There really needs to be legal standards brought in to control selling of these. What kind of a cheap ass company doesn't put the recommended three layers into their product. How much extra profit are they making but not putting one extra layer of cheap material and is it worth putting the public at risk?

    • +5

      it's basically a fashion mask

    • +19

But it has the adidas three stripe logo. Isn't that more important than three layers?

      • Maybe they glazed over 'three layers' and went 'yep we've got our three stripes all gravy here'

    • +2

I'd hardly call a two layer mask "putting the public at risk".

    • +9

I might be wrong but I think they're purposely designed to be more breathable for sports. Good for running or cycling where you don't have to wear a mask but you might choose to wear a face covering that's a bit easier to breathe through. I'm picking some up for running but will stick with 3 layer for other cases.

    • There are legal standards for masks, but they only apply when the product claims a medical benefit. The face mask rule is specifically written to allow face coverings that are not regulated.

They could mandate TGA approved masks, but this would ban anything less than a N95 mask, the manufacturers of cheaper masks avoid making any claims of protection to avoid the cost and hassle of regulation. No simple answer in these circumstances

    • But seriously how much risk is there to the public. If you are coughing and sneezing you should be home and get tested, if you are breathing normally around others that are also breathing normally there's very little risk. Social distancing and hand hygiene are far more important than masks.

      • +1

if you are breathing normally around others that are also breathing normally there's very little risk.

Your opinion is out of date.

Professor Lidia Morawska leads the appeal, which addresses the overwhelming research finding that an infected person exhales airborne virus droplets when breathing and talking that can travel further than the current 1.5-metre social distance requirement.

        https://www.hospitalhealth.com.au/content/clinical-services/…

        • Yes I read that but they are referring to meta studies looking at Sars and a single case study in China. It is not solid evidence as the language they use reflects eg 'most likely' and 'may'. Clearly the most infections are coming from gross failure to follow the basics.

Like an epidemiologist said, 'masks are the sprinkles' on the cake', social distance is the most important.

        • I'd also add
Professor Vardoulakis stressed that the emerging research was not definitive.

holy (profanity) these are available at RRP? I was about to pay $20 on ebay for 1.

Just a thought, if professional surgical masks have not protected our healthcare workers in VIctoria, really does any mask quality matter. I guess most wear it anyway to avoid fines and fair few for health reasons. I maybe wrong but just what I think. So get the one that looks the best and works for you really.

    • +9

Just out of curiosity.. how do you know the masks haven't protected our healthcare workers? I'm genuinely curious as to see the source that has compared the spread of coronavirus in say, a hospital, where the workers are not wearing masks versus the spread when they are wearing masks. I'm not sure there are any hospitals in Australia that are currently running an environment where the workers are not using masks..

      • This study, from the US CDC, involved two hair stylists who continued working while infected with COVID-19. (They were awaiting the results of tests.) None of the stylists’ 139 clients became infected. The stylists and the clients had all worn either cloth or surgical masks.

One of the biggest things these basic masks do is remind people about social distancing, and prevents you from touching your bare hand onto you mouth or nose.
Not perfect by any means but all these little things add up.

    • +6

It reduces transmission. If everyone takes small measures, it keeps reproduction down.

    • +1

      Take your meds.

  • M/L already sold out it seems

  • +1

Sharon Strzelecki has entered the chat.

  • Just bought one, I know it's not 100% hospital grade and all, just want something comfortable for the supermarket

    • -4

Lol the reason they're wearing a specific mask in the hospital is the same reason why we're now wearing a mask outside!

      • Might be misinterpreting your meaning but the two situations are vastly different, as are the risks . Health workers are treating infected people at close quarters. The vast majority of the public on the other hand are not in contact with infected people and are able to social distance. We are required/asked to wear a mask to reduce the possibility of incidental transmission via an asymptomatic carrier. Anecdotally, the combination of social distancing, regular sanitizing and mask wearing reduces the risk of general public transmission massively.

        • +1

I acknowledge that the two situations are different and I'm not saying all they have as ppe is a mask. People in hospitals would have face shields, gloves, hazmat-like overalls for the additional close contact risks they are having.

I'm not sure about you but the metro Melbourne supermarkets (original comment was about masks in supermarket) can be crowded regardless of social distancing/limiting capacity - so more likely than incidental and there are people walking around that are symptomatic whilst claiming they're not (I work in retail/health and have had people come in arguing whilst having a temperature).

My comment whilst light-hearted was intended to remind that we're not just wearing masks because you're gonna get fined, you're wearing them for your own and others' safety. So you should probably get the better 3 layer one like others said.

          Tl;dr - wear good masks.

          • +1

@supacheap: Thanks for clarifying. Think you got begged because it appeared you were poo pooing public mask wearing.

  • Doesn’t appear to be using any special virus blocking fabrics like Viroblock as some other fashion brand masks (i.e: Bonds)

  • Thanks ordered Large one.

