So I can't get this offer unless I'm an existing Westpac customer?
    Any workarounds?

    • +2

This may work: Sign up for Westpac choice account, transfer $2000 in (to avoid $5 monthly fee), transfer $2000 out, sign up for credit card, close Westpac choice account when get outcome of application.

      • +3

Westpac Choice account currently has a $50 offer as well which is a bonus!

      • +1

Has anyone tried this with success?

      • +1

So annoying they dont have fee free account

      • Just to add a few comments:
I've made a mistake when filling the driver license number, then branch verification is required. However, the online account is already opened and I have submitted the credit card application which is now in income verif-step. Should be able to skip the banking account opening step:)

      • +1

        yup, this worked

      • Can confirm I just opened a Westpac choice account, then navigated via the Products menu in internet banking, and was presented this offer (y)

    • Not that i found, it needs to be enabled on your existing account for the offer to proceed

  • +1

This is a good deal. I just did 60K QFF points with $99 first year annual fee on this card, when I had gone through all the better options and there were very few deals on offer. So 75K QFF points and no annual fee is a winner.

    • +4

$50 annual (rewards) fee for choosing Qantas points.

    • I got this deal in the past and it is good at $0 annual for first year.
I still have this card 2 years later even though its $250 yearly fee.

You get car rental insurance, travel insurance etc

  • Am I eligbile if I have a low rate credit card with them already?

    • “Existing Westpac customers who currently hold an Earth Classic, Earth Platinum, Earth Platinum Plus, Earth Black, Altitude Classic, Altitude Platinum or Altitude Black credit card, or who have held one in the last 12 months, are not eligible for this offer.”

      So you should be eligible.

    • +2

I'm in the same boat as you asaprocky. No offer from Westpac for me as yet. Scrub that I found it under products/credit cards

      • Ah was wondering where it was. Legend mate

  • +1

Does having a points-earning card within the last 12-18 months preclude you from this deal? I can't find anything that says otherwise.

    • +2

12 months. It's there, in the fine print at the bottom, which says:

Bonus Altitude or Qantas Points Promotion Altitude Platinum: To qualify for this promotion you must apply and be approved for a new Altitude Platinum card between 6th August 2020 and 11th November 2020 and spend the minimum amount of $3,000 on eligible purchases on an Altitude Platinum card within 90 days from card approval in one or more transactions. The bonus Altitude Points or Qantas Points will be added to your points balance within 12 weeks once you meet the eligible spend criteria. Existing Westpac customers who currently hold an Earth Classic, Earth Platinum, Earth Platinum Plus, Earth Black, Altitude Classic, Altitude Platinum or Altitude Black credit card, or who have held one in the last 12 months, are not eligible for this offer.

    • +1

Only if you held a Westpac points earning card (Earth Classic, Earth Platinum, Earth Platinum Plus, Earth Black, Altitude Classic, Altitude Platinum or Altitude Black) in the last 12 months.

  • +1

Looks like an upgrade on the current offer but for existing customers.
Still waiting on them to do the same and waive the fee for the Altitude black as well as since the last one all the way back in May

  • where in the T&Cs does it say for existing customers only?

    • +7

The page that's linked is not actually the deal. The page that's linked says in the fine print "The discounted first year annual card fee of $99 is available when you apply and are approved for a new Altitude Platinum card between 6th August 2020 and 11th November 2020". I.e. you would pay $99 in year 1.

The actual deal is through Westpac's online banking (hence why there's no public link). If you log into online banking -> Products -> credit cards -> under "Altitude Platinum" it says "Get 100,000 Altitude or 75,000 Qantas bonus points + 1st year annual card fee waived (usually $150)" -> click the button -> says "Since you're already with us: Here’s an exclusive offer – up to 100,000 bonus reward points and $0 first year annual card fee" -> can apply there.

So you can only get this deal through online banking, which you can only access if you have or previously had a westpac banking login (i.e. you are or have been a existing customer). If you go through the public page, you'll pay the $99 annual fee.

  • +1

Does it matter if I’ve had this card in the past 12 months?

