Looking to build my first PC, budget is around the $1k mark. I've asked a lot of forum posts in the past to help me sort out which is the best combination of parts and I think I've hit the sweet spot for components which will give enough performance.

Will be doing 1080p gaming on relatively new or demanding titles like GTA V and Hitman/2 , but majority would be e-sports like Rocket League, CSGO etc…

Please let me know what you think of it, comments and criticism encouraged.

Thanks!

    AMD!!!

  • 450W power supply sufficient for GTX 1660 Super??

    • seems sufficient enough… might change it though since I might upgrade sooner or later

    Where's the RGB??

    • haha, this is an "under-the-table" PC. I've got a little shelf underneath my desk so it can be stowed away. Besides I've got LED lighting on my mechanical keyboard, and as a ceiling light :P

For another $70 bucks or so I'd chuck in a 2TB HDD just for that extra storage.

    Other than that, sensible build.

I'd still go AMD though :P

this is what a budget build should look like, personally i would not spend so much on the gpu as that is a fast depreciating asset otherwise brilliant work.

Looks like a good build. Though if you're just using it for 1080p gaming, you could probably drop down the CPU to an AMD 3100 CPU + MB and save the cash or spend it on another HDD. I have the 1660 super and it runs everything very smoothly 60fps+ on high or ultra settings.

Looks pretty good. You'll probably get better value for money getting an AMD processor but the i5 is still really good. If I was you I'd spend a little bit more and put a 650w PSU and a 2tb HDD in the PC.

  • I assume you already have a monitor, keyboard and mouse?

Also, is it better to get a smaller m.2 (eg 256gb) for windows 10 and a couple of your favourite games and put the savings towards a 2tb HDD?

    • Yes, I'm interested to know with which model monitor you're pairing this budget beastie! Anything above 60fps? Adaptive sync?

      • haha… it's a Samsung 24" Curved Monitor (60Hz), but I might upgrade to the Dell 1080p 144Hz that goes on sale every so often

    • Yes to all of those. But I don't think I'll be downloading more than 10 or so games to play at any given time, so there really isn't any need for a HDD

  • Do you prefer brand new, otw a 1080/ti system could sometimes be found for $1000

    • interesting… but I wanted to pick something that would fit in that specific case

      • wait i'm pretty sure that motherboard won't fit in the case, it's a mATX board and the case only support mITX I think

        • I think it's the other way around, just did a little search and mATX will fit

          • @avgbowlofpho: nah, I had a quick read, the motherboard won't fit in the case it's too tall and the stand-off won't line up, maybe be possible if you drill some holes but i'm not too sure

            • @ln28909: yeah, you are right.. thanks for pointing that out for me!

Consider swapping the Crucial P1 which uses QLC Flash for a TLC Flash ssd like Kingston A2000 (same price in many places) which is more durable and will write at faster speeds for longer (google QLC vs TLC), otherwise good build 👍
Edit: The PSU could also be upgraded to an Aerocool AERO 550w sold at Centre Com for $59 for 80+ and $69 for 80+ Bronze. I plan on using one in my build as they have black cables and people report that MWE PSUs have coil whine which I don’t rly want, though it can affect any PSU.

    • awesome, thanks for the tip!

  • Check out some benchmark's and do some research but you should probably go with two sticks of ram rather than one.

And I agree with daniel replace the P1 with the A2000

  • Don't skim on the PSU. Always get more than you need for future proofing. Go for 650W, only about $10 more.

  • Do you already have a monitor or are you going to hook to an existing fhd TV?

    • +1

nah I already have a monitor, although it is 60Hz….

      • I've been using a 43 in hdr 4k TV but sadly only runs at 60 hz whether 4k or FHD not good for eyes, also an asus vp 27 @FHD still only runs @60 … waiting on a dell curved 27" to arrive from recent sales checked with dell it runs 1920 x1080 @75 so will be much better

I'm thinking of making the upgrade to a 144Hz screen when I get the new build, seems like it'll be much better than the 60Hz I have already

  • Not being rude but there was a 2070 system here for 1200

I think you can do better and with the newer AMD gpus abt to drop, it would be wise to hold off till they do.

    • yeah i saw that… so tempting! might even hold out to see if they do that one again and I'll bite

      • Please do hold off, you are so close to Xmas sales that you might get buyer's remorse, since you do have a budget you would be better off getting best perf for $.
Everything they had in that pc was of quality too, and you get local warranty.
There is nothing wrong with your build, just that you can get more for your money imo.
AMD is going to disrupt the $ of CPUs and GPUs soon, so if it's not a crucial purchase and you can hold off, it could possibly be a good payoff for you.

        • +1

Yeah definitely, I'm honestly in no rush, but this is a rough idea of something I would want. Hopefully with all of the Christmas sales I might even be able to fit in a 2060S…

          • @avgbowlofpho: I just bought a 2060 after tossing up between it and a 1660 Ti. Definitely glad I paid the bit extra for it; it runs like butter on all the things I've thrown at it so far, and will hopefully be set for all the ray tracing goodness as the games start to support it over the next few years. Good build, Intel all the way!

            • @FunkyHoratio: That's super great to hear, might change it for that little extra performance boost

  • I'd check TechYesCity on youtube before pulling the trigger on that build. Much better bang for buck budget PC's on that channel. Aussie too.

    • yeah…. it's not bad! it's just the parts he uses are ultra-budget, whereas i'm looking for some parts which would last me a bit. If anything, I'm more of a Optimum Tech guy, also Aussie

      • Skimping on parts that don't benefit gaming is what he does. I think his sub 1k build uses a RX 580
