Yes, it should be a decent upgrade in every aspect. Much better camera, much larger, sharper screen, better processor, fast charging and wireless charging, and so on.

    • do you like Apple?
if you do save money and get the newer iphone SE
      if you don't, buy this

    • If you like the Apple experience why not go with the new iPhone SE 2020? Cheaper though with slightly lower specs. If you're fedup with Apple and want to move to Android, yea this is a pretty decent phone and with this promotion a pretty good deal.

The other Android option is LG velvet 5g with similar specs for about $780 or so.

  • Yes, finally come down to more reasonable price. Combined with 10% discount GC that's better.

  • +2

My pixel 3xl still going strong- will wait till that stuffs up and hopefuly get replaced with a new model again!

Wonder what other deals are on at JB tomorrow, was looking at getting a Samsung soundbar (I don't think it will get cheaper than the corporate quote I've got)

  • +1

Can we use discounted gift cards to bring the price down further?

    • I had the same doubt. I checked the original deal and under exclusion :-

      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/579742

Excludes: Apple Products, Games Consoles, Microsoft branded Xbox accessories and games, Dyson, Mobile Contracts, Miele & Asko agency products, Dell Built to Order, Pre-Paid Cards & Gift Cards, Pre-Orders, Extended Warranties, & Delivery. Coupon cannot be used in conjunction with any other coupon offers

Mod: We aren't sure if this will be targeted or not.

      • +1

I would assume that "Pre-paid Cards & Gift Cards" exclusion refers to puchasing GC with this discount as opposed to using giftcards for payment with this deal.

I don't see how they could deny people from using gift cards to make payment.

        • Yes, I got that wrong. Thanks for clarifying. Hopefully giftcards should work then.

        • +3

I bought it using e-gift cards at 5% off. So came down to $844.65

          • @ozbloke2: Bingo. I did the exact same today with 5% off JB gift cards through Suncorp Benefits, for a total price that you noted.

    • Yes you can. I just used 2 e-gift cards and ordered it, total cost $862.44

  • I returned mine but i purchased from google. The screen was nice. Battery was bad (i normally get 2 days out of a phone). Camera shots weren't that great. I find my Huawei Mate 20 which is about 2.5 years old outshone this phone. Which is sad! If anyone gets this and needs a cover and some screen protectors let me know. They will just sit at home otherwise!

    • +2

Unfortunate to read that your battery was bad. I've been finding mine to be outstanding. Easily 5hrs SoT and lasting over a day (although I charge every night).

I'll PM you regarding case and protector.
Edit: looks like I can't PM you?

I just fixed a deal to buy Samsung S10e from Gumtree for $300 (Dual sim, HK version, Mint condition). not sure if this phone is any better compared to s10e since the looks and specs are almost identical. dont really care abt updates since s10e will support android 11 later.

Upgrading from Galaxy S5 (running Android 6.0.0)after many years. since I heard they will stop support soon for older devices decided its time for upgrade.

  • Any recommendations for a minimal/slim case for this?

    • the fabric one from google, very nice feel

    • +1

      How about Spigen?

    • The Pela cases are incredible. Feels so nice, very protective and environmentally friendly.

  • I never had to return phones before but every time I used google pixel i had to return. Pixel 2 and 4.

I give credit for them for very good in-phone tech support though.

I like the phone not having bloatware but for some reason this is also the phone that has ever froze on me and it could be slow at times. Not sure why.

  • +4

Waiting on a deal on pixel 4a 5g. It has dual sim support, headphone jack decent camera and lacks higher refresh rate, less ram and not water resistant.

    • Are you sure about the Dual SIM? GSMARENA has: "Nano-SIM and/or eSIM"

That's not the same, won't work for me. Genuine dual SIM saves me ~$100 a year.

      • Yes I think so.
One sim in slot and another one e-sim?

        • Yes, one real, one eSIM. eSIM is only available on post-paid plans.

That means I can't run one prepaid long life (i.e. Vodafone 365) for my main number and another prepaid from a Kogan/Amaysim for all the data I need. I spend about $50 a year all up on mobile plans…

          • @team teri: Great choice.
Are there many options available for physical dual sim slot?

            • @Modesty: Most of the Xiaomi / OnePlus / Nokia are physical dual SIM.

  • +2

I have bought every Nexus/Pixel since the Nexus 5, but for the first year I won't be buying a new Pixel, as the Pixel 5 would be a downgrade from my Pixel 4XL.
I love the idea of Pixel going sub-premium on everything except the camera, I don't need the latest Snapdragon 865 CPU as I don't 3D game or video edit.
I don't want to pay extra for a fancy glass body as I put it into a case anyhow. So yeah this phone seems ideal, premium camera, no bloatware,
first for software updates and about $300 cheaper than last year. I look forward to paying a lot less for a Pixel 6.