    • Same boat here

    • Yes unfortunately. Existing Westpac customers who currently hold an Earth Classic, Earth Platinum, Earth Platinum Plus, Earth Black, Altitude Classic, Altitude Platinum or Altitude Black credit card, or who have held one in the last 12 months, are not eligible for this offer.

      • Unlucky - I closed the account at the end of Jan so I can at least wait it out while I churn my current card.

        Thanks for the response.

  • Nice deal OP.

What's the expiry date for the deal?

    • +1

      3 February 2021

  • The old offer for anyone - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/557328

  • Basically equates to a free pair of RM Williams on the Qantas store as per another post

  • Targetted. No love for existing Earth card holder.

    • +3

And that's why we close our credit cards after we get the bonus points, so that the 12 month clock resets :-) … well, apart from maybe one or two keeper credit cards with very low credit limits, and no annual fees, that also don't exclude us from offers such as this, and that have useful features (e.g. price protection / flight delay pass / no international currency fee / so forth), for when we're between offers, and also to make the credit scoring algorithms believe that we can hold a card open for longer than 3 months if only the banks made us a good enough offer ;-)

      • Earth/altitude black cards are "free" with home loan packages.

Wish they can have a higher point offer with higher spend in first 90 days to save everyone some time/paperwork.

        • +1

So what if it's "free"? There are plenty of no annual fee credit cards. The only mild value of that card is in the points on transactions (I assume you're getting 1 or 0.75 QFF points per $), but that has to be balanced against the bonus points you lose by missing out on offers such as this (assuming 1 point per $, you'd have to spend $75,000 just to match this bonus, a spend which would allow you to churn through 25 different cards assuming all $3K min spend, and if we assume that each of those cards gave 60K points at a minimum, that would equal 1.5 million QFF points, enough to travel RTW in business class 4.7 times). I don't get it. It is definitely NOT free, it has an opportunity cost, as this demonstrates. If it was me, I'd ditch that "free" card, replace with something basic and no annual fee and low limit (e.g. Coles MC with $2000 limit, or ME Frank with $1000 limit, and so forth), or a debit card, and then be able to take advantage of the Westpac offers such as this (or hold out for the Altitude Black offers that are usually ~90K QFF bonus with no or $50 annual fee). But I'm prepared to do the faffing about, maybe you're not, and if so I completely understand that (time and mental effort definitely have value).

          • @nickj: Yea. Slightly different situation in our household. Anyway. Not worth the trouble to cancel the main card we use.

      • Just closed ANZ Platinum after receiving 60K Qantas points, this offer is just in time

  • Offer shows in my app, and I had an Altitude Black card until August this year. According to T&C, not eligible.

    • well you're eligible for everything except the bonus points :P

  • +1

When a similar Westpac no fee deal was posted it was taken down in a short time. I went with the useless bank named St. George instead. If you are keen get on board quick !

  • Going to be hard to hit the spending limit, I'm spending peanuts

    • +12

Buy the peanuts with this card.

    • I'm jealous. It easy with a family to reach the spending limit, even managed to do so during the April/May lockdown. But some suggestions that you can use, even if you're a single person who buys almost nothing and who can exist on one lettuce leaf per day: Prepay electricity and gas bills. Prepay private health insurance. Buy woolies egift cards.

    • +1

Council rates, car rego, car insurance, home & content insurance, car servicing, water, gas… Surely there's a couple of thousand there? Was gonna include electricity, but I'm actually making money from solar on a net basis…

    • +1

Not when the kids want new Xbox or PS5 and daddy wants a RTX3080 or big Navi GPU for xmas!

      • Xiaomi monitor as new currency of ozb now, not eneloop

    • Woollies gift card, can't really go wrong unless you don't need to eat again in like forever.

  • I saw the offer in my app yesterday and applied. Got approved today.

The promo is very short-lived, as I have learnt from a previous offer which I sat on before it disappeared (Black card, 100k Qantas points, 1st year annual fee $250 waived).

Not making the same mistake again, and glad they approved so quickly.

  • This deal made my day :) the link didn't work for me, I had to log in and go to credit card and from there I found the offer.

