Boxing Day Is No Bargain, The Bargain Is Here on OzBargain

So i have seen many news reports that go something like this "bargain hunters going to get a deal"

let me tell you something, if you are lining outside myer at 6am to get a 'bargain' you're not a bargain hunter. You have not:

  • Done any planning at all and are just waiting outside for a good deal. This is how impulse buying and the atmosphere forces you to buy it. Found something you think is a good deal? how can you check it on price hipster and how can you look for coupon codes.

  • All the sales are already known via online and leaked catalogue. Getting it in store is actually worse. At home you can do cashback, zip coupon codes, and all the other various methods. Go get it price matched and etc. In store, it is what it is. so you are actually getting a worse deal and on top of that covid.

  • No no no, you would have planned all your purchases and watched the price, timing and all the other factors before. Ozbargain advice about products and etc.

To make this clear, i am not against going out on boxing day to get a deal, but given this year it is better to stay at home. The crowds without mask roaming around while we have an outbreak with the whole northern part locked down is the cause of the next catastrophe. Just stay on ozbargain and get a better deal.

This is part of Boxing Day Sales for 2020

Myer's boxing day sales were more expensive than previous random sales. Polos I got for $29 couple weeks ago were all $35 today…

There's no proper sales neither today nor Black Friday anymore. Only discounts you might find are stock clearances which is what BF was all about originally anyway. Getting rid of unsold stock to clear shelves for the new year's models.

I’d rather buy clothes in store and actually try them on than online for the majority of my purchases.

  • +1

Yeah they like to Jack up the prices just before the sales

There are in-store bargains, and there are states with no cases of Covid…

There, debunked your wall of text with 13 words…

    • +3

well yes, states without covid are fine but again good luck finding an in-store bargain. not a wall of text, was structured i would think quite nicely

Bargains can still be found. You can either a) have an idea of market prices and know what you'd accept to pay, or b) are happy with the price at the time. Bargains are subjective and don't have to be at a historical lowest price to be a bargain.

Clothing and Christmas merch/stuff are 2 items that go on sale and can't be price compared very easily.

Not to mention, a lot of people have an aversion to online shopping. Can be generational, or other reasons, but it still happens.

TL;DR - not everyone is like you or shops like you, so don't bag those who do.

  • But then we won’t get to experience stampedes…

Avoid the stampede, online shop at 131am 😂

I think its been like that for a while now, beyond just boxing day sales. No sale is truly a sale to me until I've seen price history and comparison and worth. I imagine similarly the idea of a sale has changed a lot since coming on this site, largely as I have a better knowledge of prices of things then I did before, and the community helps gauge and understand prices for things I know little of.

I have heard some shops do have special prices for in store boxing day sales, so for some might be worth it, but agreed with you that the sale is probably more to have the thrill of purchasing at okay prices as opposed to getting real sales and for most, may not be worth it.

Boxing day has become a group think scam.

Myer used to have "Early Bird" sales where you get extra discount between 5am to 8am or something. This year they don't have it and I noticed they are all replaced by "Clearance"

Having said that, I disagree with OP and I did find quite a number of very good deals and the point of coming in early is to find your size (clothes) at clearance price and I found some this year. Those clearance stuffs were not in the catalogue.

Over to DFO, it was jam packed with Tommy Hillfiger selling at minimum 50% and some shirts can be had for $19. IKEA was totally crap. Hardly Normal has lots of labels called "Hot Deals" but they are really $10-20 off their normal price. Mac Lappies were 10% but they're from high tide anyway. Samsung $350 off all Note ranges but again, still from very high tide but the 5g Ultra 512gb becomes cheaper (not cheap, just cheaper) than other retailers because of this universal $350 off.

If you are looking for electronics, yes, they are massive disappointment but they said to me it's a function of choked supply chain (COVID and stuff) so they didn't really need to discount boxing day style. As OP said, most of them would have already been gone during Black Friday.

So in summary, I think boxing day was worthwhile because of clearances this year. Not like what we used to know Boxing Day before.

  • I reckon people who go early and first in line is looking to be on TV for the few seconds of fame (not bargain hunters), like the days people like up for product launch…

I'm going to go ahead a disagree, I tried to buy something online at Myer and the order was later rejected. I assume there was no stock. This is, imo, one of the biggest problem with buying things online during a sale. You will literally not buy at another store because you think you've got it. Now you have to pay full price.

    • Was your order click and collect or delivery?

      • Delivery.

        • Stock is fulfilled by the stores. What can happen is the stock gets sold out instore and then staff have nothing to grab.

    • These days, with capped cashbacks, I am finding it better to just get discounted Gift Cards instantly delivered, negotiate price, and buy the product in store.

  • Yes they should all just come on OzBargain so that we have more lurkers who ninja deals without commenting or contributing, that's just what we need.

you left out the majority now post rrp deals and very low discounts because they are selling things here…

  • I think if you know what you are getting, know what you want to get, and roughly the price they are going at, it's not a bad idea to go into the physical stores.
There are, I think, deals that don't get posted here because either lack of quantity, a store specific, something that's related to hobby that not many people are into (which people will mock sometimes I found), etc etc.

Though, I frankly enjoy sleeping in and absolutely cannot stand being in a crowd, so I rather forego those possibilities and sleep in.
That was before COVID, now, even more so.
