40,000 $200 Regional Travel Rebates on $400 Travel Spend Available to Victorians

6136

From Friday at 10am, the Victorian government is offering 40,000 Victorians $200 'vouchers' to travel within Victoria between December 12 and January 22 as a stimulus for the tourism industry.

You have to spend over $400 on one of the following categories to get the $200 back:
- accommodation
- tours
- local attractions

Exclusions are gaming, alcohol (except if alcohol is included in wine/brewery/distillery tasting type tour but excludes any alcohol purchased and consumed outside of the experience), fuel, food and drinks (except where packaged with an eligible expense such as a winery tour), groceries, personal items such as clothing and accessories, transport costs (rental vehicles, train and bus tickets).

It's really a reimbursement from the government though – travellers have to apply for the voucher, pay for the travel upfront and then receive a reimbursement from the government.

Still, $200 back on your trip is still $200 back!

Another 40,000 vouchers will be available on January 20, and may be redeemed for travel from January 27 to April 1, and the final batch of vouchers will be released on March 30 for use from April 6 to May 31.

Update: An extra 30,000 regional tourism vouchers will be made available to Victorians at 12PM today. Sold Out

Round 2: 40,000 vouchers will be released from 20 January 2021, 10.00am for travel between 27 January 2021 to 1 April 2021. Sold Out

Round 3: 30 March 2021, 10.00am, for travel between 6 April 2021 to 31 May 2021

    • Requires a minimum of 2 nights stay in regional vic.

      • Oh is it like for any activity we book, min 2 nights stay required?

Didn't know that. Thanks for the update.

  • Paid accommodation with amex travel credit, am I eligible?

  • +2

Sent an email to Business VIC but just checking if anyone here have any information.

So booked an accommodation for $1500 split between 3 people from 3 different household. Only one invoice from the accommodation.

Will everyone in my group be eligible to get the voucher as we spent $500 each? or because there is only one invoice, only one person is able to reimburse the $200?

    • +3

Better to talk to business to get 3 invoices of $500 each … they will be happy to do it.

      • Can't really do this if you booked via AirBnB. I'm facing the same issue. Hopefully someone can clear this up.

        • For claiming;
          1) All 3 needs to have a Voucher to be eligible to apply for reimbursement later. Booking for vouchers will open tomorrow at 10am.
          2) Ask your friends to transfer $500 to your account with Airbnb Reference no.
          3) Upload Airbnb, transfer to friend account, Pics of person claiming in regional area with date stamp, reflecting same dates as Airbnb booking and outside booked accommodation along with Airbnb pics of same location.

with so many prooves, i don't see why they wont approve.

    • Did you get a reponse from them? Spoke to my hotel and they can't split invoices but can put all names of people staying on the it. Not sure if helpful

      • Oh yes.

Update. one Invoice can be used for multiple household. if you need proof, send me a dm of your email and i can send you the screenshot of the email from business vic.

        • Thanks for that. Unable to dm you due to your settings

          • @RockyK9: I got a response but different to yours - "Our suggestion is to ensure that both names appear on the invoice and to get a separate receipt each, showing how much each of you paid, if possible. This should help with the claims process."

        • I got a response but different to yours - "Our suggestion is to ensure that both names appear on the invoice and to get a separate receipt each, showing how much each of you paid, if possible. This should help with the claims process".

          • @RockyK9: Oh weird. This is what i got:

            "Thank you for your enquiry.

As the program is only available to one per household; you should be able to use the same invoice for all families that stay in the AirBnb."

I honestly think that they are pretty lenient about this. My friend copped a voucher without even needing to have any plans yet. i'll message you the screen shot so maybe you can use it to support your case if needed.

The deal is good - the intention is good. Kids .. this is a good example of how you can not make everyone happy!

  • If I get the voucher in round 1, will I be ineligible in round 2?

    Thanks.
Do I need to stay in the same hotel for 2 nights?
Can I stay in 2 different hotel for 1 night each?

    Thanks a lot.

Huh…interesting. Frankston City Council is included as an eligible region.

Ok folks what is the best hotel accommodation in Franga?

    • +2

Frankston Correctional Centre accommodation is not bad.

What's the bet the site goes down at 10:01am tomorrow morning

    • Building a vertically scalable site that accepts registration and not having to process the data in real-time is not that complicated - Having said that, I don't want to underestimate the stupidity of people that running these shows.

      • +1

It's happened before more often than not. Scaling can't keep up if the backend is written transactionally needs to be verified and synced both ways "guarantee only once" as opposed to "at least once".

Not easy to change legacy either. Only tomorrow will tell

        • FFS .. site is down!!

          • @Indomietable: Hey but we both knew that yesterday, no surprises

  • Hmmmm seeming its peak season and a like a no fee option this batch is gone . People like me will get it but just in case of using it but unlikely to .
The voucher is FREE so the bots are going to fire big time :)

I don't like the 1 per household because my poor dogs and cats and 27 fish will miss out : (

    • People living in share accommodation are in for a surprise lol

  • Does airbnb give you an Australian tax invoice ? I've used it before and cannot find an invoice under my account. You do need it to claim this

    • +2

I don't think they do, I've just had a look of my previous bookings and can only locate an invoice. I just called up Business Victoria who did say Airbnbs would qualify under accomodations however a tax invoice is needed to claim.

      • Okay, so I found this which might explain why there's no option for tax invoice:

"The ATO considers Airbnb rentals as residential, which means that GST (Goods and Services Tax) does not apply."

I think I'll be booking through Booking or Agoda instead.

        • So AirBnb is a no go :-(

          • @iamgroot1799: I saw that it said tax invoices and/or receipts but.. yeah, the lady on the phone did say tax invoice. Probably best not to risk it.

        • It pretty clearly says and/OR receipts, so I'd say you'd be fine.

          • @zukand: Thank you for your reassurance. I now feel totally confident in booking because some complete random stranger from the internet deduced it was ok.

            KFC.

  • Another silly trick to waste tax payers money from politicians.

Now everyone will jack up accommodation rates.

  • If I'm spending over four hundred staying one night, how do I get the voucher? Book another night somewhere for cheap?

  • I’ve already booked 2 nights at Lorne on Expedia for $398 and I’m paying for it on New Year’s Eve. What would be the best way to get me over the line for $2? Could I just get the hotel to charge me $2 extra even though it’s booked through Expedia? I rang and added breakfast but now I see food isn’t included. Would hiring a boogie boards class as an attraction?

    • If the breakfast is not separately itemised it would count towards the $400 minimum.

If it is separate, best way would be to attend a local attraction. You could go visit the Split Point (Round the Twist) lighthouse in Aireys Inlet for $12.

  • I have a 2-night accom booked for this weekend but am $50 short. Can I book a wine tour for say, early Jan, to make up the remaining $50? Or does it have to be in ONE trip?

    • Can’t see any restriction on the length of trip or taking multiple trips as long as it’s all within the same eligible travel period.

      • This interests me, multiple trips in the time period. I'm doing an AirBnB in Colac next weekend then 3 nights camping near Wilson's prom in XMAS, so combined that's only about $190

  • +1

I have a accomodation for $2k+ under my name. Can my 4 other friends who are also on the trip make a claim on this?

    • Only if you each paid 1/5 of the cost separately and each have a receipt/invoice to prove it

  • Interesting that the travel period doesn't apply over the Australia Day long weekend. That counts me out as I have a booking then. Good luck to those that are eligible $200 is $200 and a nice rebate.