  • +2

Anyone got the JB Hi-Fi discount email yet?

  • +2

Had the Pixel 5 for a couple weeks now. It works well for the most part and is a good improvement over my dying Pixel 2XL, even with the mid-tier processor.

However if you wanted to have 5G enabled, the battery life is quite abysmal. I was barely getting 4 hours screen time with basic usage using messenger apps and casual browsing. No gaming, very little Youtube/videos watched as well… Disabled 5G and keeping it on 4G allowed me to get down to 75-80% screentime with 2 hours usage, as opposed to 50%. I have contacted Google support about this and they said I could get a replacement for free, but will be 2-3 weeks since they have to wait to receive my phone first…

Not sure if it is worth it for me to return for a new phone which may have the same 'issue'. I know 5G is supposed to be a battery drain but didn't realise just how much it could be. YMMV of course.

  • +1

Does anyone know if Pixel 5 supports VoLTE and VoWiFi? I'm in a area where I get bad reception and that would be important for me to have.

    • +2

Yes, its listed under wi-fi calling to route either cellular or wifi network for voice.
Make sure the telco supports it, this phone I have is with Telstra and it works.

  • +1

coming from a P20 Pro is this a good option for video?

  • +1

Worth the upgrade over the Pixel 4?

    • +1

Pixel 4 xl user, would also like to know.

      • +1

The wide angle lens is nice. Otherwise I would say no.

  • I just want a phone that I can plan Genshin Impact on max specs without needing to wear oven mitts

    • do not buy a Pixel 5 if you want games on max quality

  • Was pondering getting the Samsung FE 5G. What are the main reasons why people would get Pixel 5 over this besides price point?

    • I hear OneUI is pretty good but after going from TouchWiz on my S6 to a Pixel 2 I swore I'd never go back.

    • +2

I sold my S20 FE after first week and am using the Pixel 5 now but my use case might be different to yours.

Firstly the S20 FE was plagued with touch screen issues at the time it was affecting scrolling and zooming as well as multitouch but after a few updates it seems to only affect multitouch and gaming now (still unusable for gaming but won't affect anything else). Additionally if you plan to game or do anything intensive (multitasking as well) on the FE you'll notice the temperatures climb faster and throttle down a lot - this doesn't happen on the Pixel 5 (also has 8gbs ram which is useful for multitasking)

Otherwise if you just use the FE for social media you'll likely not face any issues at all other than the minor 120hz down to 60hz throttle when your phone gets hot from charging or intense apps (like using the camera or gaming).

SoT when I was doing intense gaming and YouTube was about 6 hours on wifi.

The Pixel 5 never throttles for me it always stays smooth and seamless on 90hz and switches between apps really fast. SoT is about 8-9 hours on wifi.

Camera quality wasn't a big factor for me but night mode shots are a lot better than both the S20 FE and iPhone 12 for me.

    • +1

      My 2c:

Reasons to get a Pixel 5 - slightly better camera (S20 FE is better in some cases) and software experience.

Personally the poor Pixel 5 speaker was a dealbreaker for me, otherwise I would have bought one. Loving my S20 FE 5G (got it for $594)

      • +1

I probably should’ve gone for the etc deal on FE but that $594 deal was only for the 128gb with 6gb ram bersion. If there was a similar deal for the 8gb/256gb version i would jump on it straightaway. Probably not worth worrying about the storage as it has a slot for extra memory but the 2gb ram boost was really screaming out to me in terms of purchase preference.

        • Yeah fair enough I thought the same but 6GB is more than enough in practice. I multi task a lot and don't even use 4GB so the extra RAM is useless for me. I preferred the faster CPU/GPU/internal storage which affect performance far more.

      • Have you checked your screen for issues?

        • No, is there a diagnostic tool or something to test it? I havent encountered any issues using it

          • @Drpepper666: Look at this video:
            https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zpHZsz3RHJY

The key is to swipe one finger up while swiping one finger down, the screen very poorly handles multitouch and samsung is applying bandaid over bandaid fixes to cover it up, but ultimately, it's a hardware issue caused by a poor quality digitiser so there's only so much software patching can do.

            • @sp3ctr41: Yep definitely have this issue. It took a while to reproduce but after 10min or so I can reproduce it consistently in the touch test app to the point where I wouldn't feel like a (profanity) complaining about it in JB Hifi.

In day to day use I never noticed it (nobody swipes over their screen like that), but I can reproduce a similar issue in Google Maps when zooming with two fingers.

I'll try and return it but if I can't it's something I can live with, just a little disappointing as I expect the screen to work flawlessly.

NB: I don't have the latest software patch from today which is supposed to fix it. Any evidence it's a hardware issue?

              • @Drpepper666: It's been getting better. People are still having issues with pinching (for instance, zooming your camera) and especially having problems gaming (where that motion is quite common). For regular day to day use, the patches have masked the more common cases. You can definately return it if you wanted to, many have, it's a major manufacturing flaw.

