I am looking to get 5G on a plan (to replace mate 20pro) and so far only Woolworths mobile has it on its website…..but and there is a massive but, Woolworths site claims 5g model comes with Exynos!

    • +3

Good pickup, so might be Samsung just copied and pasted the intro from their oversea web, without changing it to Exynos.

      • Or Woolworths copy and pasted it from 4g model haha

        • Lets hope it's Woolies' fault.

It doesn't make sense why Samsung want to use different chip for 4g & 5g.

    • What happens with your mate 20 pro? My friend is considering getting one now for $390. Is it worth it?

      • I'm looking to upgrade my Mate 20 Pro as well. It's been a great phone and still works a treat, just looking to get something newer. The screen on the Mate smokes the Samsung FE in terms of resolution (quad HD on the Mate) but refresh rate goes to the FE. RAM is the same at 6 GB. Cameras on the Mate are awesome. Not sure if the FE can compare. There is the uncertainty around Huawei's battle with the Trump cartel in regards to future software updates, apparently EMUI 11 will be just a doped up version of Android 10 (not 11). But for under $400 your friend would be getting a damn good phone.

    FE = Founder's Edition?

    • Fan Edition

    • +18

      Fxxk Exynos

      • If only they will print this on the retail boxes…

  • +1

I'm considering between this one and Fold 2, for the snapdragon chip, any suggestions?

  • +1

Note that this comes with the 865 and not 865+ for 5G version. Slight difference between the two.

    • Yeah, I've been reading a couple of articles and they've been quoting 865.

    • Good find, was looking for confirmation of this… Still beats Exynos 990 :)

  • +1

Damn, maybe i need to sell my Note20 ultra and get this. Even though the note is serving me well, my small hand is crying every day

  • Still flogging their 990 i see, it sucks compared to 865.

For $250 more (and without requiring student portal), you could get a much better phone in every way than any of Samsung Australia available phones: Note 20 Plus Ultra, 256Gb with Snapdragon 865+ chipset, better hardware in every respect + you get the amazing Stylus!

    https://mymobile.com.au/sam-galaxy-note-20-ultra-n9860-512g-…

    • +1

$250 more? The price for the Note 20 Ultra shows as AU$1,507.00, so 50%+ ($507) more.

      • -5

$250 more than the highest specc'd FE phone. You've compared wrong models.
        Well worth the money.

    • Note 20 ultra in Australia issues Exynos chipset which is way inferior than the Snapdragon variant found in the 5g fan edition.

Hello, ladies, look at your phone, now back to mine, now back at your phone, now back to mine. Sadly, your one isn’t like mine, but if it stopped using crappy CPUs switched to Snapdragon, it could be like mine. Look down, back up, where are you? You’re on a boat with the phone your phone could be like. What’s in your hand, look back at mine. I have it, it’s an oyster with two tickets to that thing you love. Look again, the tickets are now diamonds. Anything is possible when your phone uses Snapdragon and not a Exynos. I’m on a horse~

Flat screen alone is massive improvement over this curved glass crap.

Good news guys, I just confirmed with Samsung support team, the 5g is equipped with SD865

    • Also just received an email from Officeworks regarding it and it confirms the 5G version is Snapdragon.

  • Guys, this is 865 not 865+, I don't think 865 is that much better than Exynos 990. Biggest difference will be the power consumption, 1 hour more SoT.

    • One whole hour sounds like a lot

      • It is. So if you are a heavy user then it is important. For me, Exynos 990 is still a whole day phone. I get about 5 to 6 hour SoC each day. 120 hz.

    • wow I didn't expect the difference to be so large

  • Tempting af.

Trying to get my partner off iPhone and me off an Exynos processor + big phone (currently on Note 10+), but not sure if it's worth the $ at the moment.

  • Anyone know if it ditches the ToF sensor?

Tempting upgrade for my S10 5G. No microSD is killing me.

Found the answer - only the Ultra users the ToF sensor so this one is fine

    • I believe S10 5g comes in with either 256 gb or 512. What you storing?

      • I got the 256gig (free from Telstra). Videos of my 2 year old son chew it all up.

        • I have s10 5g 512 gb version, have plenty of storage for me. Any specific use case of toF?

          • @Modesty: Re ToF - No quite the opposite in fact. That's the autofocus sensor they used on the S20 Ultra, which by all accounts sucks. Want to avoid it.

  • +1

$910.60 for the 5G 256GB and a USB-C Cable, after 5% off and $50 discount code. Might be time to upgrade/move from iPhone 8 finally?