    • thanks mate, thought i wasn't eligable as it wasn't in my offers page. much appreciated

      • actually that didn't work after submitting it.

        • same seems broken I ll try later on

          • +1

@Gooddeal21: ended up calling and applying over the phone as I kept getting that error.

            • +1

@krimovtartar: Thank you, I ended up using Edge to try, same thing but then I hit save later and then confirm and then it went through now waiting.

  • +2

What is better, Qantas or altitude points?

    • +1

Don't like the CEO, but gotta say Qantas points are far better

      • +1

Even with the $50 ongoing rewards points?

        • 75k points are (ideally) worth at least $750 (with a conservative valuation of 1c/point for flight redemptions). It will be slightly lower - 0.6-0.8c per point on store purchases/gift card/hotel redemptions, etc… but still easily a good deal from a "worth it" perspective.

    • +2

Complicated question, answer depends on how you want to spend it, because those two points programs let you buy different things.
But if you had equal use for both programs, then I would refer you to https://www.pointhacks.com.au/rewards-points-valuations/ , which values Westpac Altitude Rewards at 0.5 cents per point. Unfortunately their airlines point valuation data is corrupted (gah - I have left them a comment about this, hopefully they fix it), but generally Qantas points are valued at 1.0 to 1.6 cents per point, depending who you ask. I THINK this page used to value Qantas points at 1.6 cents per point. Personally, I use 1.2 cents per point as my guideline. Private/black market point sales have gone down to 0.85 to 1.0 cents per point during COVID (desperate sellers, reduced demand, same supply), but most of those transactions appear to have happened at 1.0 cent per point. So let's use 1.0 cent per point, as a really rather conservative valuation. So:
      Westpac Altitude: 0.5 cents per point * 100,000 points = 50000 cents = $500
      QFF points: 1.0 cents per point * 75,000 points = 75000 cents = $750

    • +2

pre covid, I would say Qantas but now I'm not so sure…

  • Thanks OP!

  • I'd like to see a pole on how many qantas points people in this forum have. I've churned about 6 credit cards since 2018 after hearing about Oz bargain website. Currently sitting at ~400k points. Have use some of the points for vouchers;etc.

    • +14

*poll. You'll have to ask a bit nicer to see people's "poles"

    • 600k after this!

    • 500k, combined for me and the wife. Started churning cards last year lol! This should add another 75k if I get approved before they take it out sooner than originally published

    • +2
    • +1

Nearly 2 million. I’ve switched from “big bonus with paid fees”, to more these 60-75k bonuses with < $100 fees. Hopefully they don’t go broke or devalue the points too much!

    • Last year spent approx 400K on 2 returned trips to VN - one flight with Business class.

About 300K left - and few Q lounge passes going to expired soon :(

    • 600k for the missus and I, 675k if I decide to get this…

  • Any Black deals coming up soon?

    • Earn 150,000 bonus Altitude points (or 120,000 Qantas points) when you spend $4,000 or more on eligible purchases on a new Altitude Black credit card within 90 days of new card approval

This sounds pretty good to me.… Except for the $250 annual fee I guess

      • $1500 in points less $250 cold hard cash. Depends on people. I am a cash kind of person.

        • now there's a fee free deal

      • This sucks, sad story indeed. I am a Premier Advantage Package (PAP) customer.

I applied for Altitude Platinum card when this offer was on in Oct. It was advertised as no annual fee for the first year.

Then when I applied for another Altitude Black Qantas card with this offer -> https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/580190 . I had some large spending coming in. Now, I am charged with a $250 annual fee on the Black card. Rang the home loan specialist center as advised on chart and they say that I can only have one card on the profile and hence need to pay fee on the other. I said since the 1st credit card was on another offer and was open to all, what benefit I get being on PAP ?!! I couldn't get a satisfactory answer- only stock answer that " sorry, you can only have one no-annual-fee credit card on PAP offer" ..

So, basically being Westpac customer with PAP sucks as it limits you down to only one product.

  • +1

Closed mine in July 2019, still have a Westpac login, awesome! This will take me past my goal of 2x RTW business class tickets for our honeymoon next year, thanks OP!

