        • I have a good Sony and the Android TV interface is snappy

See point 4. Fast now doesn't mean it will be in a few years. Don't about you, but I don't buy a tv every few years.

plus it lets me install whatever I want

          As does this?

  • The price tag of this is $49 usd. I don’t know why Australian are always ripped off. Exchange rate fluctuation is just an excuse.

    • +23
      1. GST (US pricing never includes sales taxes)
      2. Australian Consumer Law (increased post sale warranty and support costs)
      3. Small population (economy of scale for distribution)
      4. Big country with low density population (high logistics costs).
      5. Finally unpredictability with exchange rates (they need to cover themselves if the exchange rate drops after they’ve locked in a price).
      • +1

Very good points. Many of us do forget that the Australian Consumer Law (ACL) provisions are baked into many distributor and retail prices here in Australia.

        • -3

nope they are not. pure fiction

      • -6

nope none of that even vaguely accounts for the inability to import at a lower market price around the world as you could do before oz became american controlled.

  • Can this direct play mkv from plex?

    • +4

Yes, Android TV is one of the best clients for Plex, best app support of them all.

      • So my family using my plex server probably won't need to transcode anything?
        Thats awesome.

      • That's awesome!! I was thinking if getting Nvidia TV shield to be able to stream MKV movies from desktop to the TV. Not sure if the sound (DTS) will comt through

Is it better to connect this to AVR to TV —> ARC audio return to AVR

Definitely connect to avr if you have one

  • What's Google TV? Does it work in Australia?

    • Yes it does as its officially releasing in Australia. Its a combination of a chromecast with a tv UI and remote. Think of it as a apple tv like device but using google android.

      • Thanks. I don't think there's exclusive content through Google TV. At least from what I'm reading

        • ………..which is a good thing.

    • It’s just a operating system rather than a service, you might be thinking of YouTube TV which we don’t have in Australia.

    • Try not to confuse google TV with Youtube live TV

    • There's also Youtube TV, You will need VPN to set up that and then it can be used without VPN

      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/530696

  • The remote looks like those ones you get in hospital with the cord attached.

    • this one has netflix and youtube buttons lol

What about Google One subscribers, is the 10% cashback additional to the 15% cashback. That would make it almost same as US price.

    • Their support said only one promotion can be applied at a time but there's no promo code for this. Google One subscribers automatically get 10% discount. At checkout it doesn't even tell you how much credit you'll get so can't tell if it stacks.

  • Will Google TV allow installation of all android tv apps including kodi?

  • Can't see anything about this credit on the Google page. Am I missing something?

  • +4

They should have priced it $85 in the first place, that's the fair price.

  • Google ethernet adapter is seperate with this model too. $29.99: https://store.google.com/au/product/chromecast_ethernet_adap…

  • Thinking about buying an Android/Smart TV, can I get any app from the Play Store using this instead?
My better half wants to connect this to a non smart TV and use the Les Mills app from the Play Store as well as Netflix, Prime Etc.

If this won't work, any recommendations for what will?

    • This is googles version of a apple tv just using android. If a app has been officially released that you are after then yes it should work. And if not more than likely can sideload.

  • Can the Google Assistant on the remote work without the TV being on? This way I can use this in the garage without needing another Google home.

    • You can't do it from your mobile phone..?

I wouldn't expect the device to sleep or know the state of the connected TV assuming it isn't relying on the TV for power

      • The point of having the remote is there is no need to have a phone. That is the big advantage of this new chromecast.

        • Since it's the garage door I was thinking it was more likely you'd have access to the phone in your vehicle then an Android TV remote. Not sure the answer to your question anyway sorry.

    • If it's anything like my TV which has a bluetooth remote with mic on it. then no. You need to push the assistant button then speak. Also, you need to be in range of the TV via bluetooth.

  • Am I able to install Hulu (and other "US-only" apps) in the Australian model to use with VPN?

EDIT: according to comments, shouldn't be a problem.

  • Is this better than Vodafone TV?

    • In most ways as its more powerful spec wise but it lacks a built in usb, ethernet & RF antenna port.

      • Thanks, I heard there is a new Vodafone TV on the way, will see what spec it comes with.

    • I've got a Vodafone TV already,
and I can't see any new feature to make me upgrade to this.

