Great news! Cheap lobster for us all Australians.

Instead of sending it all to China for $180 a kg.

    • +4

Unfortunately, Australian Lobsters are still very expensive for Australian consumers :( even though they have reduced export to other countries
These ones are from Monterey Bay, California

      • +2

Oh really? That sucks! :( Thought they were from Aussie.

I guess no wonder aussie suppliers send them to China. They get $180 PER KG!
        It's like the golden goose!

Too bad they have "metals in them" as said by China Customs and RIP to those Lobsters sitting on the tarmac.
Poor Aussie workers who fished them and collected them.

I wonder if these aussie workers are willing to reduce their price and be comeditive in their Australian market instead of us having to IMPORT from USA.

        • +1

          You are exactly right!

Unfortunately, Countries like China with poor waters and deep pockets will entice Australian producers to make more money abroad with there products.

Trade deals and conflict with China have caused a lot of tension with all producers, it's just unfortunate that the lobsters are not like wine and can sit on the tarmac until a resolution is come to by both governments

Unfortunately, they see more benefit in letting the lobsters grow so they can sell larger crays for more money

          • +1

@Melb Seafood Market: 100% The lobsters on the tarmac are all dead by now, and China Customs dont care.
DOA I guess return to sender.
This lobster has "metal in it" bs is just bs.

Again the Aussie suppliers are just greedy and trying to make a buck as much as possible and now look what has happened. Play with the devil and get fire.

Would be interesting to know if Aussie supplies are willing to sell and be competitive for all Australians or not. By allowing places like yourself to sell their lobsters instead of sending to China, since they cant now.

Profit profit profit is all they see.
90% of Australian Lobster is sent to China.

            • @Turd: Yeah its all bs , our government should
say its going to reclaim that airport in perth and the port up the top end which never should have been leased to them in the first place.

            • @Turd: Ameen brother. Same like housing market. I thought ownership should be with those who permanently live locally, not temporary residents.

      • so where are the australian lobster? you guys dont stock/sell them?

        • +1

90% of aussie stock goes to China, so that 10% is prob whats left and prob like $150/kg. Whose gonna buy?

        • We stock

But as mentioned they are at around $140-$150/kg - Minimum lobster weighing 2-3kg, not much interest from consumers to pay the amount so allocation is set to restaurants. As you can get 10kg for nearly the same price as one medium size Lobster

Ooh delivery to Mornington. That's good to know.

    • We are looking into being able to increase our delivery rate from one day a week to hopefully two days a week soon

      • The website says the Mornington Peninsula but Mornington isn't in the A-Z list. Gathering that's a mistake?

And at the moment it's just Wednesdays yeah? Could get delivered on December 23rd to have for Chrissy, I reckon. Might be handy.

        • +1

Sorry yes, that would be correct.
I will add it to the list, but yes the Mornington delivery day is Wednesday at the moment.

For Christmas, our delivery days are as followed (Pre-order for 24th is up as well)

23rd Dec Wednesday - Metro Melb, Greater Melb, Geelong, Ballarat, Bendigo, Mornington Peninsula, Gippsland
24th Dec Thursday - Metro Melb, Greater Melb, Geelong, Surfcoast, Ballarat, Bendigo, Mornington Peninsula, Shepparton, Yarra Valley

HI Melbourne Seafood Market, are you able to advise where the baby octopus is from?

Used these guys before and great service. Ordered about 10pm the night before and was delivered by 9am the following day.

  • Hello

I believe this stock we have in at the moment is sourced from the Indian Sea between Western Australia and the Sunda Islands

Thank you for your praise :D We still offer next day delivery for Melbourne deliveries up until midnight the night before and do our best to get it to you as early as we can.

  • Can you please advise where the Golden Pomfret is from?

    • The Golden Pomfret is sourced from the Indian Ocean around Africa - Madagascar to be more precise

Would be nice if you can list country where the it comes from in your listing. Where it is frozen or not.
I ordered from you few months ago and expecting some fresh Aussie scallop but got frozen one and probably not from Australia, so bin half of it as taste isn't as I expected.

Thank you for your input and I will let the website team know.

In regards to fresh and frozen, we have our market-fresh items listed here and our Australian Products here. You will find a lot of misconceptions with the definition of fresh seafood as a lot of trawlers especially in Australia due to regulations and industry practice that as trawlers can be out at sea for a while they will snap freeze and package their catch on the boats. For Example, 90% of fresh prawns sold in Butchers, seafood shops and grocery shops have been defrosted (for your convenience) and sold to you as 'fresh' and put back and forth from the fridge to display until sold or go off.

Fresh fish, mussels, Oysters etc are a different story and we get those in every morning to order so that it is as fresh as it can be :)

I ordered $120 worth in July. Sashimi Grade Salmon Fillets, marinara and hot smoked salmon bits. They delivered smoked salmon bits and I had to call to find out that the hot smoked salmon was out of stock and they substituted. The smoked salmon bits were so salty I had to throw them out even after soaking in milk and making a dip with cream cheese to dilute it. The marinara was frozen and very small pieces, worse quality then you get in Colesworth. The salmon fillet was very fresh and good quality. So I think if you are ordering fresh fish you will be happy the other items prehaps not so much.

    • Hello

Thank you for your input, can you please let us know your order number and we can look into your order for you.

In regards to the smoked salmon bits, I believe you are talking about are the offcuts to the Huon smoked Salmon we sell and can't recall ever running out as we also don't stock any hot smoked salmon just Trout, and the Huon Method do not use a brine or salt in their products unless for Gravalax. In regards to your marinara when they snap freeze mussel meat, clam meat, fish bits and calamari it shrinks but as it defrosts it expands compared to normal freezing methods, and the quality would be far more superior to Coles as we sell it to most restaurants in Melbourne.

        Thank you for responding.
        Order No. 10930. Invoice #0000946 14 July.
The item out of stock was Hot Smoked Salmon Bits (1kg) Price: $27.90, and the smoked Salmon offcuts was the item given to me, without consultation or even advise on the invoice or delivery. I then emailed about the missing item and received a reply from Casey Boardman with an apology. The salmon bits were inedible and I regularly have that exact product from Woolworths and the Huon salmon slices and they are not that salty.
Extract from order. (I would attach a pic but do not know how)

Product or Service Price Quantity Line Total
        Hot Smoked Salmon Bits (1kg) A$27.90 1 A$27.90

Could you please confirm, on this post that you do sell this item and that I purchased it. Thank you.

        • Hello

Unfortunately, I can't find anything to support or deny the mistake or replacement. So what I will do as I can't find anything, is I will just issue a refund on that item for you though :)

You should receive an email shortly of this refund

          • @Melb Seafood Market: Thank you. I have sent a copy of the email I received from Casey Boardman <[email protected]>
Sent: Wednesday, 15 July 2020 2:43 PM, to the same email.
Where he/she apologises for the item being out of stock and that it was substituted. Tell me if you would like me to send it to another email. I do appreciate you taking action to compensate me as I merely wished to give feedback to the community.

            • @Yola: Nice feedback seems they take the fish that John West rejects . Next !

              • @popsiee: To be fair, as I said the salmon fillet was very good.
