AussieBroadband Price Rise

Sup All

Since Aussie Broadband is hiking the pricing up for plans by $10 who will be staying or looking for better deals ?

There are 3 components:

  • From today, 3 August 2020, we will start selling all our residential and business 100Mbps plans at an extra $10 per month and our seniors unlimited plan at an extra $6 per month
  • Throughout September, we will contact existing customers on these plans to give them 60 days’ notice of the price rise
  • Also throughout September, we are contacting customers on legacy plans, to let them know that we are retiring their plan and have matched them to an existing plan that we think will suit them best. Again, we will give 60 days’ notice of any changes.

If your plan is affected, you can accept our recommended replacement plan, or can easily jump into MyAussie/call our team to choose a different plan.

Not everyone on legacy plans will see a price rise. Some will get better bang for their buck, or their price will stay the same. Some of the legacy plans that we are retiring have been grandfathered for more than 2 years.

In the spirit of no bullshit, you can also go to another provider – although of course we sincerely hope that our focus on quality customer service and network operations convinces you to stay. If you’re on one of our old modem pay-off contracts, we will waive any exit fee if you wish to leave us.

      • How do you rate TPG so far? Any dropouts or really slow peak time speeds?

        • +1

TPG I thought were pretty good? I'm with Future which uses AAPT a TPG company. Always full speed and not drop outs… Be interested to see the comparison

        • +2

I run multiple servers and it runs perfectly and I get great peak time speeds.

Its highly likely that Aussie Broadband would have slightly better peak time speeds, but to me its not noticeable, who is going to notice 90mbit vs 95mbit at 7pm? Not me.

          • @samfisher5986: Thanks for your review. I'd be happy to move to TPG for $10 more than I'm paying now and keep the 100/40, as its good enough for me.

            I'll check out TPG tonight.

            Cheers.

I'm moving to Future Broadband due to this price hike, however AussieBB have no shame offering brand new offers of $10 for 6 months just 2-3 days ago while sticking existing customers major price rise between $10-$25 per month extra, those on 500GB plan have to pay $85 now to $105, sorry $25 is too much of a price hike

  • Disappointing that the price is going up but I've been with ABB for over a year now and really happy with them, so no plans to move. I share the internet with 3 others so it's $2.50 more per month each, not that big a deal IMO. Plus my partner and I are now WFH full-time (and both use VPNs all day to do our work), and one housemate is doing Uni online, so I'd rather stick with an ISP I know is reliable, than change to a potentially worse service for the sake of saving a few dollars per month.

I wouldn't be surprised if other ISPs follow suit soon anyway, especially now if more people start moving to them in response to this.

    • In context the price rise is probably a side order at McD's.

My ABB 100/40 500gb plan is going up from $80 to $95 and the upload speed is halving to 20mbps! How can they justify giving me crappier speeds with an 18.75% increase in price? One or the other I'd cop, but not both. Looking for alternatives now.

Here is the story from ABB about price increase.

      https://www.itwire.com/telecoms-and-nbn/aussie-broadband-off…

But in this story, OP paid $99 and can keep its 100/40 if he pays an extra $10 to $109

        Thanks for that article.

At this point in Australia's recession though they shouldn't be gouging customers to increase their profit as the article states. I'd like to see if they are actually losing money, more like not making money. Since ABB are looking to get listed on the ASX they are looking to increase their revenue to increase their stock price.

"NBN Co charges us a different wholesale price on the 100/20 plan to what it offers on the 100/40 plan, which is why we can offer to adjust your upload speed down and have the plan remain at the same price."
Quoted from the article. My price increased from $80 to $95 despite my upload speed going down. That is clearly not true.

Personally, I'm more annoyed that I have to pay more for a product that is worse than what I was paying 18% less for. Sure, increase the price, but don't also reduce the service to worse than what I had at the same time. One or the other.

I'll be talking to support at ABB and I'll send them the article you quoted and see if they want to reduce my upload but keep the price the same.

        Cheers.

      • Just talked to ABB via online chat, they won't do anything, gotta go to the 100/20 plan for $95. Best I could get was a 1 month deferral on price change.