Vodafone TV already has remote and seems to have all the functionality.
      Am I missing something?

      • Depends on how badly you want some of the HDR or sound features such as Dolby Vision & Dolby Atmos. Also depends on if there are unsupported apps on Vodaphone TV that are on the Chromecast with google tv and if you use google Assistant, as it also has a newer firmware version android 10 currently installed.

      • smaller, hangs behind tv, no voda logo

      • Have to say I have 2 vodafone TVs and can't see benefit in upgrading. I don't watch any 4K material and the vodafone TV remote is fantastic, with even a numeric keypad that allows you to jump to the precise time location on the media. Also sometime I would watch content via a website and then a USB mouse becomes quite handy. Not sure if this new chromecast can be controlled with a mouse (I don't have any bluetooth mouse).

  • Can you cast 4K videos and photos from your phone?

    • Yes, it contains chromecast.

      • My question is if it can cast 4K videos and photos. The current generation is limited to 1080p, but I suspect it's a software (google photos) limitation.

        • Yes, as stated as its 4k compatible. Think of this as a new version of 4k chromecast ultra but also with a android UI and remote.

  • Ordered then cancelled. Can't see any benefits at this stage for me except an app for Kayo.

    • Pointless for me too, having a 1080p android tv, would be handy for the Netflix deal but trying to hook up Netflix Brazil for$8/month

Also wouldn't mind having voice search on the remote (mic), my Sony Remote model doesn't, multiple remotes bit annoying too assume the Chromecast doesn't do volume?

      • I have an old 1080p Smart TV still have Netflix and Amazon Prime, so may not need it now.

        • Same, all basic apps still work well, even Nord pvn, handier than Chromecasting half the time

  • Why would you even need remote with chromecast? Isn't the phone being remote is the main idea?

    • +2

Personally I never want a phone anywhere near me when watching TV………having to turn it on, unlock it, connect it to WiFi, uses up the phones power and so on. I never understood why anyone would want to use their phone as a remote other than the novelty factor back in the day. A dedicated remote is just an awful lot easier. For the most part though I find using my TV's remote (via HDMI-CEC) works fine for most things. Each to their own I suppose.

      • Lock screen widget to turn TV on/off, volume up/down/mute via phones IR blaster is something I use daily for the living room TV.

Saves me walking over to the couch to pickup the remote when I'm on the other side of the room/walking out the door.

      • I have been using my phone since chromecast 2

        • I find it easier to skip/fast forward using the phone vs remote control
        • never had issues with phone power
        • I like to have my phone next to me while I'm watching tv

each to their own like you said

    • Does both. Can cast if you want from phone or use the provided remote for a more traditional method of controlling tv.

    • I find my phone (Pixel 4 and also all my previous generation Pixels) takes a few seconds to pick up the chromecast signal and appear in the notification blind. It can also be a bit clunky and non-responsive, I hope this works better.

    • its google tv with chromecast, not chromecast only.

    • This is perfect for my parents. It took me hours to try to explain to them how to use CC with their phone and I still get phone calls about it every now and then. This is their christmas present.

  • White is back in stock by the way, just bought one.

    • But not the bundle with Netflix

  • +1

Will this thing allow you to fast forward/rewind? Doesn't look like there's any buttons for it… or do you use the circle thing at the top?

We're getting shafted by G here in Australia. In the US, this was launched at an RRP cheaper than the Chromecast Ultra. Here? Same price. Double the US price.

    What a joke.

    • How is it double the US price? Now remember to factor in FX rates, GST, and other Sales tax, added cost of 2 year warranty (is what we get in Oz). Only then can one compare prices. I don't think it is double the price here when all said and done.

    • here come the defenders of segregated markets - take cover

'Right now, if you head over to https://tv.youtube.com/welcome/ you’ll be greeted by a pop-up window that says, “Try YouTube TV free, and get a Chromecast on us!”

That sure sounds like you’re not only getting the Chromecast for free, but also YouTube TV for free, but the fine print makes it clear that’s not quite true.

Instead, once you agree to the free trial period for YouTube TV, and make your first monthly payment of $65, then you’ll get the free Chromecast.