    • What did you add to make the total above $1000?

      • My total for FE 5G 256GB with Dex Cable came to $947.88. This includes the 5% promo for total being over $1000 as well as the $50 voucher.

      • I added S20 FE Clear Standing Case.

  • My S10+ is still going strong.. Thinking of holding out until next year's flagship.. anyone else in the same boat?

    • +1

Yeah, similar - N10+ for me.

I'll pretend I didn't see this and hold out till next year.

  • +1

Feeling pretty stupid being a first mover on the s20 5g. Wish there was an exchange of sorts to get the snapdragon version.

  • +1

Just received the z fold 2 yesterday. Haven't opened it yet and still within 14 day change of mind period. Snapdragon was a big reason why I went with the fold. Now whether to return the fold and get this, along with an extra $1200ish back in my pocket. Decisions…

    • Return it. I played with it in a Samsung store and I reckon it's a gimmick, especially for 2x the cost of FE.

    • whats your final decision? I want to buy a fold but this phone came out

      • Haven't reached one yet. Definitely have some thinking to do.

      • +1

I've mulled it over and decided im gonna keep the fold2. I've spent too much time watching videos and looking up reviews on it to give it up lol. It'll be fun to use. I just bought samsung care+ (50% off atm) so it's pretty much final now…

        • +1

yeah man don't worry about it. The fold2 looks awesome and so much more fun than these.

  • can someone clarify if this FE version downsized (spec) version of the original 5G model (except snapdragon) ?

    https://www.whistleout.com.au/MobilePhones/News/Samsung-Gala…

  • My wife can salary package this but is refusing to upgrade from her 2.5 year S8 that we are currently on a $39 per month plan on (out of contract). My maths tells me that with her tax rates, it would come out to $547.34 for the S20 FE 5G 128gb. Does anyone know if workplaces allow you to apportion payments towards a salary packaged item over two FBT years? i.e. will we be able to split that over 12 months or would it be just 6 months as the new FBT tax year starts in April (i.e. October to March only remaining time).

Is the FE overkill for someone that doesn't do anything special with their phone and mostly uses it for the usual photos-YouTube-general use cases? Her battery life on S8 sucks. Figured 5G is the way to go to make it a tad more future proof (plus I'm just curious!).

    • 5G is a gimmick, she won't feel the difference in her daily use.
phones tend to get poor battery life after a few years with daily recharge, you could consider getting a new original battery swapped in (watch out for imitation ones which may be even worse than your current worn out one) that'd be a lot cheaper than upgrading especially if your wife ain't complaining that her S8 is slow.

  • Thank you OP..=)

Just called Samsung and they said this pricing is not available on the EPP yet. I kept trying to log in to the govt portal and it takes me to the normal Samsung Store.

  • Is the $50 newsletter voucher still available? I can't seem to find where to sign up to marketing emails

  • +3

hoping jb hifi can stack the preorder with the $99 dollar plan and gift card

  • +1

seems like people missing important information from Samsung website.

    Pro:
with the 5G version, we finally get the SD 865 chipset for AU. (that might be why so many upvotes)
    3.5mm headphone jack

    Cons:
with the 4G version, we still get the exynos crap.
6GB ram could be a bottle neck for the chipset and is surely not a flagship spec overall.
Glass front (Gorilla Glass 3) for the front. Plastic for the back.
camera setup is not on par with other S20 series.

For me, still no go, I would still go for something like this SD865 version. (which seems like OOS at the moment). This is reviewed to be the best overall S20 series over the S20 ultra by a lot of youtube reviewers.
    https://mymobile.com.au/sam-galaxy-s20-dual-g9860-5g-128gb-w…

    • +1

I heard there's no 3.5mm jack for this?

Honestly if I didn't see the "Snapdragon > Exynos" comments all over OzBargain, as a casual user, I really wouldn't have any hesitations on the S20 normal now, after seeing some of the downsides on the S20 FE.

      • Yes. After seeing the downsides on the S20 FE, we might start thinking for the similar price, shall we compromise so much for a better chipset comparing with recent S20+ 5G deals.

And I think you are right there is no 3.5mm jack. my mistake

    • those reviews are for the snapdragon version.
also remember new samsung phones have got 3 year os updates now

    • It's more clear-cut:

Camera setup. Main camera which is used 90% of the time is the same.
Telephoto lens has lower mp but bigger sensor. It also has 3x optical zoom whilst the telephoto lens on the s20 is only hybrid zoom. So for 2-3x zoom at least it should be similar or better on the FE.
Ultra wide definitely better on the s20+.

