          • @Gregors510: yes, it's for Bluray only.. for now at least.

Dolby Vision is not supported. It probably won't be added later because it needs to be licensed.

  • +1

Blade also reduced with same release date being 02/12/2020
was $24.98 the other day (and when google 'blade 4k jbhifi') but is currently $17.49
    https://www.jbhifi.com.au/products/blade-1998-4k-ultra-hd-bl…

edit: postage for me is $9.99 if order together, but if separate then $4.99 for LOTR and $1.99 for Blade (so, $6.98)

  • The Lord of the Rings: The Motion Picture Trilogy 4K

According to the info detailed above, this does includes a Digital Copy code, but none of the extensive DVD-era extras are included.

… each theatrical cut getting a triple-layer 100GB disc to itself and the extended cuts split between two discs apiece. An even more lavish trilogy collection — including brand-new extras — is planned for release sometime in 2021.

Each film in this trilogy has been granted a new 4K restoration by WETA Digital, which involved a full 4K scan of the camera negatives and visual effects filmouts (with digital VFX upscaled from 2K elements), as well as tasteful new color timing made possible by HDR enhancement; all were supervised and approved by director Peter Jackson. Depending on your 4K TV's capability, this enhancement will be displayed using standard HDR, HDR10, or Dolby Vision. Please note that both the theatrical and extended versions of each film make use of the same restored source material.

Likewise, the audio mix of each film has been expanded to Dolby Atmos, which automatically unfolds to Dolby TrueHD 7.1 if your receiver does not support the format. Each cut is sourced from the same remixed elements.

    • that's too bad, i think worth waiting for the 20th Anniversary which peter jackson said will include everything and remastered behind the scenes

    • +2

You're looking at the US version. The AU version does not include digital copies.

  • Thanks op.. already ordered it at $99 and it's shipped but bought this and I'll return the second copy when it ships for the price difference.

    • I love jbhifi's easy return policy.. awesome store

  • thanks op!

  • 9 discs?

2 disks for each movie (theatrical and extended) so what are the other 3 for?

    • +1

See 2getted's comment above… extended version is on 2 discs

  • Thanks OP!

  • Thanks, bought both!

  • -4

Not good value, works out to be 25 per movie. Will be half this price in few months

    • +4

You think you're going to get the theatrical and extended versions of all 3 films in 4K for $35 in a few months? Good luck with that.

    • Unlike normal 4K movies that give you a 100gb 4k disk and also a 25gb Bluray disk this movie is giving you 3x 100GB 4K disks per movi e.. thats not going to sell for the same price.

    • you'll have to wait until BOGOF in May

      • Don't forget Amazon, àll my 4k purchases in the past year have been via Amazon. Most have been about 10 per movie

  • Are the Hobbit movies any good? I still haven't watched them (originally because I could not find a 48fps theatre anywhere but since then I have read terrible things about them and I know no one who watched them).

    • +2

They’re perfectly watchable. Nowhere near as good as lotr, but 20 years later nothing is, so theres that.

    • Hobbit Movies are good and worth watching… Not as good as LOTR

    • +1

No. They are bloated cash grabs. There was never enough content to fill 9 hours from that short book. He was grasping at straws trying to fill the content and introduced new characters, and characters that weren't in the book.

    • First Hobbit is decent but lots of unneeded excess. Second one is only good for the Smaug scene. Third one is fairly poor. They're not bad but you expect a lot more from these kind of movies. Hobbit movies feel stretched like butter scraped over too much bread :)

      • +1

it's because the source material of hobbit is just nowhere near as good as the source material for LOTR.

PJ wanted to do a Hobbit film, make it a trilogy just as epic as LOTR but the book itself was a third of the length or less, so he had to go through appendices and Silmarilon to try and shoehorn some stuff in that wasn't from the book, including making up new characters and bringing LOTR characters into the story who weren't in the book.

He tried to make it more epic than it had any right to be, and what we got is a ton of bloat that any other studio would have told him to leave on the cutting room floor. But because he is PJ and he made LOTR, they let him call all the shots, hoping for a LOTR-level success.

    • +1

Their biggest issue is that what SHOULD have been one movie got dragged out for THREE movies for a cash grab.
If it was one film it would have been alright. And they also should certainly have released it before the LOTR trilogy, not only for continuity's sake, but it's a bit of an anti-climax to watch the trilogy first then the more underwhelming Hobbit!