Chat with them and they will give you free shipping code..

placed order with free shipping code

    • Is there a generic code for free shipping? My browser doesn't have the chat button… unless they disabled it because too many people

      • +1

no it is not generic code. If you ask them, they will send email with code

    • Generic code?

      • +2

Code they gave me through email was ADI-KCLS-7VPT-NZ39-6DXQ. I don't think it is generic.

Chat with them, they will give you

        • Confirming that it is not a generic code, I asked them and got a different one off free shipping code as well, sent to my email.
Something at least to cheer up today, as I am from VIC :)

          • @AlexCCC: They only offered me 15% off with shipping

            • +1

@julz15: Same here, I actually chatted with someone and they only offered the 15% off when you sign up deal, they didn't have any free shipping codes.

              • @snackerjoe: Initially I told them that I didn't receive the 15% signup bonus, then I "politely" asked for free shipping on top of that.

When I checked out, it was free shipping only, total cost $12 - CR. can't complain.

Probably it has been ozbargained… I believe they have been monitoring this as well.

                • +1

@AlexCCC: You're most likely right about it being ozbargained, they probably got tired of it lol.

                  • @snackerjoe: Yep, they just pasted some generic bullshit about knowing i would like free shipping on a mask but there is no promotions on masks currently.

    • "unfortunately we don't have a shipping code that we can provide"

"no sorry, we don't have a code for free shipping"

    Are these made in China?

Adidas is one of the companies that have forced labour sources.

Ordered XS BLACK (not blue) one fine and got charged via PayPal and got emails saying it's all good and being processed. Half an hour later Adidas email came through saying it's cancelled. Thanks Adidas…

  • Black has sold out I think?

Why would these be any better than pharmaceutical-supplied masks?
Does Adidas know something about health that these pharma companies don't?

    • Washable?

    • Anyone buying a mask with the Adidas logo on it is buying it for some protection plus the logo and looks.

Unfortunately the wife won't let me buy a pack. She's sewed a 4-ply one for me.

      • Just get heat applied paper and put your own logo on it.

      • +2

        4 ply? Quilton gold?

    Normal prices aren't bargains.

    • Tell that to the guy who got Yeezy's at normal price.

      • I don't have their contact details, sorry.

    • +4

Yeh totally agree normal price , not sure how it's a bargain.
Looks like a bit of material with no real benefit , except Adolf Dassler gets a free advertising spot on your 'boat'. Cor blimey gov, whatever next!

  • +4

The only thing this is good for is to avoid a fine in Vic.

  • -2

Masks shouldn't focus on being fashionable…

    • -1

There are plenty of designers that design fashionable face masks while adhering to the minimum recommendations of material and layers.

    • +1

      Why not?

  • -1

The way they shipped orders in last few sales, these will be delivered when pandemic ends;)

  • -1

I have bought a few different masks over the last few months and for those that are interested I find the valve ones far superior to wear for long periods.

  • +3

Neg, but will leave it up to mods whether it's valid. Surely most purchases will be for COVID purposes, and 2-ply offers sub-par protection. I think it's appalling that companies like adidas cash in during a health crisis by promoting sexy but useless masks over the ones we are advised to use.

  • -1

Love all the mask experts in here, I bet 95% of people do not know there is a minimum recommended number of layers, especially when the government basically said any face covering will do, even a scarf.

  • -1

Looks good, probably won't be getting one since I've heard fabric masks without nose bridges aren't too kind to glasses. If Adidas' recent shipping times are anything to go by though, it would arrive after even Victoria clears COVID

  • +1

Polyester mask?… Good luck breathing !!

  • Bonds sells 3 pack of 3 layer cotton masks for $15 with free delivery for loyalty members (free signup)

  • checks over stripes

  • Always been a fan of Adidas.
Thanks for sharing this great deal! =)

  • Saw a few comments of people worried about two layers, consider a mask with hydrophobic treatment like these - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/561006

You get the breathability of less layers, while still providing superior filtration for water particles. Great for people that are active.

  • Branded face mask. Hard pass.

  • -1

bought 1, don't even know why, also had 15% off birthday voucher :)

  • Adidas jockstrap now a mask!

  • received mine today.

they gotta start making sizes for men. these are too small. sigh.

    • Got mine today (VIC - yep later than yours)…. absolutely agree, although i could give these to a female friend to use as g-string.

  • Received mine today (Vic). Blue mask fits me. Black for teenagers and kids. It is 2 layers (which is good for active activities or those having difficulty breathing and speaking with those 3 layer mask) and has the ability to insert a 3rd layer (cloth or those N95 filters on ebay/amazon) if you need it. Versatile, fits well and looks good.

  • Received mine today (VIC). Took almost a month to arrive, understandably. Despite being size M/L, I do find that it can be a bit tight around the ears. It does get more comfortable when worn more. Material very breathable.
