access then why not? And if you do get a game going, PLEASE INVITE ME!!

      • Hmm thanks, might be worth looking into once the Quakecon is over and we get the game! I've been frantically searching for this one map which was always the finisher but seems some old hosting servers are no longer in operation :( the map had only rockets and railguns and it was low grav, we set the match to end at 50 kills, was a killfest. Of course you will be invited should it happen :)

        • You might be thinking of Quake3 "The longest yard" — the level from the demo

          • +1

@Agret: Nah they had that map for Q2 as well, it wasn't low grav, they had those launcher things. I found out the map name I was thinking of actually, it was called "Pong". Was a very large room, high ceilings (probably 100ft at least), shaped like a horizontal hourglass. You spawned and picked up a railgun or rocket launcher lying around (plentiful) and in the centre was a BFG.

So if you jumped it was easy to rocket at running ground targets but since it was low grav you were almost a sitting duck for railgun snipers.

It was probably part of some mod pack but honestly was always the best way to finish off a lan match especially when you had 2 or 3 people who were almost at 50.

            • @snackerjoe: You ever try Lithium mod? Was fully server side and let you tweak basically every variable on the fly, can totally change how the weapons function

              http://quake2.lithium.com/

              • @Agret: No I haven't but I'll look into it, thanks.

            • @snackerjoe: Google gave me this!
              https://www.andrewbullock.net/quake2/q2files/qpong/maps/
Check out some of them, but they may be related to the qpong mod

              • @XeSSiV: Thanks so much for looking, but I tried them and they don't seem to be the one :( the search goes on…

              • @XeSSiV: This is the closest I could find to the original Pong, I suspect it might have been a CTF map (makes sense because of the map layout and there was also ledges on opposite ends on the walls). We never played it as CTF though, it was always deathmatch. Description matches what we played, low grav with RL and railgun.

                http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:xy26yRw…

              • @XeSSiV: Actually, that planetquake cache link still has a working download of wtfctf2.exe (which I did scan after downloading!!!) and it unzips the maps and textures. I'm pretty damn sure this has the same Pong map I was talking about but I can only get one of the maps to load (plus the map names are different to what I remember, they're just generic ones here) because of missing textures, I have no idea how to fix it up :(

Edit: I had a look at the wtfctf6a.bsp file in a text editor and it does refer to "Pong" and gravity settings. Pretty sure this is the map.

              • @XeSSiV: I finally got it to load! You have to first set the game to ctf by entering "set game ctf" into the console (it's in the CTF_readme.txt) then you can load the ctf maps that I found. Pong is in wtfctf6a but the one I used to play was for deathmatch, so not sure how it was edited that way.

                • @snackerjoe: make a copy of that map, rename it to pong.bsp, and put it into your baseq2\maps folder - that should be all you need to do to play in deathmatch (if memory serves me correctly). Then if it fails it'll tell you it's missing any textures - do the same with the texture files it tells you about. Let me know how you go :)

                  • @XeSSiV: Actually I already put all the downloaded maps in baseq2\maps. I tried making a copy of the Pong map and renaming it to pong.bsp but it won't load as a deathmatch because of missing textures, and I can't find any filename matching the missing texture anywhere in the Quake2 folders (actually there are no .wal files anywhere apart from the downloaded ones).

I can load the renamed Pong map but only if I set the game to ctf first.

  • Bethesda as in, Bethesda was a pool in Jerusalem known from the New Testament story of Jesus miraculously healing a paralysed man.

  • I just logged into Bethesda launcher & doesn't appear to have given me access to any of these Quake titles. No mention of it in the Store tab either.

Edit: Have to click the >>> at the top of the games listing to find Quake, it's in there :) figures they would fill the side menu icons with games I don't even own and hide the ones I do own in the overflow.

  • +3

Add and remove games on the left bar by clicking on the game and then clicking the heart icon (favourties)

dunno why they would add random games that you don't own there.

You can add Q2/Q3 that way quickly see when it will be available

    • THANK YOU!

I was wondering how to do this!

I should add that games are shown with the last game added on the top so add in reverse order of what you want it to be. And the games one doesn't want in the side bar, just go in and un-heart them.

… huh, didn't realise I had both Daggerfall and Morrowind already.

      • you can also drag and drop order when you hover over them and see the 3 dots left of the icons.

  • +1

Is this over? Just logged into the launcher. The games show a buy now button for me

Edit: Ok read the Edit in the OP: Edit - Quake 2 & 3 claim windows are yet to be decided, probably Thursday morning in Australia
Can confirm I do see Quake 1 button as "Install"

  • Seems unplayable in a tiny window. Any way to make it bigger?

    • +1

Search back in this thread. There’s a patch to enable 1080p. This one.

  • Do you have to (aka 'must') install the games to claim them? I’m trying to claim this game for my teen nephew but he doesn’t have a pc (he’s getting a new one next Friday) and I don’t really know what to do.

