Hey,

I've seen this deal on HP's website for a while. So while the sale ends tomorrow it might come back.

This is an awesome deal for the price, really only limited by the GPU. This laptop is highly regarded and has great cooling.

Review of the 1660 Ti version: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i292_YrT6H8&t=3s

1660 Ti version with 1TB SSD is $1000 more.

Be aware there is also a 250nit version as well, this includes the brighter, more colour accurate display.

JB Hi Fi have a poorer specced model for the same price: https://www.jbhifi.com.au/products/hp-omen-15-en0028ax-15-6-…

There are also more expensive Intel versions with higher end GPU's.

Better value than the Legion 5: https://www.lenovo.com/au/en/laptops/legion-laptops/legion-5…

Includes free shipping, offers returns.

I bought this laptop 2 days ago, delivered yesterday and I already filed for its return. The cooling is nice but the fan sounds like a jet engine when on even minimal load. This can be overlooked but also the fan still spins on lower rpm even when idle, it's quiet on startup but once it gets triggered and starts, it doesn't stop. It's soo distracting for me as it is still very audible. I Googled around and found a bunch of people with this issue. All possible solutions I tried didn't work.
Someone here can give it a go. Maybe I got a defective unit. But with the number of cases online, I wasn't interested anymore on a replacement.
And before I forget. The battery life is atrocious, barely 4hrs. More like 3hrs 30minutes.

Wow that sucks, every review has been positive about the cooking and fan noise. Looks like the legion is the champ then.

    • I've had the same experience with every HP performance laptop I've ever used - shit half a dozen. I've given up on HP fur that reason, despite their laptops offering great value. Such a shame.

1650 ti and 144hz,? Not at this price

    • Do u have some alternatives, I'm really looking to buy a laptop and my main interest is being able to hook up my 2 144hz monitors. So ports and direct link to the GPU matters to me

      • To run at 144hz you will need a laptop that has a display port. I don't know any laptops that has 2 display ports so you might need to purchase a separate docking station

        • +1

Some laptops have DisplayPort and hdmi. I can confirm my monitor supports hdmi upto 144hz. I already tested it with this Omen

        • This is not a desktop where you connect the GPU to the monitor using a display port to get 144Hz. Of course it can do 144Hz. The screen is attached to the rest of the hardware internally.

        • My Legion Y530 has display port and USB C with display port, there should be others.

      Found anything better?

      • No I havnt. Still looking. Ofcourse there are a few out there but I'm trying to keep it $1500

        • With most of TSMCs 7nm production for AMD going to the consoles, the Ryzen 4000 chips are getting harder to source.

          • +1

@ditroia: To be honest. I'm not much of a gamer to keep up with ever changing graphic card and the constant changes in system requirements. I have a PS5 for gaming. The only reason I am looking at gaming laptops is because of the graphic cards in them and not actually for gaming. I need a laptop to take full advantage of the 1440p 144hz monitors I use for work. If you have any suggestions, I'm more than happy to check them out.

            • @NigerianPrince: Go for the legion 5 if on sale or wait for the ryzen 5000 / RTX 3000 models. The combination is great for productivity.

My 2018 Legion Y530 with a 15.6" 144hz 300 nit 100% SRGB has been great. It also runs quiet and cool, although mine is only an i5 8300h.

There's also this Dell, but it's more expensive and the display is not as good.

    • I know these guys aren't a 'name brand' but I'm a fan of them and this is good deal for $1738 + shipping (upgrade to AMOLED display for $349 lol):
      Metabox PC50DC, NVIDIA GTX 1660Ti 6GB GDDR6, Intel i7-10875H 8-Core, 15.6" FHD Edge-to-Edge Matte 144Hz LED, 16GB DDR4 2666MHZ Memory, WD Blue 500GB PCIe M.2

  • Does a higher hz screen like 144hz put extra load on the GPU when gaming?

