  • Hi all,

If anyone is thinking of this deal and you are with Telstra, the guys at Broadway JB in Sydney are OK with you porting to optus same day and then taking up this deal. I did this December last year and asked how long I needed to be ported out and they said they don't really care. Speak to the guy with the American accent. Forget his name.

  • I'm tempted. I changed my $55 telstra plan to a $20 a month Coles (Optus) plan a few months ago with plan to jump back to Telstra once a good deal came up but honestly haven't had many issues with Coles so probably best to stay where I am. I do miss the visual voicemail.

    • My exact thoughts, mrs is on Aldi for $25 a month and seriously no issues with it. But that bloody giftcard is lucrative!!!!

      • Same here $23 Optus old plan. Unlimited data now too. Can’t resist $500 voucher.

        • +2

          Let's do some maths here.
500$ is good if you have plans to use it.
If you are selling the GC, it will go for say $450.
          That equates to 450/12 = $37.5
You are paying 59$ a month.
          Comes to $21.50 per month
What you do get is 80GB a month (you decide if that is of value to you)

So, if you are paying anything under $21.50 per month, and happy with your provider, don't switch.

          Again, apply your discretion.

    • Damn me too. Felix @ unlimited data @ $35 is awesome but I just broke my phone so…

      • Do u want international minutes ?

        • Nah. Felix have that as an add on if I did

  • Can anyone help advise, I was thinking of signing up and using the voucher to a Mac M1. I may eventually go back overseas when the borders open so in the next 3-6 months (optimistically) if I cancel early would I be out money or would I still have a net gain if I needed to cancel after say 3 months or so?

  • -1

Does the giftcard have an expiration date?

    • +2

No expiry on the gift card

    • No

Edit: How did I not see the earlier reply? Ignore.

  • +1

Has anyone tried calling Telstra after signing up to get an additional $10 off?

    • Read the fine print, you'll have to pay back the gift card.

5.1 If you cancel, recontract, move to an ineligible plan or change your minimum monthly spend of your JB Hi-Fi and The Good Guys BYO Mobile Plan during the minimum term, you will also be charged a Voucher Reimbursement Cancellation Fee. This will be in addition to the Early Termination Charge above, as well as any accessory payments that may apply.

Would it be correct in assuming if reducing the monthly payment for the plan that this would trigger this ?

      • I've done it last time as Telstra is not involved/aware of the JB gift card

        • +1

I believe last year the plan was just called a BYO plan in the Telstra portal not a "JB HIFI/ GOOD GUYS PLAN" and the fine print above didn't exist.

          • @retainer: Correct. TL;DR - you’ll regret having to pay the gift card back if you cancel early now

            • @Dealhunter967671: Not sure, but I think it has a maximum and it's pro-rata like the other ETC fee itself.

              • @affinity: Yeah that’s right.

Pro-rata GC (max $500) + Pro-rata 50% of remaining plan value as ETC (max $414)

  • Are you still eligible for the $5 Kayo subscription with this?

  • I was gonna join that $35 a month Felix mobile deal and kill my home internet.

This would be 24 a month more, ie, $288 more over the year, and I get a $500 voucher, so $212 in the pocket to go to this deal over Felix. Based on previous JB/Telstra deals, it's unlimited but slowed when you hit the 80gb, would anyone know the speed it slows to? 5mb/s and I'd probs go with Felix, but if 20 or so like Voda does, I see no real reason to not go with this one.

    • +2

      1.5mbps

      • +1

Oh shit. I was on hold to JB then to ask if I could come in and sign up at like 8 or so as I'm busy today, 1.5 is a (profanity) joke, I'll be getting Felix it looks like. Legend.

  • +1

So pretty much the benefit here is getting 12 month Telstra contract for $17.33 per month (if you have something to use the $500 voucher).

Great if you want Telstra contract and need lots of data, but there are heaps of cheap contract out for the $20 mark anyway.

Still a great deal, Just probably not for everyone.

    • Yeah, but you can sell that GC for $450 easy.

What other networks do you recommend? I don't see much value for $20 from other services.

      • I am paying $21 on moose mobile (Optus network), for 20g. clearly inferior. just a toss up whether it is worth the effor.

        • Yeah, I don't really need the $500 GC either. I am looking to build a house tho, I just don't know if JB ever has the best prices.

20GB isn't that much tho, tho I doubt I even use that much.

  • Thanks OP. Ported from Woolworths (had to wait an hour for it to complete as Woolies Mobile delays the port for an hour)

  • Can I order an esim for this plan after I signed up the contract with JB HiFi?

    • +1

I just added a Telstra One Number for $5/month onto mine for an Apple Watch.

      • I did the same thing via the Watch app on my iPhone.

  • Do you get the gift card straight away?

