Subaru Liberty GT owners; need advice

Good evening everyone.

I really love Subaru.

I've driven a few old gen1 & gen2 liberty's including my own RS TURBO but I'm thinking about upgrading possibly to a liberty GT like 2005+

Would love to find out more from People who have owned or do own one?

How are they in regards to torque and power and handling?

Are they quick off the mark or are they restricted by their ECU?

Are they easy enough to service or are they costly compared to other cars?

Are they reliable or do they suffer from head gasket issues like most Subaru?

Appreciate any feedback good or bad.

Thanks.

  • Gtb owner here and also a subbie fan.

Mine is the 6sp man that you get from the facelifted gen 4 (sti box) and i love it. Easy to drive, enough power but could always do with more.

Grip is amazing however car does feel heavy compared to a wrx. Depends on driving style… Dash through tight mountain roads or more of a cruise missile?
Off the mark they are ok, however to get the published times you really need to thrash them and burn the clutch to launch. You won't be doing it on a regular basis trust me… Plenty of overtaking torque though if you drop a gear and keep it above 3k rpm.

Maintenance is on the higher side, I have had mine 7 years or so and would have easily dropped 10k on services and I only drive it 5-8k per year. That includes replacing bilstein suspension due to knock, rebuild centre diff and tail shaft, radiator, major service Inc timing belt and water pump etc.

They are a lot of car for the money if you can find a good one that has had regular servicing which is critical. Basic mods are easy to find but find a different car for more crazy stuff and big hp. Think of it as a bigger heavier more understated wrx.

    • Yes I was worried about the weight I have an old RS TURBO LIBERTY it is a beast not sure if I should update though

      • Here in Adelaide we have alot of hills so can be fun

  • join the suburu liberty facebook groups, good insight into it. I looked at a used one but I just couldn't find a good condition, well priced manual example anywhere and gave up.

    • Yeah it is hard to find one that's been looked after and not thrashed