All that aside however, it's watchable. The 48fps was suuuper weird in the cinema. It felt like watching it in fast forward, felt really unnatural. Whether that just be our eyes not being used to that for film or what, I don't know!

      • I don't get this.

I have seen a ton of 60 fps videos on youtube and not only do they not look unnatural, they are very smooth and it's hard going back to 30 fps. I am not talking about video game footage here by the way, but nature footage and just ordinary videos.

That said I did not watch Hobbit in 48 fps, but if the youtube 60 fps was fine (and better) for me, I don't see why 48 fps would look wrong.

        • Totally understandable to think that way, I thought the same going in! But again, it's kind of hard to explain.

It didn't just look like normal 60fps footage would, it's like they took the 24fps film and just doubled the speed and it looked unnatural and sped up. Whether it just be hard to get used to seeing that on a cinema screen, or whether it was just a weird speed to watch a film at (the first time we've seen one above 24 fps), I don't know!

          • @X2Jason: is the 48 fps version available to watch anywhere? Streaming or disc.

            • @lostn: I don't believe so. From my understanding, based on things I've read in forums etc., it's a limitation of blu-ray players and TV support which only offer 24/60 fps (and variable rates up to 120 thanks to modern TVs - so perhaps it would be possible in the future, but I doubt they'll do it given there's no real push for it).

  • +1

Worth waiting for the 4k 20th anniversary edition next year? I assume that'll include all the bonus content on 4k as well?
I got the blu-ray box set of all Hobbit / LOTR extended so no rush

    • Next year's bonus material will likely just be all the extras included on standard blu-ray, combined with the 4K discs. Nothing you don't have already if you have the blu-ray box sets. Unless you really want whatever new packaging they come up with, I'd just get these.

      • I'd expect other extras too.

    • The blu-ray boxed set is a good package. Im going to put the 4k discs in it and move the blurays to storage.

    • I'm in no rush so personally i'm waiting for the 20th anniversay , there are actually 2 different releases coming out next year:
      1. Collectors edition = summer 2021
      2. 20th Anniversary edition = end 2021

they will also come in proper collectors boxes with extra items and extra contents

  • Thank you OP

  • +1

I bought LOTR however since you can't select click & collect, shipping increases its price and the discount works out to only be ~25%

    • Yep I remember when it was $2 - now it's $5. I bet they still send it in a satchel so it arrives dinged up

      • Price back to $2 for delivery and click and collect is now available.

  • -1

i loved these films.. but I can't make myself watch them again because they're just too long

    • Absurd. Although The Hobbit can be painful at times

      • +2

oh I meant LOTR only. I didn't like Hobbit. It was bloated and much longer than it should have been. He forced it to be that long but didn't have enough content to fill the 9 hour quota he set for himself.

        • Yep, that's the main difference between the two. LOTR was an epic trilogy of books that had to be cut down to fit into 3 3 hour movies, so there was plenty of scope to restore missing material to make it a richer experience.

The Hobbit was a relatively slight, single novel that could have been easily made into a single 3 hour movie, or perhaps 2 2 hour movies. Instead it got bloated out into an unnecessary, overlong trilogy that was at least 50% filler in its theatrical version. There is nothing to be gained by adding even more footage into that.

          • @AngusD: that's the thing.. not only were the theatrical releases of the Hobbit films already too long, he saw fit to make extended cuts of films that should have been shorter not longer.

New Line wanted them to be three films also, to maximise ticket sales, and match LOTR. It was all about money in the end.

I always go for extended cuts just to not "miss" anything, and feel like I got the complete experience, but unlike when I was watching the 4 hour LOTR films where 4 hours just whizzed by and didn't seem long at all, watching Hobbit felt like torture. I needed to take a few intermissions because it was slow moving and not very engaging. It was exhausting. LOTR never felt slow. I didn't feel a single minute of that trilogy needed cutting, and the extended cuts only made them even better.

It doesn't help that I wasn't a fan of the Hobbit book either. It wasn't his best work.

          • @AngusD: what did the movies miss on that the source had?

            • +1

@Zachary: A lot of back story and history, as well as some characters / sequences.

For the most part, I think the changes actually improved the story. While the books are a superb piece of world building, as an actual story it has some pretty serious pacing issues.

              https://screenrant.com/lord-of-the-rings-book-changes-helps-…

There's another list here that is much more exhaustive (probably TOO exhaustive - to much focus on even minor details): http://www.theonering.com/complete-list-of-film-changes

But the point is, there was more than enough material there to justify the length of the extended editions of the movies. The Hobbit… not so much.