    • after port in successfully

  • +1

Hi, I just bought a Vodafone prepaid SIM card from Coles for $10( on special from $30) and ported my number to it. Took about a couple of hours to port over to Vodafone. Then went in to JB Hifi in Westfield Sydney store, and ported back to this deal! Walaa, worked beautifully, got my $500 gc and a new plan.

My old Telstra plan expires 17/3 soi paid $7 to get out of contract.

Try not to go to the Strand in Sydney as the rep in that store said you’d have to out of Telstra contract for at least 30 days. So my advise call around and see who’s lenient

    • +2

The person at the store I went to in VIC said it's the system that won't go any further if this issue is triggered rather than the person..

    • +3

Buy the plan under new number and later ask Telstra online rep to merge to old existing number. Can double check before when in doubt

  • I'm considering jumping on this or similar deal at a later point - but need some advice. I would likely use this plan as my main internet connection - hotspotting my various devices to it. I work and study from home 3 - 5 days and have a few ~30 minute meetings a week. Currently my data usage is well under 100GB/month, but it's a fast and stable NBN connection. Can I viably substitute a Telstra mobile service for home broadband with this use case?

Also considering a Telstra 5G wireless modem if a good deal comes up like https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/608617

EDIT: Also wondering what happens on this mobile plan if I go over the 80GB - does it shape (like the wifi modem plan) or will be charged arms & legs for extra data?

    • +2

      Shape

      • Cheers - just found it in a critical info summary:

No Excess Data Charges In Australia
Once you exceed your included data allowance, your speed will
be capped at 1.5Mbps, and slowed further in busy periods.
This means it is not suitable for HD video or high speed
applications and means that some webpages, videos, social
media content and files may take longer to load, but you can
still stream video in standard definition, listen to music,
browse the web and access social media, even if the
experience is slower sometimes. Heavy data users (users in
the top 1% of all data users) may experience slower speeds
than other users during busy periods.

    • There's no reason why your usage would change just because you're using a different connection method. I believe all Telstra mobile plans now shape, but check the T&Cs.

      • I'm more concerned about fidelity of the mobile connection affecting meetings and file downloads (possibly losing connection and having to re-download large files). For these reasons I would only consider using Telstra - just curious of others' experience.

    • +1

i would ask jb hi staff if they could do the mobile broadband deal and throw in $500 gift card you never know they might say yes as its $59 / mth too?

  • Does anyone know if JB HiFi Camberwell can port out and port back in instore?

  • Does this apply to BYOD too?

  • Jbhifi Brunswick rejected due to only being out of Telstra two weeks. Said they were absolutely enforcing one month minimum.

    • how did they know you out of Telstra only two weeks? you told them?

      • +2

The system picks it up when the order is placed.

        • Yep system picked it up, not the employee

  • +2

Is it possible to sign up with a new number then swap out the new number with another Telstra prepaid number?

  • +1

I'm with Boost, i know i can't port my number. But what if i took out a new number? Cheers

    • With a new number…Yes you can

  • I had chat with Telstra and they said JBHIFI plans wont support 10$ international pack. When they signup it may be added but not after that. Anyone tried to check with jbhifi team before opt for this plan.

    • +1

I tried. You can’t add international calling pack to this plan

      • Thank you. i cant opt for this one :(

  • +1

    Thanks OP.
Got 3 new connections $1,500 gift card (3* $500) handed on spot ;)

  • I just signed this plan. But how can I add a device repayment plan to this one? On telstra website I can't. Does that mean JB plan is eligible for add a 24 month device Payment plan.

    • Talked to Telstra, and telstra told me that for JB plan, you can’t add any device repayment plan!!! No one told me that before…

I have to cancel it but JBhifi told me that they can’t cancel and ask me to contact Telstra as Telstra is the service provider. And Telstra ask me to contact JB hifi as JB hifi is the seller.

Did anyone successfully cancel the JB plan before?

      Thanks

  • Probably a silly question, but has anyone had any success doing this over the phone? I can't make it to a store today sadly…

  • If I sign up to this from Optus can I sign up for $5/month Kayo?

  • I want to sign the deal but I cannot really utilise the 80gb. How do you guys do? I am with another carrier which gives me plenty of data and international calls. Any advise? Thanks

  • I was on Telstra for a previous deal, completed 12 months. Opted to Optus last year and today got this deal. Really quick and simple.

  • Just went in and signed up to this - took about 20 minutes! Opted from Amaysim, fantastic deal if you plan on buying anything from JB!

  • +1

Thanks OP. In and out within 30 mins

  • I was able to sign up for the deal earlier today at JB Hi-Fi Shellharbour (NSW). It was less than 24 hours after I had ported to Catch Connect (Optus). Luckily for me they didn't enforce the 30 day cooling off period. Was with Boost before port out to Catch.

