Cheapest historically, even cheaper than Newegg's BF deal @ $517. Cheaper still when combined with cashback / zippay / whatever.

In before Ryzen, Gen 10… Note this is a deal ONLY if you have a 300 series Intel chipset where upgrading to Zen 3 / Gen 10 makes no sense.

It should also have decent resale value down the track as people stuck on 300 series mobo with an a low end processor upgrades to this CPU.

Imagine, this is selling for only $100 more than a USED i7 7700k on ebay!!!

While the M1 is neat, unless games are made for it its completely worthless for comparison. Unless you just want to run chrome really fast I guess…

      • M1 is apples adoption of ARM , doubt they would code drivers so that people could run chrome, companies license the ARM design, and then add some extras and get their version of the chip made, it’s amazing how many chips are based on ARM but sold under different brand names e.g M1.

    • A lot faster in games, or even photoshop etc (though those should get M1 optimised version eventually).

So anything where performance actually matters.

Excited about what the M2, M3 or M4 might do for PCs, though.

  • How much gains would I get upgrading my 3570k

  • Thanks OP picked one up

  • Is it worth going from an i7 8700k to this?

    • If you think you can get around $370 for your 8700k, then after using shopback and zip, it's a $40 upgrade cost. I think it's worth it.

    • +2

      Nope.

You're looking at like 2% performance increase in games.

    • https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qMa7vRZUKUI Intel i9 9900K vs. i7 9700K vs. i7 8700K Becnhmark Comparison 2020

I've just ordered one to replace my i7 8700k on my Z390 Aorus Pro Wifi. And I do plan on doing 3D rendering/Video editing.

  • Hmm I bought the 10700k but with this I just plonk it in my existing z170.. anyone know if I should just get the 9900k?

    • +1

      Follow your heart.

      • +1

Probably not the best idea there!

    • So looks like the z170 can't support the CPU. Bugger.

      • +1

People have done some crazy things by running (and also overclocking!) 9900Ks and other 9th gen chips on Z170 motherboards. Though it relies on BIOS modifications and is definitely not officially supported by intel or the board manufacturers. A high-end Z170 board with good VRMs is needed as a solid starting point to run the 9900K decently on Z170

An example of someone running a 9900K at 5.5Ghz (using water cooling obviously) on Z170:

        https://www.pcbuildersclub.com/en/2018/11/intel-core-i9-9900…

        • Awesome but seems out of my comfort zone. I have my 6600k oc to 4.5 currently but fans etc all on 100%. Guess I'll stick with the 10700k just need to find a good motherboard for it on the budget.

    • I'll buy your 10700k :)

      • If I change and end up going the pre-built route Ill pm you

    • won't work on a z170 or z270 board

  • Cheeky request. Could I please ask anyone who has got a recent Intel CPU that does not play fortnite please can I have their code to the Fortnite Splash Squadron skins?

  • +1

    Now this is a bargain

  • +1

    Thanks, OP. Bought one.

    Mainly because I have/had a spare z390 motherboard and 2 x 32GB sticks of RAM that'll suit it well.

As per other recommendations, I'd also suggest an AMD 3600 or 5600XT CPU over this for a completely new gaming PC.

  • Noob question. Why these deals so popular on OzB? Reason I ask, I do understand that if you build your machines, then you can upgrade the processors to extend life. I have only laptops. Can we upgrade laptops too?

My only experience of upgrading a processor was putting a Xeon processor in HP Gen6, which I did based on comments here and Google university.

    • Upgrade laptop CPUs?

Two immediate challenges that come to my mind are BIOS support for the new laptop CPU and its installation procedure as the old CPU might be glued/soldered to the motherboard

A targeted search on Google or Youtube might shed more light or postings on the relevant reddit group e.g. https://www.reddit.com/r/thinkpad

    • +1

You can upgrade some laptops. You'll be buying the entire board with everything attached though.

    • I do understand that if you build your machines, then you can upgrade the processors to extend life

Nope, we build our own desktops because we get much better performance-per-dollar than laptops. For example, "i7" laptop CPUs are often slower than i5 (and even some i3) desktop CPUs. They idea that a $1500 laptop is not much slower than a $1500 PC is pure marketing BS.

Upgrades are an important perk, but not the main reason.

      • Thank you all for sharing. Makes sense. @foojm, I will look up what you have shared. It is never too late to learn new things.