        • Your current NBN 100Mbps/20Mbps Unlimited ($89.00) at $89.00 will increase to $99.00.

Why the extra $6? I'm okay with the price increase, they're top notch and well worth it.

          • @Hybroid: No, I'm on the 100/40 500GB for $80. Upload speed is more important to me than quantity of data. Thats a price increase of 18.75% for half the upload speed I used to get.

        • I just moved over to Future Broadband from ABB (I was on the 100/40/500GB for $85 too. $95 for the same limit but half the upload speed was just too unacceptable to me)

With FBB I really like the idea of the databank. Gives you a bit of a buffer to see if you need to upgrade or downgrade your plan.

Used a referral code to reduce the setup fee from $55 to $20. But the setup fee kinda pays for itself anyway with a signup bonus of 2TB in the databank - you can be on a lower plan for a while and if you notice that bank getting too low after a few months you could upgrade the plan, fill up the bank, then pop back down to the lower plan.

          100/40 250 GB for $79pm

But after the first month you can pre-pay for 3 months with a 4% discount or 6 months with an 8% discount

So $72.68pm for the same 100/40 connection that I was on with ABB. Win.

          • +3

@jimwyze: I've just done the same. I was on the $80 100/40 500GB plan. The new plan was $105. $25 increase per month (more than 30% increase) for the same thing. Even dropping to 20 up was $15 more per month.

Famous ABB last words … we won't ever offer unlimited downloads. We won't ever force people to change plans.

There's a lot of ABB sympathisers over on Whirlpool. They are turning into Telstra in terms of retention, no offers for existing customers (prepaid discounts, loyalty plans). Seems to be catering for high bandwidth users and slugging everyone. I'm assuming they are now targeting the masses who want average plans and probably aren't technical (and don't mind paying a premium) that dont want to deal with Telstra's BS - massive marketing campaign. They also appear to cater for those that download half the internet - unlimited plans.

So we've (the taxpayer) paid to build a rubbish NBN. Internet fees are constantly increasing. Now we are (possibly) being expected to foot the bill for NBN providers to run their own cables behind the scenes to avoid paying some of the fees pushed onto them by Turnbull's mess.

Hopefully FBB turn out to be something similar to ABB before they decided to chase large profits.

  • Seems like a silly move to me. Even if they are loosing money on these plans, its going to cost more to get new customers. I'm no business major but looking at the P&L in the prospectus in very simple terms, my math could be way off with a few brews under the belt, and I'm happy to be corrected :D

    FY19 to 20
90mil increase in revenue, or about 90k new customers at approx average $1000 anual revenue each, costing 11mil in marketing. Or $122 each.

    Projected FY20 to 21
150mil increase in revenue, or about 150k new customers at approx average $1000 anual revenue each, costing 23mil in marketing, Or $153 each.

Another interesting thing from P&L is that, even though they had a 90% increase in revenue from FY19 to FY20, the networking costs only increased 80%. For FY21 they are forecasting an 80% increase in revenue, and a 75% increase in networking costs. So the increase in costs seem to be more in running the business, not the product.

Again, take my rambling with much salt.

I don't fully understand how it all works, but I've seen that sometimes they don't accept connecting people to certain POI, ie they are full and it would reduce the quality for everyone adding new customer.
I think they'd be happy for people to move to a different provider if they know they can fill up that spot with a full paying (non-legacy) new customer.
I think their end-game is building backhaul and renting it out to other companies, they also already provide a service for ISPs to use.

Anyways Ozbargainers will find better deals. Also just signed my mum up to Future Broadband FTTP (Don't forget referral system for them) - New connection was ready the next day in the morning, all went smooth!

  • Merged from Aussie Broadband forced plan change

I've been Aussie BB's biggest advocate but I received an email that they're enforcing a change in our plan to a more expensive and slower plan.

'We wish to advise that the Legacy Migration plan change, from NBN 100Mbps/40Mbps 700GB ($91.00) to NBN 100Mbps/20Mbps Unlimited ($99.00), has been successfully applied to your account.'