    • Higher FPS will put more strain on the GPU. If you were to run a game at 60FPS, the load on the GPU would be the same for a 60Hz display and 144Hz display. Having a 144Hz means the game can run up to 144FPS so no disadvantage getting a high refresh rate screen

      • +1

This is not entirely accurate - if you run a game at a mismatched rate to the screen, it will often 'tear' with horizontal lines across the screen - this can be fixed by enabling v-sync in the graphics settings, which forces the game to run at the same frame rate as the screen, but then the game looks choppy instead.

TLDR; To look good, the GPU works harder with ALL higher settings, including refresh rate.

        • So I’ve done some reading. Enabling v-sync drops the monitor refresh rate to match the GPU FPS. It does not make GPU work harder. The answer to my question is therefore no.

        • True, you could run at 72fps (half of 144hz) or 48fps (a third of 144) without tearing if my understanding is correct.

        • It might have adaptive sync (Freesync/G-sync compatible) although I can't find any specs suggesting if it does or not. If that's the case, the refresh rate will match whatever the frame rate of the game is.

  • I don't get how they can make a 1650 ti fit in a laptop but they can't make a 1650ti low profile version. Same with higher end cards that are in laptops but no low profile version…?

    • Because with a laptop they make a huge profit while on the PC the sweet spot for profit us the midrange 1060, 1660, 2060, 3060 and the super and ti versions.

    • Because… laptop chips and desktop chips are not the same despite identical chip models?
Are you asking for the laptop chip to be ported to the desktop form-factor?

      • Laptop chips are limited by receiving less power.

        • And have different number of shader cores, streams, clock speed, etc… they're not the same chip.

          • @jkim: Nope - they're the same physical chips, just with power restrictions these restrictions limit the clock speeds they can get up to and the memory bandwidth.

            • +1

@Nukkels: That only holds true for some models. Others have less/more shaders, cores, streams. If they are different in nr. of shaders/cores/streams, it's effectively a different chip on the same architecture.

      • Yeh I like to see a higher end cards that can fit in SFF cases.

  • If you have eBay plus this might be worth considering.
Asus Tuf 15 with 1660ti for just under $50 more.
Using code PLUSJY10 comes to $1717.06

I don't recognise the seller, but rating and history seems good.
Only 2 available so not worthy of a separate post.

That one has really bad cooling.

      • +1

Not a particularly good screen either.

  • +5

Quite expensive for a 1650 Ti. You should be able to get a 1660 Ti at this price, even a 2060 in some laptops. Especially considering new laptop GPU's are just around the corner.

    • +1

You should but GPUs are at an all time price high.

      • +2

Crazy how much prices have fluctuated on gaming laptops. In december, 1660 / 2060 laptops were common around this price. Now they are all 2k+

        • Hence the deal. Better value than a base Mac air.

    • +1

      And new Ryzen parts too.

  • +3

Let's be honest the 1650ti is not exactly a capable card. The minimum that they should be running with is a 1660ti

    • I get by with a 1050 Ti and this is better the main factor is the lack of VRAM.

    • +1

      i got a 1650 one , not even Ti :(
Runs all the games for now , not sure how long more…Looking for laptop with Zen3+3xxx combo end of this year hopefully

I have a 1650 laptop I picked up from Dell for $900 couple of months back and I am happy as, because I don't care about latest titles. there's so may great games that run smooth on 1650! who cares about anything faster.

When I can buy a 3050 laptop (when they show up) for $900 - in 3 years maybe? I will switch to titles released this year. win win

  • +2

Definitely not a good time to buy for gaming laptop after missing out the great bargains just 2-3 weeks ago .

  • bring us rtx2060 one

  • If you're looking at this as a gaming laptop the 1650ti will be pretty mediocre. Would look at something like https://www.harveynorman.com.au/acer-nitro-5-15-6-inch-i7-10… instead.

3080 laptops are just around the corner

  • really only limited by the GPU.

So is every OZB notebook deal.