                • @sp3ctr41: I can only reproduce the issue zooming in and out. However I have now reproduced it playing games. I tried COD with the "claw method" ie two fingers on right hand side so you can aim and shoot at the same time, and it's literally unplayable. Going to JB soon to ask for a refund, going to be adamant I don't want it sent for repair. Hopefully they have a display S20 FE so I can demonstrate the issue on that one too…

                  • @Drpepper666: Haha, sorry for ruining your experience with it. I'm the same boat as you now, really want the S20 FE but I'll wait until they address the issue with a hardware fix or move on to a new phone.

Let us know how it goes!

      • Wheres the deal for s20?

  • Opinions comparing it to OnePlus 8T?
    They both have similar pricing

  • +1

Has anyone received the promo in e-mail yet?

  • Glad I didn't buy when Google local guides had their promo. This deal is better, plus the extra 7% AGL rewards.

  • With a rumoured flagship device (Pixel 5XL or Pixel 6) to be launching in March 2021, Im kinda tempted to give this phone a skip and wait to see how the rumours play out. Worst case scenario I buy the Samsung Galaxy 20 FE or Pixel 5 at this price later down the track.

  • Coming from s8+, worth getting?

  • What's the consensus on the Pixel 5 vs Galaxy S20FE?

Esit: nvm. Saw the replies above.

  • If I got gift cards off Shopback, how quickly can I expect to get it?

I have access to agl rewards but it's probably too late to order gift cards from there at this point in time.

    • I ordered from nib rewards (5%) at 8am today and just arrived now.

  • +2

    Just bought. Works with GC.

    • +2

Same, used 2 giftcards. Instant through Suncorp (5%)

  • Lg velvet comes to $666.61.not a bad price. Same snapdragon 765g but with bigger screen n headphone socket

    • Pure google and updates with the pixel 5 are easily worth the extra $$

  • just bought it, thanks for the code. should be a nice upgrade from pixel 1, hopefully this one lasts 4+ year as well.

are people paying for the google drive storage for original quality? or don't bother.

    • +2

would not bother unless youre that anal about the photo quality (its pretty hard to notice the difference unless you look real hard)

  • +1

Case, screen protector and pixel using GC.

  • Thanks for the code, brought the Sorta Sage version online, hopefully, it can arrive according to the date mentioned. Upgrading from s7 which the battery totally died a couple of weeks ago.

  • Haha! Perfect - tried to get the new Pixel through Telstra this week and they stuffed the paperwork… Guess I'll get it at JB now :)

  • -1

I've just cracked my screen on my p30 pro but I just can't help but see this phone as a downgrade 😔

  • +1

Does anyone know if the price will come down further for Black Friday? I am looking to upgrade from a 3XL

  • +1

Wondering whether to get it at this price or wait for a better deal during black friday

  • Can't seem to buy it online. Says In Store Only. Am i missing something?

    • I was able to order one online last nigth, but still waiting for confirmation. Guess is they had too much orders to process, so changed this to in store only.

  • Got the Pixel 5 on 30/10/2020 from the JB Hi-Fi Telstra sign up deal $500 voucher (here: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/576973)

Walked into JB Hi-Fi North Sydney NSW today and asked for 14 day price guarantee on the phone.

Confirming the 14 day price guarantee is legit and they refunded the difference back to my card.

  • Got one, thanks!

Any suggestions for a case that has storage for a couple of cards?

  • Walked into a jbhifi after work and managed to pick up a Sorta Sage - was only expecting black because online had no stock in metro Brisbane but sales rep told me there was one in their store (guess it pays to visit the bricks and mortar!) They were also pretty oblivious to the fact that the singles code worked on pixel phones until i showed them a screenshot i took the night before of the code applied to the online cart.

Spent the morning at work trying to figure out how to qualify for a Suncorp Rewards account. Even signed up for a bank account (really only took 5mins like the website says). Then realised i had to have an insurance product then spent the rest of the morning trying to get our car CTP to link up but eventually gave up. Tossed up using the Shopback 3% but didn't want to risk it as I've never bought jbhifi gc before and didnt know if it was instant.

    • I got this on Wednesday using AGL 10% TCN GC, it's quite a great phone at $800 +$10 express shipping. Mine has no visible gap, I have checked thoroughly but haven't put it under microscope yet. The battery life is much better compared to my old Pixel 2 which only managed 4 hours SOT nowadays due to degraded battery, I managed to squeeze 7.5h SOT with relatively heavy usage. Overall reasonably happy at this price, but no way I would have paid $999 for it.

Hopefully the rumoured P5XL coming early next year will spot SD875 Lite (rumoured as well) and upgraded camera.

  • +2

For anyone still looking for one, walk in today and asked best price and they say $910