How do you scroll down? The bar for it is incredibly thin and I cannot click it and scroll-have tried multiple times and just can’t do it (this is on the launcher thing someone else posted about earlier).

    • I couldn't claim it :(

    • Don't think it is mandatory to have the games installed to claim them, they should just sit in your library (as long as you met the conditions to get the games).

If you can't scroll down for some reason, try choosing "My Library" from the top of the list (there is a drop down that defaults to "All").

    • +3

Logging in to the launcher should be enough. Check here to see if it's been added. I guess it's a bit late now if it hasn't worked, but it sounds like you've done it. You don't need to install it.

      • +1

I logged into the website during QuakeCon then realised I needed the launcher.

I only just logged into the launcher and I can see Quake added to my library, so I guess it's still fine to log into the launcher now to claim the game.

      • That page shows as no transactions for me, have to go to this one to see it - https://bethesda.net/en/account/transaction-history/product-…

  • Do you need to install the games by any specific dates (ie. like some free Steam games which self-destruct after some period of times)?

    • Nah just login to the launcher. Free Steam games that self destruct are "free weekend" / "free week" / "public beta", the ones that you claim to your account stay forever and you don't have to install them you just press the install button and then cancel the install prompt and it will be tied to your account. You can even do it from your phones browser.

    Quake 2 available “Tuesday”.

  • so is it too late to claim Quake? I've just installed the launcher and Q1 is coming up as BUY button

    • +2

Seems like it. Had to have the launcher open during Quakecon for Q1. You can still get Q2 and Q3 later this week, hopefully.

  • +4

Quake 2 is available now :) login to the launcher and then check https://bethesda.net/en/account/transaction-history/product-… to confirm you've got it

    • Still coming up with a price for me

      • You will need to close your Bethesda.net Launcher and then load it up again, log in again and it will work.

Quake II has arrived. Again being an old game like Quake I. There are no widescreen resolutions. With 1600x1200 resolution being the highest.

Again you'll have to install a patch to add widescreen resolutions and updated default controlls to the game settings. One I found is Yamagi Quake II for Windows. Not sure if there are any others.

To install. Download the latest precompiled binaries and extract the all files to the Quake II install folder, overwriting the existing files. On first run, goto video and set video resolution to monitors native resolution then apply changes to set game to full screen.

    • Looks like we were on this at the same time!
You need to have the soundtrack with it.
It's so much better with the music.

      • +2

Thanks. Don't own the quake 2 CD so googled and found the soundtrack files here to download.

Installed the files to Quake II\baseq2\music

  • Yep Quake 2 is there.
Downloaded Yamagi so I can have it in 1920x1080 and soundtrack.
Ripped my Quake 2 CD Audio with foobar2000 to ogg and copied to baseq2/music directory.
All running fine in full screen with the classic tunes!!!
    The best way to play.

    Quake 2 claimed… Quake 3 next week :)

    • I guess I claimed it too, by installing it. It doesn't have a "claim/buy for $0" button like Epic Games or Humble Bundle which was weird for me.

  • Has the Free Quake 2 finished? its showing up with a price for me today and it dont think its been 72hrs yet?

    • Mirage, I had to log out of the launcher and then log in again, before Q2 would show as free.

  • Quake 3 not up yet?

  • Just installing Quake 3 Arena now. :)

  • +6

    Quake 3 downloaded and installed!
This is another game where you need a patch for widescreen and higher resolutions.
ioquake3 works with this release and I can play in 1920x1080 no worries.
I also recommend HiRes Quake3 Replacement Texture Pak and High Quality Quake 3 for updated visuals.

With the available release of ioquake3 it is buggy and some levels drop frames like crazy.
The homepage for ioquake3 suggests using the latest test build but these have been removed from the homepage as the author states these were compromised and you need to build from source yourself.

I built my own from source and it works fine!

These are the instructions I used to build from source:
    http://wiki.ioquake3.org/Building_ioquake3_on_Windows_-_cygw…

Nah no need for patch for widescreen

For Quake 3 Arena purchased via store media, the correct config file should be:
      C:\Program Files\Quake 3 Arena\baseq3\q3config.cfg (for Quake 3 Arena)

Edit q3config.cfg (preferably with textpad) and edit these lines:

      seta r_mode "x"
      Set this to -1

      seta r_customwidth "xxxx"
      seta r_customheight "xxx"
Set this to your favorite widescreen resolution.

      seta cg_fov "90"
Set this according to your preference

Quake 3 Arena now… got it.

    • +1

Now let me know if you find a playable server that isn't just bots.

  • Missed out on Q2 sigh

  • is or was Quake 1 free?

    • Yes Quake 1 was free. You missed it.

    • Quake 1 was first freebie, then Quake 2, now Quake 3.

      • Absolutely devastated. Q1 is my fave!

Oh well, got 2 and 3…

  • Dammit missed Quake 3.