Upspeed is a big deal imo, if someone in your household is uploading a gallery to facebook it completely chokes everyone else out.

Is there anyone out there providing 100/40 that's reasonably priced around that $90 mark?

just like i predicted, the IPO is just a bad Ponzi scheme from all the big boys to jack the price up, then the stocks are being sold to the mum and dad through financial advisers and superannuation, and later soon will declared bankruptcy

      oh… remember Dick Smith?

The youngins probably never have heard of one.tel

          • @[Deactivated]: (fropanity) one.tel

I had an account with those (fropanity) and they went belly up and I had 8 months left on my contract. There was no way to contact them and I was on direct debit. Service was cut off, was unable to make or receive calls or anything, but the payments kept coming out each month. Bank couldn't contact them or halt the charges. It went on for about 3 or 4 months before the charges stopped being taken from my account. That was well before the days of the lack of robust consumer laws and the likes of the ACCC.

The other one that the girlfriend at the time got stung with was "Froggy Internet…" That's an obscure Ponzi scheme for all the kids playing at home…

      • They announced these changes before the ASX announced an ABB IPO

    • Hope they don't change the gigabit plan, unless it's going to be cheaper. Aussie Broadband already isn't the cheapest gigabit provider anymore.

    • +6

Time to change providers! Too expensive to stay with ABB

    • -1

Shouldn't be paying more than $80 for 100/20.

    • I changed from Aussie BB to Superloop. It's cheaper and I feel the speeds are just as reliable as Aussie.

      • I've always been on Superloop since they bought the hardline Skymesh customers. Still on $89 100/40 unlimited. Great service and rarely any issues.

    • +4

      Just leave them.

They talk a lot about 'Mates' in their marking material, but mates don't let mates drop their upload speeds.

    • +1

i also switched out from ABB due to pricing, to Launtel

their customer service is top notch, their 100/40 play is calculated daily 3.25 per day so for avg 30 days that's about 97.5.

i got it because sometimes i will not be home, and they have the ability to pause the service, i.e. if i pause it around 11.55pm on a sunday evening, i get disconnected but if i unpause say thursday around 6pm when i get home, i am not charged for the monday, tuesday and wednesday.

100/20 is about 87 at launtel and 89.95 at superloops

I moved to Future Broadband after receiving an email from ABB about moving to a more expensive but slower upload plan.

1000GB 100/40M is $89 and comes with Data banking (Rolling over unused data up to 5000GB)

      • +1

This, use Aussie app to review your past months usage.

        plus pre-pay 6 months for 8% off.

Use referral code for $35 credit and extra databank

      • $55 setup

    • Call up Mate Communicate - They have a secret option of going on 100/40 for $89. Last verified as of July 2020, not sure
if they offer it anymore though. I'm on their 100/20 $79 plan.

    • I went the other way and went up to 250/20 (well, up on download, down on upload)

      • It is 25Mbps upload. NBN should increase the upload to at least 40Mbps but NBN disagree.

    • Got the same email. Moved to Superloop yesterday. Got the 6 month promotion as well. Paying 70 for the same 100/40 plan.

      • Hey mate, Could you share the promotion details?

        • I think somebody just posted it on ozbargain today. Whistleout15for6 promo code

  • I just got slapped with a $15 increase and half upload. Ima change to Future BB. Where do I find the referrals?

  • Our household is thinking of switching from Aussie Broadband because of the phone service.

My parents can't call their home country of Latvia at all. In addition, they can't use the answering service as it doesn't seem to work - for them at least.

My friend says that Aussie Broadband subcontracts their phone service. If so, they should consider a different subcontractor.

None of this used to be a problem pre-NBN, when we had Optus cable broadband/phone and a Telstra landline, both of which could make calls to Latvia, and had answering services that were easy to operate.

I love Aussie's broadband service and help line. But the phone situation is untenable, and we don't want to use two different services. What should we do?

  • Aussie broadband is rubbish, internet drops every time desktop switched off. Speed slower than adsl, I was using their 12/1 opticomm, cannot even launch speed test
