2020 Wrap Up: Top Deals, Discussions, Comments, Events

Well it's been an interesting year. Just a quick wrapup with a few stats.

In January, multiple EB Games locations were closing down and offering 20-60% off. It was even covered in the news. There was also this honoured "price error" offering 50% off at Garmin's site which resulted in Garmin contacting us.

At the beginning of the year, we were all recovering from the devasting bushfires, resulting in some freebies & discount for first responders. Little did first responders know what was coming up in the months following.

COVID-19 was first discussed on January 23 with some comments which in hindsight were very correct/not so correct.

In March, much of Australia went into lockdowns which saw a lot of companies offer freebies or businesses pivoting to serve customers remotely. The lockdown guide is a bit of an insight of the transition to the new normal.

We also saw the shortage of masks, toilet paper and hand sanitiser. At one point, hand sanitiser hit the $300/liter mark (see table and we had to impliment some profiteering rules.

We usually announce questionable features on April 1 but this year finally released an app.

Shopping Events: Click Frenzy was the biggest event with 4.54m pageviews, beating out Black Friday with 4.23m and Boxing Day with only 2.76m pageviews.

Here's to 2021. Hopefully we'll have some more in-person events when things are a bit more safe to do so.

So what are your memorable 2020 deals, forum posts, etc.?

Comments

  • It's quite clear that gaming has been the major focus over the past year from game discount deals to new console releases to graphics card mania. That's pretty great for the medium and industry. Long may that live on!

      Nice one Socrates 👍

Lysander and Dealbot by far MVP's and deserve a show of appreciation for their efforts…
JV most comments, that is not a surprise..but the question is, how many were useful?

  • The free case of Koyomi delivered 😀

the definition of quantity over quality ;)

    • After I perform my own proprietary weighted algorithms I think you'll find I was actually the highest quality poster.

    • at least 24 to 25 comment a day…

      would you like some more

Posts from hellopam while not being useful are memorable and certainly kept many entertained.

They prove that the ability of the mind to be creative or resourceful is still alive in these trying times.

  • I generally dont comment on OzB but the "PlayStation 5 Console" thread was the one thread where I commented so much that I got the Commentator badge.

Should be less fake Lego posts in future with the guy behind Lepin being locked up. https://7news.com.au/business/chinese-court-upholds-lego-cas…

    • Was there even many fake Lego posts? You gotta give Lepin some credit for actually making some high quality replicas of old discontinued sets.

    • I thought Lego brick patents, for the classic bricks like pictured, were expired and anyone can make their own version. The only issue being no one else can afford to make the same high quality molds that Lego uses, not if they want people to be able to afford the bricks.

      • You can make the bricks, but the designs are still copyrighted.

    • Ali remains a reliable source for "Lepining" and "Sembo" knockoffs of all sorts.

There's people selling MOC instructions which are obtained and suddenly available to buy on Al undercutting the author by $$$.

      Then there's Ian.
Here we see his 2020 MOC collection on Flickr.
Here's the Ali page to buy most of them.
      Perhaps Ian's a designer for Sembo/Lepining ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Oo made it into the year wrap up. Surprised it’s a thread that’s still somewhat active.

      Yep, you peaked in 2020.

Aged like fine wine. Then shattered the hopes of everyone.

        To a better 2021.

Yes, please let us know what doomsday event you are predicting for 2021.

          • @neil: NSW outbreak, become new Victoria of 2021.

            • @ATangk: WA, NT and SA will join and form a separate country and break away from "the infected"

This year I scored a 4K TV, thanks to Click Frenzy and those who posted the forum post etc. 1 boring Wednesday night at work, refreshing the page, punching in a random number resulted in that, so was pretty happy 🙂 then 4K purchases came along and drained the bank account lol

Usual idiots in the forums. Missed competition entries which causes Fomo when the winners page lights up with a bunch of winners lol

It's certainly been an interesting year!

  • I just want a nintendo game and watch.

Big chunk of Lysanders posts should be combined into 1 or 2 pots.
Never understood why they can be allowed to constantly post epic games discounted with coupon deals when the coupon itself is the deal not the games.

    • Please just let this go.
We have all heard you - a lot of people appreciate the posts and you don't and that is perfectly fine as there are posts I find absolutely superfluous and would not allow as deals but they are which is fine because they help other people who find them useful.
Again, I heard your argument so no need for repeating. But just because I hear someone's argument and can see where they are coming from does not mean i have to agree with it.
I could argue that a lot of the posts are superfluous as all of us could go through the catalogues and sales ourselves. Part of the deal and attraction of Ozbargain is that someone does that work for you and you get the offers served to you so all you have to do is decide whether you like the offer and whether you want to buy it.
If you go through posts here (and on other forums) you would not believe how many people still missed the daily freebies - one part of the problem seem to be deals that just list too much and only have a few games in the title (which of course is due to character limitations) so all the other stuff is missed so easily.
If you do not like my posts, just exclude them from your feed. I think it is easy to do and then you never have to be bothered by my posts (or me) again.
In any case, I wish you a lovely Saturday and a beautiful Sunday, wherever you are and whatever you do.

        Wow so defensive
The reality remains… i would say 50% of your posts for games are that are only cheaper because of the Epic Store Voucher.
So i stand by my statement that the Voucher is the deal.

Is the $15 coupon a deal? sure is.
Is a game that is only cheaper with the coupon a deal? Nope

Looking back on many of your comments it appears you do not like being called out on things so i guess i must of touched a sore spot.

        • -1

First of all it is "must have", not "must of".
Secondly, no you have not. I know it is your opinion and that is fine for me. I totally accept it. All I say is repeating it will not change my opinion and approach, especially given the very positive feedback I receive from many others.
It has nothing to do with being called out - I just think there are better things to do than repeating the same thing over and over again, especially if it has already been made clear that persistently repeating things over will not change anything.
We just have to agree to disagree.

As I said, you have a choice of ignoring/blocking my posts.
Plus, you talk about Epic post who are far from being the majority of my posts. I think Epic is maybe 5% of games deals I post so that is hardly a majority and therefore the voucher has no relevance in 95% of the deals I post and even with the Epic ones many are freebies where again the voucher is of no relevance.
Let me put it this way:

If I can buy Griftlands for $23 in the Steam Sale or for $8 in the Epic Store using the voucher I would want to be alerted to that. Many people even forget they have a voucher - just look at previous threads where people comment about exactly this.

Anyway, thank you for your opinion and your contribution. Much appreciated.
          Have a great weekend.

          • @Lysander: 👍 Beggars can't be choosers.

          • @Lysander: Thank you for your posts! Congrats on being the “most deals posted” poster!!

P.S. I never once clicked on your epic voucher/coupon deals, on purpose, probably one/many of your other 2299(?) posts 😁. Thanks for putting the effort into what you did. I appreciate it 👍

  • It'd be nice if there was a summary of who was the most censored user in certain periods. How many of the top user's posts were deleted by mods.

    • Not entirely sure what you are asking.

The top reason for deal removal are duplicates as the deal has already been posted. So for October that equates to 30% removed for being a duplicate by a mod and a further 13% that are self-removed in most cases due to being a duplicate. Those who post a lot of deals generally know how to look for duplicates before posting however there are times when everyone is trying to post at the same time (e.g. Epic Deals, Woolies at 5pm Monday etc.)

      • What's happening with the November Transparency Report?

        • Will be combined with December like last year's.
