Google just announced the Chromecast with Google TV for $99, but a little less known is a deal that allows you to tack on 6 months of Netflix ($95.94 worth of credit) for a grand total of $139.99, bringing the effective price of the Chromecast to $44.05.

Seems to be a long-running deal (through to December 31, 2021).

Tips:

  • If you're a Google One subscriber, you'll get 3% back in store credit if you're on a 200 GB plan, or 10% back in store credit if you're on a 2 TB or higher plan.
  • You can purchase three of these bundles per Google account.
  • The deal is available to both new and existing Netflix subscribers.
  • The 6 months of Netflix offer is based on a Standard plan ($15.99/month). Netflix works off a dollar-based credit model, so if you're on a Basic plan ($10.99/month), you'll actually get 8.73 months worth of credit, but if you're on a Premium plan ($19.99/month), you'll get 4.80 months worth of credit.
  • If you've redeemed the Netflix offer, but end up returning the Chromecast, Google will refund you $99; meaning you'll still have scored $95.94 worth of Netflix credit for $40.99.

Note: Previously out of stock, and now back in stock! If it goes out of stock again, keep refreshing the page as Google has progressively added stock on previous occasions.

          Only 8GB total before including OS etc. I'm pretty sure I saw reported. About 4GB free.

          It's not meant for storing anything but does mean installing apps could be limiting, particularly something like Kodi which tends to create a large cache of thumbnails etc. I had to add a USB stick to my Mibox or Kodi would just fill everything - and I don't even use Kodi all that much.

            @Shonky: Thanks for that. My parents only use Plex/Kayo (and 7/9/10 apps) anyway. So that should be more than enough for them.

            @Shonky: To be fare, that is your choice having kodi get all that data. I don't bother leave it off. Doesn't use all that much space. Plex i cant help myself but i think it stores that mostly on server not client end. Could be wrong.

              @Skinnerr: Yeah I don't use Kodi much - just a frontend for MythTV. Mainly Plex, Netflix, Kayo, SBS On Demand etc so all streaming.

    My Netflix is coming up for renewal too… I usually hold out for the Coles/Woolworths promos where they give you a heap of bonus points with the gift cards, but this might be better value given I plan to upgrade to these Chromecasts anyway.

      It's a standalone device with its own apps (similar to an Apple TV), which you can cast to separately as well.

        I've taken previous Chromecasts overseas with no issues - no VPN required, just connect to the local WiFi network and cast away.

    Was waiting to see the pricing on this. From what I can gather, this is good being OEM Google (faster updates?), and small footprint.

    Not bad with the Netflix credits in this deal, but $99 on it's own, I'm thinking the Vodafone TV ($72) is still a viable alternative? Or am I missing something? Already have a VTV and Chromecast (non ultra), thinking to get this or another VTV…

      Netflix credits make it effectively $44 so if you're already spending money on Netflix, it's a better deal.

      And yes definitely expect a better/longer update/support experience based on previous Google products.

        I pay AUD 5.6/month for the Standard HD, so that'd be ~34 worth of credit, IF I manage to change my subscription back to Australia and use the credit. After 6 months, I will be back to the overpriced Australian price. Not worth trying unless I want to buy the new Chromecast anyway.

        I actually want, but will wait for better deals.

        It can do 4K and HDR… But it's stuck on Android TV version 9 and I don't expect any more updates. I think this Google device actually has the same CPU, but it will have the latest OS and receive updates so I think it'll be the better device 🙂

          You are right that this is over priced for what it it. Given the Vodafone TV is $79 and has Freeview tuners, this really ought to be more like $70 at most - and when you take into account it's $50 in the US it's worth waiting for the deals to come out. $99 including 6 months Netflix might be OK.

      Shield craps on this spec wise. (Own a Shield, will be getting one of these to replace an aging Nexus Player).

      Shield is (probably) over spec'd for Android/Google TV generally, but it does run just about every emulator up to PS2/GameCube/Wii and demanding android (PC ports) games.

        Most content is still only HD, and Shield still has the best AI Upscaling of any device, far superiors than even a top end Sony TV.
        So yeah, if you have a 4K TV and care about quality the Shield is the way to go.

        (Technically the upscaling AI is now in the Nvidia 3000 GPU's, but they are not comparable to this use case)

        Should also point out that if your Chromecast outputs 1080p content at 4k then regardless of how good your TV's upscaling engine is it can't do squat as the Chromecast has already upscaled, just has done a really poor job of it. In which case it's best to set the output at 1080p and let your TV do the upscaling.

        The only spec advantage of this over the shield would be HDR support for youtube, google movies, etc.

        Shield doesn't support the codec or something :( So annoying!

        Do you know if you can run a plex server on this? (i'm assuming not!?)

    Specs for anyone interested:

    It's powered by an Amlogic S905X2 SoC, which has four 1.8GHz Cortez A53 cores and a Mali-G31MP2 GPU. There's also 2GB of RAM, a measly 4.4GB of user storage (there is probably 8GB total), 802.11ac, and Bluetooth 4.1.

    What if I'm currently billed for Netflix via iTunes.
    Am I still able to add credit to my account? I don't think I can see any such option in my billing setup on Netflix.

      Says this in the fine print:
      'To redeem the Netflix offer, customers must set up an eligible Chromecast with Google TV device and follow the instructions to apply the offer value to a Netflix account by 1 March 2022. Available to new and existing Netflix subscribers.'

      So I'm guessing you set up the Chromecast, log into your Netflix, then there's a code for the credit. We won't know until someone gets one.

      I pay for Netflix via iTunes. I've just received my new Chromecast TV and after trying to redeem the credit, I received a message that my account is not eligible.
      So now I need to make the call to either open a new account or return the device.
      Wish I new that in advance.

    Google TV launch price is US$50, so to value the Googe TV at AU$99 seems a hefty Australia Tax…

    I prefer straight Chromecast anyway. Hopefully we see runout pricing on Chromecast Ultras!

    This looks ok for the netflix credit alone (have currently got rid of it to watch some Amazon shows instead).
    Still got an original chromecast somewhere, not bad for travel works with some hotels.

    Few questions:
    - Any point if i have an 1080p Android TV with built in chromecast
    - Does it work on 5GHz network (my built in doesn't)
    - Can you use it plugged in to a Computer monitor to cast to?

      As your TV is 1080P , you wont get the added benefits of 4k or HDR etc etc,
      Google TV is the new branding for Android TV so essentially your TV may get an upgrade depending if they still roll out updates to it and it would be the same layout.. https://tv.google/intl/en_au/#for-you

      You can plug the Chromecast into any display with HDMI
      Not to sure about 5Ghz but seems likely

      There are other added benefits also , as it will control smart home devices, not sure what that means yet but its listed in its specs.

        Yes, probably no point as I don't need a better telly (just got a 2015 Bravia LCD KDL-65W850c model in 2017) which has android and seems to go good for gaming with a 5m hdmi cable and xbox wireless controller from the PC with no lag @ 1080p.

        I did try plugging my old gen 1 chromecast into a PC monitor once and didn't work, perhaps theyve come a long way since then. Was thinking the free netflix is alright anyway and sell the device ;)