  • What's JB best known for? I mean price wise?

My best mates brother works at HN, so in reality hell able able to get me the best price on literally anything JB sells.

Is it easy to sell the GC on here for $450?

    • Yes, 425 (15% off)will make it sell like a hot cake. 450 (10% off) will still do if people want to buy something soon.

  • so the store person told me that the cheapest way would be to cancel in the 11th month, can some explain this to me please?

  • Just got one …. Telstra sim is in now as e sim compared to Kogan sim. Kogan sim has 4 bars and Telstra is on 2…. wtf . No reason in this area should it be less then 3

  • So as an existing customer can i add a new service or do I have to port in?

    • Can add a new service and get the gift card. Just did that myself

      • +2

Thank you! 2 new services added $1000 gc on the spot. See you all next year 🤣

  • +4

I am currently an existing Telstra customer (contract ending in 3 days).

I signed up for a new number today and added that number to my existing Telstra account (home internet, current mobile).

Activated and working so i went on live chat and asked for my current plan to be cancelled and for that number to be migrated across to the $69 BYO plan (what they can see on their end).

Clarified with the chat person that current number is taking new number's plan and she said yes. Asked her to proceed with the migration. Done.

    • +1

what did you write to the chat operator to get the messages?

I tried this afternoon but the operator said “ I am sorry for the inconvience. I wish I could help you with that, as we dont have any option to tranfer the services from one number to another number.”

      • Find another operator or do it at different times of day.

      • +3

This is a screen shot of what I said exactly.

        https://ibb.co/mJvF2XY

Edit: For what it's worth, the operator's name was Bernadeath.

        • Thanks for sharing the details - hope I could get to the right operator

          • +1

@kungfupanda: Took me over an hour and a half but I just managed to cancel my old service keep old number and it is now on new plan. Only 1 operator just massive delays between messages. The first one I got was telling me that cancelling my plan was going to cause an early termination charge, as she was talking about my plan from today. I thought I was clear.. and got a bit worried at that point, but just explained and got told no worries.

First said it would be 24-48 hours for my number to be disconnected and to check back tomorrow. I said thanks and was about to go but my sim dropped out immediately. I mentioned that and said is it possible to transfer the number now? Was on wifi so by the time I put the new sim in it was already on my old number. Worth it for $500 JB dollars

            • +1

@stevem42: Cool - yes I just managed to get to the right person who knows what I want.

I forgot to take a copy of the chat transcript :(
Was there an option to save the chat and send to email? or is it manual using screenshot only?

              • +1

@kungfupanda: I did it through the mytelstra app, the history is always saved on there, like a message thread. Not sure otherwise sorry

                • @stevem42: oh ok 👍
I changed from app to use laptop browser because I kept getting two different operators who didn’t know the “merge” services using the app.

Using laptop browser got me to the right person who I really appreciate and thank.

                • @stevem42: have you checked the plan you have after the migration?

                  • +1

                    @kungfupanda: I hadn't…

But just checked and looks as it should. JB plan, expiry 10 March 2022

        • Finally I got to a person who knows what we want.

After finishing the chat, I don’t get the option to save a copy of the chat and send to my email, did you know such option - for future?

  • Can you port out if you’re existing Telstra say to Kogan and port back in as an eSim?

  • Thanks OP! Just got mine now!

  • +1

    Lesssss Gooooooooooooo :D

I previously joined the BYO deal back in July 2019 , contract had expired in July 2020 and have been on Telstra ever since (no longer in contract)

I wished to keep my number as it is perfect for me

I went into JB after work and signed up to this deal , got a new random number and made sure it was under the same account as my other telstra number. I home and once the new number was activated i messaged Telstra chat and requested i cancel the old number and move it to the new plan replacing the new number. And it was done in less than an hour

Texted myself using the new SIM card i got today and can confirm it is my old number :)

(Posting this in case it helps someone thinking of doing the same)

    • Can you please confirm exactly you asked the chat operator to do?

    • Think you're lucky one.
I'm currently dealing with one of the restart support told me to go and get jb to change….

      • im super glad it worked, as long as your desired number isnt on a contract they can cancel the number and apply it to the new service :) , i added chat log above

        • Yea after 1.5 days multiple chats finally got it sorted…. painful

          • @zipzap090: Seems as so I was definitely lucky, glad it worked out in the end. Still a ripper deal

          • +1

@zipzap090: Yes, it almost is always painful; this has been discussed many times. The chat people via the My Telstra app are very much hit and miss with far more miss going by evidence of all the discussion that is regular with every offer.

  • Not being able to add international call pack is not great. Any ideas on how to manage international calls (other than taking another number). Ofcourse, voip calls still work if there is internet at the other end.
