Google Pixel 5 128GB 5G (Unlocked) $849 Delivered @ Telstra

2261

Telstra is also having a sale on the Pixel 5 model. $150 off RRP. These are rarely on sale.

Can be purchased outright without a plan it seems.

Price match at JB hifi and use 5% discounted gift cards as it seems Officeworks is refusing to price match due to “Telstra price error” - highly doubt it as it would’ve been fixed by now

They go pretty good, just different. Would feel like going back to a tablet almost. Just seems the mic can't hear you as well (with assistant), the earpiece speaker isn't as clear or loud (as it's behind the screen), loud speaker not as good, rear camera not as good. The screen res is better on the 3xl I thought mostly just bigger but and different aspect. The 5 just isn't a flagship phone, $1k not $1500 type of thing. Will be updates for years though. With Bluetooth headphones it's fine, got some of those Sony's WH-1000XM4 that pair up real well, and have the high res codecs, assistant and other smarts etc.

Seem to see a refresh logo fairly often, or stuff can take bit longer to load, could be the slower cpu. Much the same user interface and experience though

Offer is now back on the Telstra website with updated wording saying you need to purchase it on a plan to receive the discount, however it still seems to be letting me purchase it outright for $849 (unconfirmed as I didn't complete the checkout process).

    • +1

Confirmed I was able to check out for $849 outright and received confirmation email, so will see how it goes from there. Was a bit disappointed when the price went back up to 999 a few days ago while I was trying to make up my mind about it. The battery on my 4 year old S8 started dropping from about 15-20% to 0 in those few days so have taken that as a sign to pull the trigger on it

      • Just pulled trigger as well. No issue with buying outright on $849 and received order confirm email. I don't have plan with Telstra. Gonna see how it goes, hopeful they won't cancel it and ask me to choose a plan :(

        • Just confirming mine went through and was delivered, no worries

          • @Virtus: Same for me :) Waiting at home right now for the delivery

        • What kind of plan are you on? Just curious who other than telstra offers 5G. I've never had a5g phone before, but am considering this deal.

    • Why?

Did Google get upset at Telstra because Officeworks and JB hi-fi were complaining? JB hi-fi did say it was below cost and seeking rebate from Google.

But surely Telstra with all their expertise would be able to technically block sale.

      So why?

      • It sounds to me like Telstra didn't advertise it properly, that's not Google's fault. If Telstra had said "with the purchase of a plan" from the get go and didn't allow outright purchases at the sale price, they wouldn't be forced to price match.

  • I just got JB Hornsby to match with no issues mainly because you have to make an appointment to go to the Telstra shop and they want someone home with id for delivery all just too hard

  • do you know if boost plans are compatible as its a 5g phone?

    • +1

The phone is unlocked so it will work with any provider.

If you are asking specifically about 5g, boost customers do not have access to it.

      • thanks @codeXD will need to decide whether to migrate to another provider plan or see if boost will support 5g.

    • +1

Boost prepaid 4g, using the 300gb 12 month Sim without a problem - obviously backwards compatible just not 5g speeds. It's great for a cheap plan with decent about of data, will see what 5g plans there are next time.

      • I was confused when I saw on the google site:

"Requires a 5G data plan (sold separately). 5G service and roaming not available on all mobile networks or in all areas. Contact operator for details about current 5G network performance, compatibility and availability. Phone connects to 5G networks, but 5G service, speed and performance depend on many factors including, but not limited to, operator network capabilities, device configuration and capabilities, network traffic, location, signal strength and signal obstruction. Actual results may vary. Some features are not available in all areas. Data rates may apply. Subscriptions may apply. See g.co/pixel/networkinfo for info."

But you are saying it will work with boost 4g plan?

        • +1

Yes it will 100% work with boost 4g plan.

          • @CodeXD: Thanks

            • @shavo30: It will 1000%, I'm using that combo now until my new pixel 3 xl gets delivered

  • can't seem to put through the order via Telstra outright without a plan like some here were able to. Help?

    • On the screen with list of plans, don't select any, scroll down and click next.

      • yes and it then shows an error during ID verification saying you need to go back and choose a plan to continue.

        • Agree, I have been trying to check out for a while and it comes up with the error as I hadn't added a plan

          • @martinNavdiwala: Yeah and people keep saying you can. No it's expired they changed it. Outright was possible without plan last month not any more

  • Anyone else's sunrise alarm not working? The screen should light up from orange-yellow before the alarm goes off.
Also, not sure if it's just me but the pixel 5 doesn't seem as good at hearing voice commands compared to my Pixel 3 XL. My refurbished phone is due back any day so will have to consider whether to use it for a while in addition or sell 'as new'. Don't know if it makes sense having more than one handset but could be handy.

    • Don't sell a refurb phone 'as new', it is literally a refurb.

      • Yes obviously state that

        • You can set the condition as 'refurb' it should not mention 'as new' at all.