5g 256gb version has 8gb ram and still cheaper than the s20+.

    • +4

I'm actually thinking the plastic back is an advantage. Having glass on the back is pointless if it's always covered by a case and can crack. Plastic should also be lighter.

    • G9860 is missing all carrier specific 5G bands in Australia. n40, n28, n5

  • so do we get bonus of Galaxy Buds when we order from EPP store?

    • +1

      no

  • Ozb style would be to make your order over $1k and order from EPP and try to claim free buds

    • please advice how to claim the free buds?

      • automatically if you will buy from Samsung store, jbhifi, goodguys and amazon samsung store not amazon market

  • +1

Telco EPP's are getting an even better deal according to banner on EPP website. No price on the listing although I won't rule out 50% off or at least a minimum of 35% off, making the 5G version an even sweet deal.

    • -4

Good on them whoever has access to.
Some of them are just too greedy to help a OZB fellow and would ask for couple of hundred dollars.

      Sucks

      • +6

I know it sucks, but you can't expect anyone to give away a 35-50% off code for free. Either they will end up selling the code here of on FB marketplace. I have done that and happy to help people get phone at EPP cost but giving away a code for free specially if you can get up to $200-$300 no way.

You may not agree but each to his own.

    • Are you sure? In that case, I will hold on until that pricing comes up.

      • +1

Yes, you can login to your Telco EPP and the home page will show banner for S20 FE, 'Stay tuned for a special Samsung+ promotion'

  • -1

Spinning fan edition or fan boy edition?

  • does it include the free galaxy buds

  • Looks like the jacked the prices. They are now:

    • $849.15
    • $976.65
    • $1,061,65
  • +1

Telstra pre-order is also up now. For some reason they only sell the 128g 5g version.

    • Same with Optus. So the telcos don't seem to have the Navy 256gb 5g version.

  • Samsung Care+ for two years is not half price in EPP and no ear buds.

  • So all the telcos are only carrying the 6gb version?

  • Which version has 8GB? is it the 256GB model?

    • yeah, only the 256gb model. Just checked via Samsung chat.

Could someone comment camera performance on Apple vs Pixel vs Samsung year 2020?

My wife and I been using iphone & Pixel for quite a few years now, and sister has both iphone & Huawei flagship.

From my personal experience, all 3 companies have excellent camera but pixel video is really shite. Huawei too still camera performance is really good.

To be honest I'm starting to hate my pixel 4 after the lockdown, really poor battery and face unlock has become a pain-the-axx since the mandatory mask in Victoria.

Pixel 5 leaks seem to suggest bigger battery + fingerprint this year but still using the same sensors + their magical camera processing.

What do you guys think? Anyone in the same boat?

    • +2

Yeah Pixels have always had the best camera for photos but very lacklustre video recording capabilities. For video recording, the iPhones have always been the best.

    • Pixel video quality is just bad, Pixel 5 even come with lower SoC, i personally think it's not gonna be different than previous gen lol. Samsung video quality is great, but auto-focus is not that good compare with newer iPhone devices. iPhone is rock solid but their stock camera is just too basic and iOS limitations is just eh.

  • Thanks OP! Finally jumped on the 256GB Cloud Navy 5G! Got it for 928.88 with a silicon case! Fantastic Value for such a great device. Model Number is SM-G781BZBPXSA which has 8GB RAM as well compared to the 128 GB which has 6GB, so a no brainier for 30 bucks difference.
    https://images.samsung.com/is/content/samsung/p5/au/galaxy-s…

    • Where did you get that for $928.88 from? No bonus ear buds I guess

      $50 voucher and 5% off?

      • no bonus ear bud for samsung edu store or business portal

      • Correct! 5% off+50 bucks voucher without the buds

        • how did you get 928? case and phone didn't exceed 1000..

          • @GreyMann: I added both to cart before applying the newsletter voucher

            • @Rimas: When I add the $50 off voucher the 5% dissappears and the price goes up by $2

              • @Squeezy: Ah so they may have implemented a fix!

  • Anyone knows if the S20 FE 5G model with 8GB 256GB available only in Cloud Navy support mmwave as well as both NSA and SA Sub 6 networks ? I dont know why so many people posted that 5G model is 865+ when it is actually 865 , no specs on samsung website, what a beautiful launch Samsung
