I have a 3rd gen AppleTV connected to a BenQ 1080p projector via a Yamaha amp. Apart from loading apps/games, any advantages in getting the 4K ATV?
The 4K is currently cheaper, faster than the 1080
I have exactly the same setup and I hung out for ages with the Apple TV 3rd gen but bought 4K model a month ago.
The 4K is brilliant. Being able to load different apps is great and iView will run and much more you can’t get on 3rd gen.
Music app is better if you’re running Apple Music. Can access all music and music videos rather than just stuff you’ve bought on iTunes.
Remote is much better and using Siri to launch apps or just asking to find a program works well. It then shows you where to find it on any of the streaming services.
I can control it to some extent with my Homepod (pause, rewind 30 seconds etc.)
I think it was really worth the upgrade and I waited a long time.

I'm in the same boat and resisted for years, but what drove me to buy one was Zwift (indoor cycling game) which has a native Apple TV app (rather than casting), freeing up your phone/ipad to be a second screen to run the companion app. It also plays very, very nicely with Airpods if you have them - pairing on startup if you're close by.
But that remote… ugh. The touchpad is horrible (you navigate menus like a drunk), the buttons are indistinguishable, and I had to put a case on it to be able to quickly tell the remote orientation when distracted. This is a great price for a good set-top-box, but I will wait for the new one in the hope that the remote is better. I'm also hopeful that the new one will have more than 3 bluetooth channels, as there are only two user accessible (remote takes one) and the number of sensors for indoor cycling are proliferating (e.g. they now have bluetooth steering sensors).
For normal use, it has all the obvious services and there's Apple original content, which is OK for free (first year), but I I wouldn't pay for it. The Apple menu unifies all the streaming content (FTA catchups, netflix, prime etc) to make finding shows easier too. I don't like it, as I find it cluttered when looking for their original content, but for my wife, who can't remember which service has which shows, it has been great.
Is there a workaround to get Kodi running with the Foxtel Go add on on the ATV? I have a Vodafone TV but wondering whether the Apple would give a smoother experience with Kodi.
Side load using Xcode every 7 days or jailbreak. If it’s on iOS 14 that will require a $50 breakout cable and soldering. If it’s on iOS 13 you can jailbreak using uncover.

if you have homepod its good but when the atv goes to sleep, it disconnects the homepod and you have to go to settings again.
I currently have Xbox one S that I use to play and stream 4K content and I have Vodafone TV as well connected to older TV in bedroom as I needed an antenna port. Very tempted to buy Apple TV at this price but I am not sure what ATV has to offer that Xbox can't do.
I currently have an Android phone but thinking to switching to Apple later this year so try something different but still not sure what ATV has to offer over Xbox.

3) apple music subscription control (without casting from phone)
4) watch your apple iMovies or iTV (without casting from phone)

note: I had a ton of movies from apple iTunes. so every apple TV allows my home (or other homes to, to access my TV and apple music, but not my personal stuff when I logged into the apple TV)

Buy a Premium High Speed 4K cable. Not all HDMI cables are the same and I have had issues with some of the 4K cables previously e.g. the screen going black or screen flickering etc.
Noob question, what it does and why so many are interested
It's just a sleek interface for your streaming services. The remote is like a laser pointer for your screen so you can select Netflix, stan, SBS on demand etc. easily. It's useful if you don't have a smart tv, or if your smart tv has a clunky unintuitive interface that frustrates the crap out of you!
I have owned one of these in the 32gb model for a couple of years now - I love it. It works perfectly - unless you plan on playing some fancy new games on it there is no need to wait for a new faster model. I paid about $220, $159 is a great deal.
Price just corrected for the 32Gb model. Now both models have disappeared from the site.

Just tried to pick up from JB North Sydney - lady at counter did the whole acting surprised thing (she was a bad actor) and said we can't honour them as it was a pricing error at their end. Not sure if threaten to escalate to fair trading if that will be any use? What are the consumer rights in this situation?
