From Friday at 10am, the Victorian government is offering 40,000 Victorians $200 'vouchers' to travel within Victoria between December 12 and January 22 as a stimulus for the tourism industry.

You have to spend over $400 on one of the following categories to get the $200 back:
- accommodation
- tours
- local attractions

Exclusions are gaming, alcohol (except if alcohol is included in wine/brewery/distillery tasting type tour but excludes any alcohol purchased and consumed outside of the experience), fuel, food and drinks (except where packaged with an eligible expense such as a winery tour), groceries, personal items such as clothing and accessories, transport costs (rental vehicles, train and bus tickets).

It's really a reimbursement from the government though – travellers have to apply for the voucher, pay for the travel upfront and then receive a reimbursement from the government.

Still, $200 back on your trip is still $200 back!

Another 40,000 vouchers will be available on January 20, and may be redeemed for travel from January 27 to April 1, and the final batch of vouchers will be released on March 30 for use from April 6 to May 31.

Round 2: 40,000 vouchers will be released from 20 January 2021, 10.00am for travel between 27 January 2021 to 1 April 2021. Sold Out

Round 3: 30 March 2021, 10.00am, for travel between 6 April 2021 to 31 May 2021

          And if you read the reason why S&P downgraded our credit rating, it was because of long term commitments of spending that would be tough to wind down. I think our economic growth will more than account for any slight increase in funding costs. Would rather see a pro-active government trying to directly put money into where it is needed, than the Federal government putting money where it isn't needed and hoping it trickles down.

    edit : Read the faq and answered my own question.

    Looks like you get the $200 as a refund into an australian bank account after you complete your trip, once you submit all your receipts to prove the spend occurred.

      I would imagine they would be - hard to distinguish between a tour and an activity like this. You're just taking a tour of the space in between a plane and the ground.

    No, you must stay in paid accommodation for your holiday. This scheme is designed to provide a boost to regional tourism businesses including accommodation providers, you still must spend at least $400 on accommodation, tours or entry fees to tourism attractions.

    Was waiting for these details. Definitely going to take advantage, hopefully I can get a voucher, I expect the website to crash so hard at 10am tomorrow!

    Also, the OP should put in the post that 2 nights minimum of paid accommodation is required to get any money back. Pretty important requirement of the deal.

      The point is to encourage spending and stimulate the economy. Give people feee money and they might stretch their spending a bit more, and I imagine some people will find they really liked a place or had good memories from that subsidised holiday that they may return - or make it a point to go on more regional holidays to discover Vic.

      It’s getting people thinking, enjoying, then spending.

    Once again, government doesn't think this through. Watch everyone apply for them in a mad rush, and how many will actually get used? They should have charged $50 to get the voucher and reimbursed $250. That would stop people speculating, and only apply if they knew they'd use it.

      I agree that part could have been better thought through. They will send you an email though after getting your voucher checking if you are still going to travel or if you would like to relinquish it.

      You’re only eligible if you spend minimum $400 on a trip. So it’s a subsidy for your holiday, not just $200 free cash for nothing.

      You don't get a voucher upfront. You get the $200 deposited into your bank account AFTER your trip.

        The purpose of this scheme is to encourage people going to regional VIC. If the vouchers are not getting used then this purpose is not achieved. So they should still put some measures in place to discourage unnecessary hoarding.

        Instead of being rude, perhaps you should read it again.

        Actually you do register for the voucher upfront. You can only claim it AFTER incurring eligible travel. People will apply for the voucher, in case they travel, but a heap of people will not use it. Once 40,000 have registered it's all over for this round.
