Going a Bit Nutty - What's Everyone's Favourite Nut?

Long time listener but first time caller.

Mild rant: was on the way home and the partner asked me to pick up some health snacks as part of our new year's resolution to be less fat and was surprised at how much nuts costs! $30 for a 750g bag of cashews and same size bag of almonds!

Was almost tempted to get two packs of Tim Tams instead, as they satisfy a earthly and spiritual hunger that nuts can never do.

How can everyone afford to be so healthy?!

Question: where does everyone buy their nuts from? Can't be from the supermarkets..

Bonus: what's everyone's favourite nut? I love macadamia, except its always a hit and miss with the salt. Most of the time it's over salted.

    • Yeh and they cost $80 a kg.

    • Pine nuts.

They're my favourite…. Except for the price!

I'm a raw nut fan in particular. Loving people's posts with shops I haven't tried. Thanks OP.

One thing I love that I have so much trouble tracking down are nuts in shell. I find cracking them relaxing sometimes, and it's also a method of potion control.

Does anyone have a good source for nuts in shell?

      Yes. Grow them.

Almond trees are pretty easy to grow. My parents have a few. They're amazing fresh from the tree. Very different taste to roasted.

I always pick a bucket-load, take them home, and munch on them for the next month. You can also wait until the husk splits on the tree, pull out the shell and nut, and then dry them as is under the sun. They'll last a whole year that way.

      • Yes good point.

Planning to grow my own orchard with every nut i can find, but won't be until i find a new home which could be a long time, hopefully not.

I don't know how long nut trees take to give a sizable harvest. I've only so far had tiny ones not yet flowering, and my grandmother had giants. Do you know?

Off the top of my head, you'll be waiting about 3 or 4 years before your tree starts having a decent crop. It may vary between species.

If you don't have a long-term home to grow them, try using a community garden, or your parent's place.

No time like the present to organise your nutty long-term plans.

          • @deek: haha

thanks! are you a gardener too?

Yes you are right. Problem is I am forced to move interstate and the quarantine is a problem. But i am considering starting as soon as i cross the border at the rental place in pots that i can then move and plant at my new home when i find one.

@bargain huntress: I just like to potter around. Some citrus trees, herbs, and vegies. And one passionfruit vine that I have carefully teased beyond the reach of the local possums.

Good luck with your plans. Nice idea of initially cultivating the trees in pots. That should work for a year or two, but I wouldn't leave them longer than that, otherwise they'll become root-bound.

              • @deek: thank you

it's going to be very very hard leaving my current garden behind

yeah i don't want them to just reach nutting age and then blow over in the first big storm

These are my favorite nuts (raw, unsalted), and often buy them wherever they're on sale, but Aldi is my go to when I run out of them:

    • Macadamia (super expensive though)
    • Almonds
    • Walnuts and
    • Pecans (slightly more expensive too)
  • Love to buy honey roasted cashews from ALDI :p

  • You're obviously new to nuts.

Almonds are widely consumed nuts so needed a category for themselves.

PS: peanuts are legumes, but might as well leave them in the poll as it's part of their name.

  • I am surprised no one chimed in with Betel nuts.
Not that I have tried them but it is a popular custom with some Asian cultures.

Make mine pistachios… hold the baklava (my personal kryptonite!)

Almonds of course - doesn't appear as a separate item in the poll?

Also - assume that you are aware of how much fat there is in most nuts. If you've started a low fat diet, you should be reading up on this…..

  • My favourite is the 'conspiracy nut'. They never get old!

  • +2

This should really be a multiple choice poll. I can't get enough of both macadamia and roast hazelnuts. Roast almonds are good too. Lightly roasted cashews are delicious. And who could say no to roast pistachios?

Now wonder I struggle to lose weight.:-|

Bunya nuts followed by boiled peanuts.

  • Why no almonds in the list?

  • peanus

  • hard to pick one nut as it’s all based on context…

    hazelnuts in chocolates

    pistachios lightly salted

    walnuts in cakes or cereal

cashews lightly toasted, in desserts or cashew & pea curry

    peanuts toasted or spread

almonds as is or sliced in desserts

  • Voting for raw cashews. Bought 9kgs from this deal https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/548660
Finished them in 2 months:( Alone:)

How are you old enough to be on the internet but not know how much food costs??

  • You can roast nuts yourself too.

Just use a cereal bowl about half full.

Walnuts you can roast in the microwave. Do a minute first then 30 second bursts. Must move them all with a spoon between each burst. Do it till the flavour changes a bit. Wait till its cool before trying.

Almonds too. A bit of lemon or lime to coat them all and some salt then roast in the microwave try 2 mins, then 1 min, then 30 sec bursts till you hear some pooping or see them splitting. Got to move them all with a spoon between each burst. Dont let too many of them get black.

  • What about Pine nuts?! They are phenomenal raw or lightly toasted and you can have them as is or pop them in a pasta, on a pizza, in a salad, thru a stirfry, on top of roasted veggies etc etc Delicious!