  • +1

I'm so tempted to get this and sell my 8700k.

However I barely need the 8700k's power, it's also under a monoblock, delidded and at 5.2Ghz all cores.

Issue with the selling part is the price of these being lower making the 8700k worth less.

    • Your second line suggests you should not get caught up in the marketing hype of buying something because………..

      • Because I don't need it.

I'd totally get it if I commonly thought "gee it'd be good to have more performance, typically two more cores"

  • Dang just bout an AMD Ryzen 5600x for RRP $469, knew I should've foreseen massive price drops from Intel and just bought this. At RRP, Ryzen is overpriced in comparison to the deep discounts that Intel is offering.

    • Not to mention all the bios issues with 5000 series right now

  • As someone whos last pc build was 6 years ago, is it worth getting this and building a gaming pc around? Or are there better options.

I don't need super top end, I usually go for mid range pc builds.

    • No, I'd go the 5600 route or genuinely hold out til AMD change their socket (which if I recall) they've mentioned they they're doing next gen.

I know you say you only do it every 5-6 years, however you can get an earlier board on the new socket and 3-4 years later get a newer CPU to make your cycle closer to 8 years potentially. I regret not getting a R7 2700 and then going to a 5700 later on.

  • Wish i could upgrade my i7-6700 with this :(

Thanks for the informative post OP!

I wish I could keep up with the desktop cpu world - it seems crazy complex between chipsets, vendors and family ranges..

Can I point out the server world is a lot simpler!

    processor : 111
    vendor_id : GenuineIntel
    cpu family : 6
    model : 85
    model name : Intel(R) Xeon(R) Gold 6238R CPU @ 2.20GHz
    stepping : 7
    cpu MHz : 1606.534
    cache size : 39424 KB
    physical id : 1
    siblings : 56

With regards to the Zip pay offer. With this deal, i assume you will only get the 10% back after amazon has made the $485 deduction from your zippy account, once the cpu has been sent right? So if the cpu ships after nov 30th, I guess you don't get the 10% back?

Reason i ask is because the last purchase i made that was shipped from America took over 1mth to arrive and was only shipped 2weeks after i made the purchase.

    • Good catch, I think you're right.

It's not worth it without the 10% off Zip so I'll cancel if it doesn't ship tomorrow.

  • Can someone confirm that if you get this, and maybe in a couple years get a RTX 4080, you'd get large bottlenecks right did to PCIE 3.0?

  • -2

Zip Pay promo is not eligible for non Amazon AU products. This is sold by Amazon US.

    • +1

It's via Amazon AU so they will honour it

  • Running a i7 8700 just bought a 3090. So tempted to get this… And sell the i7 8700.. Can anyone talk me out of it ?

    • +1

Nope, I’ve got an 8700k and got this and will sell the 8700k

    • +1

Also have a 8700k but a 3080 and decided against it, my reasons.
      1. I game at 1440p and the difference between the 9900k and 8700k at the higher res is pretty much a rounding error in fps numbers
      2. If you OC your 8700k (and you should, that gap closes even more)
      3. You need an a freezer unit to cool the 9900k. (even when mildy OCing)
      4. Not worth the hassle in pulling apart off my AIO, reapplying paste, reselling the 8700, etc
      5. You're still on Pcie 3. At some point my next upgrade will be a complete overhaul (zen 3 refresh maybe) so i can get more lanes for my SSD needs and maybe eek out a beesdick more performance from Ampere.

  • Not sure if this is worth it going from a i5 9600K for the increased clock speed and hyperthreading

    • Thats what Im pondering on with my 9600K.??? Getting this cpu should do for 3-4years, It has no pci-E x4, which doesnt matter yet…

  • Is it much of an upgrade from 9600k? I realised it's a dead end socket only after buying it.

    • I dont think it is, single core performance is ~10% better. multi core is quite a bit. Might hang onto the 9600K for a fefw more years then go AMD

  • Don't forget 10% cashback with shopback or cashrewards for Amazon!

    • +1

Incorrect. 4% for cashrewards n 5% from shopback

      • Oh right, I check again for their cashback rates for "Electronics", sorry I'm new to these cashbacks, I only saw "Up to 10%".

  • have a 9600k, this is drooling, but anyone know if it has any effective improvements in web browsing i.e. google jetstream or system responsiveness?