          • @CodeXD: Correct.

            • @G-rig: In the past have been given a new replacement, will see what they actually send but they mentioned something and the IMEI is different. Probably getting to that age there may not be much Brand new stock, but amazon were selling I thought (albeit bloody pink)

      • Ha , brand New ;)

The only thing better about the pixel 5 is the battery

  • Received the phone back (marked refurbished and in a smaller slim box, phone only). Wondering if this is the usual procedure for a replacement, within warranty?
Luckily I didn't send all the accessories back, as I only received the phone, everyone can do with extra chargers. Anyway I've asked Google about it. Cheers

  • Go to JB, will they price match - yes. Do they have any stock - no.
Go to Office Works, will they price match - yes. Do they have any stock - no, but they CAN order it in.
Go to Telstra store, they have it, but only in black ( really want the sage colour).
Next day, go back to OW, try to perform the same deal, 'sorry but we don't price match Telstra'.

    Sigh.

    • My husband successfully price matched at OW over the phone today if it helps.

  • My husband got Officeworks to price beat this today over the phone. So paid $809.

  • So I have also tried to purchase the phone outright via store but keeps giving me a error after I enter my details (license details) and won't let me proceed to the next page. I think telstra may have caught on.

JB HiFi - I went into the store and the store manager didn't want to price match the $849 since the condition is now 'on eligible plans' - I even showed them the checkout page where it won't appear but they searched up the page on thier own system.

I then called another JB HiFi they said they don't price match 'Carrier' mobile stores.

Good guys - They just straight up said no to price matching unless it was from Harvey Normal, Good guys or JB.

Having no luck here and really don't want to pay in the 900 range for this phone. Hoping for a eBay sale soon.

    • Just an update, noticed the offer today now says 'avaliable outright OR on selected plan.'

I went to JB again and they were able to price match the $849.

  • Neither JB or OW price match this and the Telstra wedsite wont checkout without selecting a plan. I can't see how can you get on this price

    • I believe only the people who got the deal last month can buy outright

      • I've just made an outright purchase tonight at $849. Didn't select a plan, hit next and went through checkout with the discount applied. Will see how whether it gets delivered.

        • Hmm how? I thought you need to ID yourself and the process will fail half way

          • @neonlight: I went through the ID process and it all just approved and worked. I did have a MyTelstra account from when I used to have Telstra about 6 years ago but that has no plans attached etc.

Edit: Actually, I just went back to the Telstra website and it actually states under the $150 of promo "Available Outright or Pay Monthly on a eligible plan."

  • Shame you can't hear anything if speaking on the phone somewhere noisy.. guess they're designed for Bluetooth headphones these days. A notch and a Proper speaker is surely better

  • +1

Just to add my own experience - as others have stated it looks like Telstra has updated their webpage and there is a very clear option of buying it outright for $849. Went to my local officeworks and although I had to wait a few minutes for them to confirm that you could outright buy without a plan for that price, paid $806.55 but most officeworks won't have them on hand and their devices need to be shipped out from the warehouse, usually taking a couple days (can be c&c or delivered). Also, in Sydney their warehouse currently only has the sorta sage colour in stock, and none of the black ones.

    • Cool so you can do price beat at Officeworks? did you walk in. Did they not give you a lame excuse saying they don;t pricematch carrier branded devices? or how did they go into saying the carrier plan is not required?

      • yeah walked in store and told them about Telstra's price (made sure I told them that you can buy the phone outright without a plan for $849) and they looked up the price themselves, then asked the manager if they price beat Telstra. Manager asked if a plan wasn't required, they can beat it.

I think it might be easier now than the last couple weeks to price beat because Telstra's website clearly shows there's a "buy outright" option.

        • Same, that's how it was at the beginning, pull up the Telstra site on their computer, scroll down to where you can select The outright price.. I got the $806 price too, receipt further up in this thread

          • @G-rig: Good on you, that it worked for you.

The OW I went, came up with the excuse of "It does not say it is not locked with Telstra"

And JB disagreed due to "offer only available with eligible Telstra plan"

            • @martinNavdiwala: Well that was pretty close to when the first deal was advertised, no idea why both stores are resisting giving it to people for even the same price bit office works should do the price beat.

  • Anyone else notice that the phone is pretty bad at 'hearing' you in the car, guess the microphone is under the screen as well as the speakers, pretty rubbish design?

    • You car's bluetooth system mic should be picking up your voice in this case… Not the phone itself.

      • That could explain it mate, got a 3.5mm bluetooth receiver in an AUX jack in the glove box.
        Cheers

      • Just tested it again in the car , without Bluetooth connected.. almost have to yell. It mustn't like the background noise.

Some Reddit users suggest blowing compressed air in the holes at the bottom, tried blowing some air from mouth doesn't do much. Will have a bit more of a search.
