Washing Machine Issues

Have had my washing machine just over 7 years yesterday on its last high spin it went off with a bang.
It still works but makes a hell of a noise on the last high spin.
Wife said last time she took out the washing out of it these black stuff came out, i looked and feels like metal from somwhere.

Any idea what could be wrong with it? As its just over 7 yrs old not be no point in getting someone to look at it as be wasted money.

  • My washing machine's seal rings popped out last month and I only had my machine for around 3 years.

I'd just buy a new one. That's probably what the washing machine repairman will tell you.

  • Any idea what could be wrong with it?

I suspect that the black stuff came out. Did you try putting it back in?

More seriously, if is still works but just makes a lot of noise, it's probably something mechanical rather than electrical. Can you take a picture of the black stuff, or a video of the machine running so we can hear the noise?

    • How do you ad a vid on here?

    • They black stuff was like cuttings from a metal using a saw or the like.

It sounds like the bearings are collapsing and the grease is leaking past the seals.

        • So probably not work fixing then being its just over 7 yrs old or is it cheap or possible to fix. I asume that it cost to much to fix by time you pay labour and parts.

@bwatt72: I would walk away unless its a really expensive machine (>$2000)

            • @brad1-8tsi: Cant remember about mid 700 or 800 would need to find some invoice to see what was paid.

I messaged a few local repair guys through facebook to see what they said, and all said but new as well. Both said dfifferent things wrong with it but that's without looking.

One said go for lg machine and other bosch.

Looking these up lg seems lower down the list on good feedback and from best to worse where as bosch comes up second.

I was told lg comes with 10 yr warranty which sounds good.
Price range for me would be about mid $700 or less or even better a model thats a lot more but on a very good deal or price.

              • @bwatt72: You'll get a made in Thailand Bosch for that. Not a German one.

                they aren't a bad machine.

Source: I bought a Thai Bosch about 7 years back to replace a very expensive Maytag that turned out to be a POS. It's still going strong (according to my kids).

My GF also has a Thai Bosch - it's about the same age. Goes well.

                • @brad1-8tsi: What model is yours obviously being 7 yrs old probably different model now.
. I see the 7.5kg one has tons of reviews and many are great but the 8kg one not as much wonder why as 8kg is bigger and faster rpm.
Is the door area small i sure i read its small and people was not happy. But then depends what they had before.

                  • @bwatt72: I can't remember. The ex-wife kept the house and all the contents when we split in 2016. I walked out with my clothes, my car, MTB, tools, a shitload of money and a sense of optimism.

For the past 2 years I've been using a 7kg LG that I'm minding for a friend. I believe it's about 6 years old. It works fine.

              • @bwatt72: Mine is LG and after 3yr it is broke. The 10yr warranty is the inverter. The Bearing is not included and if you ring them they say not cover and charge around 500 (including parts to repair).

It is ridiculous to have a machine break in 3 years. Its whether you want to fight via Australia consumer law…

  • Always wanted to do the brick thing myself

  • is it a samsung washing machine? sounds like it

    • Yes Samsung why ask its its about to pack in then just over 7,yrs is not too bad.

  • We had the same thing happen with our Samsung washing machine. The black stuff for us was the concrete block disintegrating. Apparently caused by it spinning while not being completely level. It does sound like you need a new one

Edit: for us the black stuff was on the floor, not in the washing

    • Don't know anything about them but what does the concrete block do? What's it for? Does it hold the drum in place or something, machine still works just that last 3 mins it's very loud.
Yes as I thought a new one is on cards but will it to more harm than good if I carry on using this until I get a good deal on a new model.

The metal cuttings not sure where wife got it but said when she took out the washing this stuff fell on floor, I said it can't be coming from inside? Unless it was from the floor under machine and slide out the front lol.

I can't complain on the machine just over 7 years of use and never had issues moved into two other houses since it not too bad.

If it had been much newer might have had someone look at it but at this age would be wasted money for sure, still looks like New the machine to be honest but it certainly does not sound good.

      • sound like you're having the front loader one, the barrel housing the drum has concrete block surrounding it to hold down the machine when it's spinning and also providing anchor for the drum to prevent it from wobbling (horizontal drum need something more structurally sound to hold it because you can only hold it at one end only). Your black stuff could be the concrete bit or some ball bearing at the rear, if it goes missing meaning your machine has trouble keeping the drum from wobbling and hitting the sides. For a 7 year old probably it's time to get something new

  • Check your undies for shrapnel. Could be dangerous.

what does the concrete block do

It's designed to counteract any imbalance during the spin cycle and also to balance the weight of the motor and gearbox.

  • Searched this forum on washing machine extended warranty and its not talked about that much.
I wonder what the % is on people buying extended warranty these days more so on a $1000 machine that is highly rated.
Obviously there are risks in not having but items of that cost or above should be covered longer even if one brand company thinks its the best.
My current fridge and washing machine never had any and lasted beyond any extended warranty but maybe i was lucky.