    • -2

it's 300k better, so may as well

  • Now I learned to check CamelCamelCamel for price drops. As provided below the OP's description.

  • I have the 7-7700K/ASUS ROG Strix Z270E GAMING/ASUS Strix GeForce GTX 1070 and plan to get an RTX3080 (or whatever refresh comes 1st quarter next year). Given that I would also need to upgrade the motherboard is this worth contemplating? I never overclock because I must have a SILENT fan cooled system (and currently do).

    Any insights appreciated.

P.S. I game but I also do a fair bit of data science/Unity/video encoding.
P.P.S. And I would like to game at 4k 60FPS if possible.. With raytracing (or whatever DLSS at 60FPS needs to upsample from if that's not achievable).

    • +1

There are ways to run the i9-9900K in Z270 and Z170 motherboards (requires some BIOS modding etc.). Obviously not officially sanctioned by Intel:

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hghT2iOvWTU

      https://www.pcbuildersclub.com/en/2018/11/intel-core-i9-9900…

      https://www.reddit.com/r/intel/comments/g1vl26/coffee_lake_i…

      • Damn.
And I would have ordered one just based on that. But it just expired.

        • Yeah unfortunately went up $22 to $505 now. If you've got Cashrewards/Shopback or Zip's 10% off Amazon offer I guess that would effectively reduce the price back below the original deal price though

          • @AussieDeals: I think I will just take it as a sign to wait for Rocket Lake and 20GB RTX3080 revisions early next year.
Hopefully AMD keeps upping their game to put pressure on Intel and prevent prices from rising too far.

Will really kill me to play Cyberpunk 2077 without raytracing and at 1080p :P

            • @michal: Back to 483 now. lol.

              • @Wootwootwoot: I almost pulled the trigger until I discovered that I would need to make hardware modifications to the motherboard. Surely a sign to just wait a few months for a significantly better (albeit somewhat more expensive) motherboard/CPU.

Then I can just sell this one.. Or repurpose it.

  • Am i able to change the payment method from zip to gift card? I don't think it will be shipped today, missing the 10% cashback window from zippay. If i bought a $500 gift card which should be instant, can i change the 9900k order from zippay to gift card?

    • I'd call amazon support. They have a phone line with pretty good waiting time.

  • +1

    back up to $607

  • Has their order shipped yet?

    • Nope. But they still expect mid Dec delivery when I asked.

    • I'm assuming it's only marked as shipped when they're shipped in Australia after they arrive from the US?

      • nope. all my orders that came from america shows as shipped once it leaves he USA warehouse, then makes it way to australia .

    • Been 2 weeks already and not shipped yet, not holding my breath I'm getting it on their earliest estimate (16th dec).
Wanted it for cyberpunk oh well.

      • My last order from amazon us took over 1mth to arrive. Where as the recent nxzt kracken deal.from amazon UK arrived in less then 2 weeks.

        • Not sure about you but my i9 order has been stuck on "preparing for shipment" status for almost a week.
They did say it should arrive before Christmas when I ordered it, lets hope!

          • +1

@Sampo5: my order didnt get shipped for at least 3 weeks. it arrived 1 week later.

      • My order just got shipped, says it's arriving on Jan 6th.

        • There goes any hopes of receiving it by Christmas. Amazons really dropped the ball (for me) this holiday season - not the first item to be severely delayed from estimates.
Why say delivery before Christmas when I ordered it if they are not able to uphold it?
Anyway, can I ask which delivery option you chose? (expedited, standard, priority). Asking since I paid the extra tenner for priority.

          • @Sampo5: I just went with the default through Amazon prime which was free - Expedited International Delivery. My estimated dates initially was 15th dec- jan 22nd. So I guess that’s right in the middle.

  • Mine finally shipped. ETA 31st Dec via Fedex

    • Wow mine shipped on the 13th with I-parcel and is expected 6th jan…did you choose express?

      • Nah the normal free one. Just arrived today. I thought it would come in the hexagon box thingy but was just a regular cpu box.

        • Yeah mine arrived today with "authority to leave" even though I never put that down. It was just left outside the front door in the rain. It was Amarex (fastway), they didn't even ring the doorbell.

          • @Balljuice: Mines in Sydney right now (last update was "Package transferred to another carrier for delivery" from Port Botany) should arrive later this week I think.
Surprised how quickly some others got it though!
