Need Help Buying a Budget TV for PS5 - Budget $299-$599

Hello OzBargain.

I did some searching before making this thread. I noticed many of the threads relating to buying a TV for the upcoming PS5 were for TVs over $700+ dollars and for the most optimal experience. I however, only need a specific TV for a specific niche need. My room is very small and my current 5+ year old 32 inch Dicksmith LED TV that is 1080p has finally started to wane and retire from use with my PS3/PS4, had a good run.

I have not purchased a TV since owning this one, probably since 2015. I noticed lots of the cheaper TVs now (paid $200 for the Dicksmith one at the time) only are 720p resolution now instead of 1080p and use cheaper components and have many issues relating to image quality, poor sound, etc etc.

I wanted to ask the community here on helping me select a TV which would function in a very small room where I would be almost a meter or so away from it. An ideal size for me would be 32 inch to 40 inch. Anything larger would be too big and anything smaller would be too small etc.

But I also want to buy a TV that has been made relatively recently, has updated support for many video and audio formats, maybe has HMDI 2.1 support or other more modern features. Has decent/acceptable quality image and good sound instead of awful sound.

I don't need one of those Android Smart TVs with built in Netflix and Chromcast etc, I have a Chromecast. Although if a TV has it and is affordable, I don't mind (can sell the Chromecast to someone else).

I basically need a good TV that will go well with the PS5 Console as well as my older consoles (many different consoles). So ideally a TV with at least 3 HDMI ports, USB support.

Now the big question was whether to get another 1080p TV or make the jump to 4K. I noticed a lot of the lower end sub $600-700 4K TVs though left a lot to be desired in terms of overall quality and how long they last. I'll let you decide.

I looked at many different Aussie dealers and websites, and I just see a lot of TVs with mixed reviews, some with awful reviews, some with 1 review from a guy named Bob who says its the best TV he ever bought (lol).

Please help me find a TV for my needs. Appreciate it if you read this poorly formatted wall of text and can help me out.

Reality check: You're not going to get anything decent for that money to make the most of next-gen consoles so it's irrelevant really. Certainly not a decent HDR panel or 120 FPS HDMI 2.1 TV.

You'll be looking a low range Chinese brand TVs so pick the best 4K one you can find.

    • Yeah, I'd agree. Get the best 4K TV you can afford. Buy on a sale day, like Black Friday or Boxing Day.

For those who want HDMI 2.1 and 120 fps (frames per second), the cheapest is probably Sony's X9000H series, but even that will be too expensive for you. The X9000H series will get the fast framerate via a firmware upgrade.

The PS5 and Xbox-X run in 4K at 120fps (sometimes referred to as 120Hz.) The consoles will also work with lesser TVs, but without optimum performance.

Ideally, input lag needs to be 25ms or lower. Anything more than 50ms is bad. A refresh rate of 120 would be good.

Could also look at a 32" 4K monitor instead of a tv. Something like this: https://www.scorptec.com.au/product/Monitors/25plus-inch/850…

I'm sure there's a few that will fit your price range.

Don't even bother getting a PS5 if that's your budget for a TV.

750 for PS5 you might want to get a good tv then….

Why would you get a shitty TV to play PS5 on? Does not make any sense…

For that budget, I would STRONGLY suggest a 32" 4K monitor for your room (this will be my setup soon). You can hook it up to both your PC and PS5. Like Hybroid said, you'll only be able to get a cheap Chinese knock-off TV otherwise. With all the streaming services available now, there's no need for digital TV functionality in 2020.

  • Unless you really think you'll enjoy PS5 exclusives (in which case, wait), I don't know why you'd buy a PS5 then budget 1/2 that on a TV. It's completely wasted. You won't get HDMI 2.1 in that budget, you won't get a good picture, and forget about 'good' sound from inbuilt speakers.

  • I bought a TCL a few years ago. Possibly have a look at a QUHD 4K TV. Im no tech guy but I bought one a few years ago and quality and performance is quite good for the price tag…just as long as you can tolerate a TV taking 40 seconds to turn on.
As I said its not the best you will ever get but its definitely good value for the price. I think you can get a 43" for about $650-700. Read some reviews and go and have a look in store to see if its right for you :)

  • Not a TV but it suit your budget.

Playing Ghost of Tsushima on it, looks fine to me. Has only 2 HDMI and 1 DP, 4K 60hz, HDR.

  • I got the Hisense S7 which has zoned backlighting and it looks just fine, perfectly fine. Compared to the average budget 4K tv it looks a million times better. Very happy with it, though its only 55 inches. Ive decided every tv I ever buy will have to be better than the last, so if I can't afford a better one then I will need to use this one for years until I can afford a holographic quantum dot tv or whatever.

  • Guys, How about Gigabyte G27Q, looks pretty sharp, 144hz refresh rate with a 1440p display.

Locking yourself in a tiny dark little room and playing games I have to consider giving this a neg purely for the health reasons and danger to the community.

Gaming purposes you need a "monitor" with a higher refresh rate and not a television, you need to have a specific tool for a specific purpose.

    • Low IQ. For years, consoles couldn't push out those refresh rates, so those 120Hz+ panels were wasted on them. Secondly, with this new gen launch, new TVs from the likes of LG can indeed support higher refresh, VRR, etc. with HDMI 2.1. By your logic, no one would be playing games in their living room.