            • +1

@Zachary: I think the biggest omission was Tom Bombadil.

The films changed a lot of things, with the biggest crime being the invincible ghost army in ROTK. That wasn't what happened in the books, and then they had to explain why he let the ghosts go free instead of using them for one last battle (which would have been a pushover with their help). The explanation was not adequate. The book didn't have to justify this because they didn't have a ghost army to save the day.

              • @lostn: yeah, but speaking realistically, how do u beat or kill a ghost army that is already dead that you can only visually see and hear but not touch? only aragon's sword was able to touch these ethereal forms. the orcs and other enemies would have had a similar weapon of power to even touch the ghosts of the dead…

                • @Zachary: that's why I think it was a stupid idea to put them in. You have a trump card that could rout all of Sauron's armies and Sauron himself, and they are subservient to Aragorn. He could have commanded them to fight one more battle (which would have been no risk to them since they can't be touched) before releasing them from their debt to him.

The book didn't have this problem because it wasn't ghosts who showed up at the last minute. Elrond did not send him to go recruit them.

                  • @lostn:

He could have commanded them to fight one more battle (which would have been no risk to them since they can't be touched) before releasing them from their debt to him.

I'm guessing they would be pretty angry to fight one more battle when they just want to leave? that's the only logical conclusion I can think of of Aragon not wanting them to fight another one…

So how did they win the battle in the books if it wasn't the ghost army that mowed them all down and Elrond never advised to recruit them?

                    • @Zachary: I think that's a flimsy way to dismiss an army because they weren't available for the final battle in the book.

In the book, when the ships arrive at the battle of Minas Tirith, it is not a ghost army that disembarks but the Dunedain (Aragorn's race). They are not invincible soldiers, so it remains a hard fought battle, many of them die but it was enough to tip the scales and they eventually win. Compare that to ghosts arriving and massacring all the orcs without a casualty. Both serve as deus ex machina, but one is a free victory, the other is a Pyrrhic one. With the free victory, the writers have to explain why this invincible army who is at Aragorn's service wasn't asked to serve him one last time. They didn't do a good job.

The identity of the Rohirrim rider who kills the Witch King is kept a mystery in the book (they have a name but it escapes me), even from Sam (the rider is presumed a man) until "he" says "I am not a man but a woman" and it turns out to be Eowyn. Obviously they were going to have difficulty hiding her identity because as soon as she speaks, we know it's a woman, and Sam immediately recognizes who she is.

Aside from that, the film is pretty good.

If you want another example of stuff that was cut, it's the scouring of the shire. If my memory serves, in the ROTK film, Saruman dies at his tower in the beginning which pissed off the actor and he boycotted the premier. Though it's been a while.. maybe he died at the end of TTT. In the ROTK book, he doesn't die there. There's a chapter after Sauron is defeated called the Scouring of the Shire where Saruman is up to yet some more shenanigans in the Shire. Being that the denouement is already so long, I can see why PJ cut the chapter.

I remember watching it in the theater with my friends (not even the extended cut) and two of them had quite a few beers before going in, and their bladders were bursting because the denouement was so freaking long. They thought after the bad guy is defeated and the war is over, the credits would soon roll, but it was like an extra 30 mins more before they could go out and have a piss. They were both in agony.

I am not a purist by the way. I think the films were great and the changes made are for the most part understandable and make sense. The third film had the most changes that peeved me but the most glaring one was that ghost army.

Fellowship did not do a good job making clear how many years had passed in the beginning from when Gandalf first visited Bilbo and when he returns after doing his research on the ring. A few decades passed in the beginning but because no one ages, the audience assumes it wasn't a long passage of time.

                      • @lostn:

  • Am I correct in my understanding that this set is missing the appendices that came with the previous DVD / BluRay sets of the extended LOTR trilogy?

If so then I think I'll give this a miss and wait for the new set coming next year when they'll hopefully be included. That was hands down the best collection of behind the scenes / making-of material that I have ever seen. Superb, absolutely fascinating - I got almost as much entertainment out of that stuff (and the commentary tracks, too) as I did from the movies themselves.

    • I can't wait.

Agreed though, they are the best extras ever. I've never cared much for them till I saw those.

    • what a cash grab that they're going to release a new set next year. Why not just include them and make it one release?

      • Because then they'd miss out on their opportunity to grab cash :P

But yeah, the smart people will just make do with their existing DVDs / BluRays and wait a few more months for 4K.