Oh, and it’s only valid for first-time YouTube TV subscriptions, something I can verify: When I clicked through to sign up, I wasn’t offered this promotion…..'

'Google’s new Chromecast with Google TV is a $50 streaming media player that combines the convenience of a Chromecast device with the full feature set you’d expect from a set-top box like a Roku or a Fire TV.' US pricing

      • Not sure what your point it. There's a separate deal to get people to sign up to Youtube TV, which is Google's attempt at cable in the US only. This is NOT Google TV (which is a OS for TVs and now Chromecasts). Last year, Google gave out free nest mini's for the EoY/christmas deal in Aus for people who are signed up to Youtube Premium, I can imagine that this year they may give out Chromecasts.

        • perhaps you would be kind enough to read the whole piece.. especially

      have a great day…

      • I assume that's a joke, but as to not mislead anyone else, the US ethernet adapter and AUS ethernet adapter are exactly the same - both 10/100 Mbps.

        • well spotted! They're very slow

Drinking game. Shot everything someone over simplifies USD vs AUD pricing.

How many times does it have to be explained there’s more to it than exchange rates. 🤦‍♂️

      • -4

Because there clearly isn't when even google sells directly cheaper to people in other countries.

Now if you had some economics qualifications you would grasp why that is - it is achievable only when markets are forcibly segregated and purchasers are forced to accept higher pricing because they cannot buy elsewhere.

Like the snake-oil about fossil fuels, and no climate change, segregated markets lead inevitably to market inefficiency and industry failure.

I can see your embarrassed by your lack of knowledge about economic market modelling but if you keep reading you'll get there in the end.

        • I think "@petry" is just spamming here. Should be ignored (or banned…..ha!) i.e.. looking at at his/her recent posts. Just gibberish.

          • @Borg: So echoing the fact that its $50 us and $100 au here as printed by millhouse, and is even available for free on promotions in the US is both spamming and gibberish and you want me banned for quoting the published American promotion?

It seems clear enough to me, and to many others, so perhaps you should explain why, since its not off topic.

Try typing 'How to get the new Chromecast with Google TV for free' its all over the web. i can't publish the many links because this site doesn't allow it… don't know why people decided the free chromecast didn't include google tv when the ads all state that exactly…

And i don't why some people are arguing so hard that $100 is well justified in australia alone when its even free in America but clearly the negs are to hide the fact.

            • @petry: Google will make plenty of money from YouTube TV in the American market, hence a much cheaper price. Incentivise the hardware which will in turn incentivise the service. Google cannot rely on that for other markets, hence the more expensive hardware price. I think there's a lot of factors that play in as to why it's more expensive outside of the US..

              • @BeerCrisp: yes there is and profit is the main one.

                • @petry: Yes, because a device needs to turn over x amount of profit to be worth it. Google has numerous other ways to turn a profit in the US outside of the hardware itself. In Australia, not so much, so the hardware costs more. And that's only one of the totally valid factors for a higher price in AUS.

                  • @BeerCrisp: Glad to see that the size of the profit margin is finally acknowledged as the driver of the differential.

So if companies are always going to charge more in Australia because its a smaller market, why does Australia now have more border tariffs and more import restrictions than ever before, which all act to reduce price competition on products being sold at much higher prices here?

            • @petry:

Try typing 'How to get the new Chromecast with Google TV for free'

It's not free. It's complimentary when you sign up for youtube TV. The service is not available in Australia therefore no complimentary device.

And i don't why some people are arguing so hard that $100 is well justified in australia alone when its even free in America but clearly the negs are to hide the fact.

I'm not sure they're arguing hard that $100 is justified as much as mentioning there are other factors besides just the exchange rate.

For example: competition. There is more competition of devices in the US so they need to position themselves accordingly. Here they can try to charge a premium price for what is (arguably) a premium product in our marketplace.

              • @dmbminaret: I didn't say it was free in Australia and its really boring watching the new tactics of asserting things never said in order to denigrate, provoke and bully me.

Those multitude of fake assertions this week are clearly organised, and accompanied by attempts to ban me for my opinions, and the facts of certain matters.

There is less price competition here because Australia has archaic policies, protected markets, border tariffs, a misinformative media, and lousy consumer laws. While this was fine in boom times the high wages are unsustainable now, so there is big trouble ahead.