  • Is there a website where I can look up how many points you need for which flight?

  • I have an active online log-in with no bank account associate with it and I can see the offer when I log in, does this mean I am eligible or should I be creating a bank account.

    • +3

Had a chat with Westpac chat online and they have advised i am eligible.

    • I also have active log-in with no bank account.
I do not see the CC offer. Looks targetted

      • agreed, i think i saw some comments above that this offer is targeted.

      • I also have an account that I have found I can still log into. It shows my previous Westpac credit cards in the Closed Statements section, 2 of them closed in 2016 and 2018 and a Savings Account I used last year to get the $50 which was also closed.

I saw the offer by going into Products>Credit Cards>Altitude Platinum without issue..

  • How do we check whether we are eligible? Will this be in the Offers tab of Westpac online banking?

  • +2

Thanks OP! $0 Fee in 1st Year deals are the best!

First time churner here. Just wondering what's everyone's advice on the best time to cancel your cards once you received the bonus points.

Should I wait till it's almost close to the renewal date?

Also what's are the best excuses you have used?

Here are the cards that I currently hold, all which I have met the minimum spend:
ANZ Platinum - Bonus Points received (Renewal due Mar 2021)
St George Amplify Platinum - Bonus Points received (Renewal due May 2021)
AMEX Qantas Premium - Bonus Points not received yet (Renewal due Sep 2021)

    • +2

I had a similar phase as you where I still kept the cards after receiving the bonus points. My advice is cancel the cards once you receive the bonus points, and just keep one active, consider factors like what's the point per dollar earning rate, and credit card benefits (most are the same, but for example ANZ has complimentary hire car rental excess which I like)

You can cancel credit cards online now so no need for excuses, even if they call you just be upfront and say you were in it for bonus points, or to sound nice you are consolidating your credit cards so that it is easier to keep track.

    • +1

Cancel the second you have got the bonus points showing in QFF (i.e. cancel the ANZ plat and St George plat now). That restarts the 12 month exclusion period ASAP. Cancel online, all banks need to offer this now. Just put down "I don't need the card any more" if they ask (it's none of their business why you don't want the card any more, you do not need to worry about justifying why you no longer want their services). If you choose to call them, always be polite, and if they ask, just say "I don't need it any more", and if they ask for more information, like a politician just keep repeating "I don't need it any more" (if you get bored, you can try varying the emphasis for LOLs, e.g. "I DON'T need it any more", "I don't need IT any more"), until they get they memo and move on. If you get really really bored, you can always try "well, how many extra bonus points are you offering me to stay?". Seriously though, don't even bother wasting your time - just close them online.

    • +1

ASAP, but make sure you have a debit or one low amount as a backup.

I had a phase where randomly I suddenly got declined a few times in a row, so had no cards for a few months!

Everything had been successful before and since, so no idea why I had just this little patch of declines (all cards paid off monthly etc).

    • Thanks guys for your advice. I shall cancel them online then. :)

  • any casual employees with stable income in the past 6-8 months? did you apply and get approved?

i applied for amex's credit card (no fee, credit limit = 2k), got a rejection letter stating "concerns over my ability to repay".

Now this westpac card rejected me outright without any explanation….

    • Have you checked your credit score recently? Maybe there's something unknown/forgotten to you that has hit your score?

      • credit savvy - 702

    • I was also rejected outright - I called and they weren't able to give me an explanation why

Absolute joke and waste of time

    • Yeah, after 3 years of churning and a change of job from permanent to full time contract i think the banks have become a bit cautious.

Good credit score, 6 figure salary with only 1 other credit card seem to mean nothing if you've only been with your employer for 6 months and on a contract. i think banks may be cracking down a bit.

  • Anyone got this:

    We are sorry
We seem to be experiencing problems. Please try later again
The credit card application form is currently unavailable. We apologise for any inconvenience caused.

    • I got the same after putting in the SMS security code.
Now it says I can't put in another application while there is one in progress.

    • Don't bother - you will probably just get auto-rejected like me