  • Don't forget you can use gift cards to pay.
E.g.: 5% off JB GC at Suncorp

  • +3

I'm in no rush to get hands on these box sets. Matter of time, they'll be part of JB buy 1 & get one free boxset deals which come multiple times a year. Will get them then. Patience is key!

  • Heh heh, Lord of the wings

  • I already preordered last week for $99. Paid a deposit. Wouldn't I pay this special price when it releases? Doesn't jb have a price guarantee

    • I would definitely contact them ASAP as they will most likely be shipping today/tomorrow. Pretty sure you will get it discounted.

      • I went into store today and picked up my preorder. Received the price guarantee and picked up hobbit too. Thanks

  • +1

    Buy, you fools!

    • +1

      Don't be hasty!

  • Thanks purchased.

Thought these had the extras, sigh, another double dip again next year. Bought these movies way to many times.

    Still. My favourite.

  • Ridiculous price! Thanks OP!!

  • Is this the one with 87 hours of extra footage?

    • +2

It contains both versions - theatrical and extended.

But it doesn't include the many (MANY!) hours of additional material that was included with the original release of the extended versions. So if you can wait until next year's set comes out then I'd recommend doing so, because that behind the scenes stuff is well worth watching in this case.

      • Oh yeah, I've read somewhere that in 3-5 months the whole deal is coming out in 4k HDR.
I'll hold off and wait then since I've watched it not that long ago.
        Thanks for the reminder!

  • Price back to $2 for delivery and click and collect is now available.

  • Yeah I ordered click and collect this morning, about 5 mins later got SMS saying ready for pick up now.

    • +3

Sux for me and anyone else who ordered last night because delivery was $4.99 and there was no click and collect..

Now its $1.99 for delivery and they have click and collect…

Tried to call JBhifi and they cant cancel your order over the phone you can only submit a request for cancellation and it can take 48 hours… the product may ship out before the order gets canceled and if you return the item you wont be refunded the shipping cost so their cancellation process really sucks and is almost 100% pointless.

      • Yeah I should have waited, but no big deal - just $3 more and it's delivered.

    • And just picked up. They had bunch of this week's new releases in boxes looking like ready to go out onvfloor

  • +1

This may be the set I'll run my PS5s HDR drive through first! Tho it's been less than a year since I re watched it 😕

  • Did they put the wrong consumer advice on the Hobbit Trilogy box?

MA15+ - Strong fantasy violence and coarse language

    Those sweary little hobbitses.

    • +1

Nope, its correct. The extended edition of the third Hobbit movie earns this rating. Don't know about the coarse language but its a LOT more violent.

  • I picked up The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies on 4K just a little after 9am at JB this morning, using the HIM card, bringing them down to $58.90, and $52.95:

    https://ibb.co/kHSdfL9

    https://ibb.co/vHfq62x

    • Hi do they still give 30% off on the already discounted price?

  • Temporarily unavailable online

Checked for in store and none availeble within 200km

    • Just got Oz bargained lol

This deal's off the menu boys

  • Will this work in a non4k UHD Blu Ray player?

    • NO… no bluray disks included only 4k disks so you will need a 4k player

  • Missed out, both this and the Hobbit 4K are saying temporarily unavailable online. Is any where price matching?

    • +1

best bet would be to walk into a store and ask… they may have stock in the back to put on shelves.

  • +1

Just picked up both of these in store for $62.30 each. LOTR was priced wrong. Thanks OP.

  • -1

    Not behhhd, good proice!

  • The third disc for The Two Towers is blue instead of red (i.e. 3 green discs, 2 red discs, and 4 blue discs) for me… anyone else?

    • Yeah, mine is the same… 2 red 1 blue for The Two Towers.

  • I want a movie or trilogy that explores the story of the elves or the first generation humans….

    • +1

The Amazon show will be based of the Silmarillion so pretty much that. As to how good it's going to be…

      • oooooohhhhhhh…..

  • Just got email saying that stock is delayed and should be available mid December.

    • Same, hobbit shipped, uggghh

    • Got the same email. Was going to see if all stores were delayed or just JB. Pretty disappointed. It was an impulse buy and I wouldn't have bought it if I knew it would be a long wait.

    • Saaaaame.
      :(

    • This is insane. Preorders are delayed but stores are already selling them. Just picked up LOTR + Hobbitses 4k from JB Doncaster. They still have 3-4 in the shelf. JB Plenty Valley also
