DVD/BD storage/shelving

I'm in need of some DVD/BD storage. I have several hundred movies and dozens of TV shows, each with several season… if you went by the disc count alone it'd probably be over two thousand. Perhaps over three thousand. I should probably inventory them.

Anyway, I'd been cramming them into a bookcase, a display cabinet and, well, on the floor and piled on top of that cabinet and bookcase.

But I've just moved into a new home and I want this place to not look terrible. So I want a decent way to store and display my alphabetically sorted flicks and shows.

Bookcases aren't good. They are far too deep for DVD/BDs. Most DVD/BD specific racks/shelves aren't designed for a collection of my size.

The best aesthetic choice I've found is the IKEA Benno DVD shelves - 2 metres high but only 20cm wide. They fit around 90 DVDs each, so I'd need at least 6 of them for the movies, and then maybe another 4 for the TV shows that don't have fancy boxes, then I'd need another kind of storage for the weirdly shaped collection style stuff. The BENNOs are $59 each for plain white/black, or $69 each for wood effect ones. So I'd be looking at $600-$700, and I still wouldn't be fitting the oddly shaped collection packs. For those wondering about their look, this is the pic that convinced me they'd look OK:

Right depth, right height (you can see different heights for CD and DVD in there), modular and easy to shape into corners. The only major downside I can think of is that when I buy a new movie that start with A I'll have to gradually move one movie from each section of each unit until it fits. I've severely slowed my purchasing though, so it shouldn't be a massive problem.

But it's kind of expensive. Yes, I've probably already spend $10K+ on my collection, even though I bought virtually everything on at or under 1/3 the AUS RRP. But I still baulk at the upfront cost of the shelving.

I've been watching the BENNO price for a couple of months and it never moves. I also know it was that price 5 years ago. I don't think it ever goes on special.

So. Does anyone have any suggestions for alternatives, or knows if/when these things go on special?

  • Hey there,

Don't know if this is the kind of thing you might be after, but I recently purchased the 'Oskar' DVD/CD/Bluray storage shelf from Selby Acoustics for my growing collection.

Comes in White, Black, and Espresso (Brown).
It was relatively inexpensive and housed the most DVDs and Blurays of any unit that I could find elsewhere.

EDIT: Just realised you're in Perth, so checking the unit out at their physical store probably won't be an option, haha. I believe they offer free shipping Australia-wide though.. (?)

Best of luck on your hunt! :-D

  • Holy crap that's good value.

Thanks, that's a great suggestion. I'll probably end up getting a couple.

  • After hunting around for better options, I found none and ordered two of the Espresso Oskar 504 DVD shelves from Selby. Thanks again.
