They do this every now and then at Wynyard too.

    • And in front of / around Town Hall.

Didn't expect them to give five masks.

    • masks can reduce the transmission of flu, covid, chlamydia and gonorrhoea. thanks

    • Still have to wear them on public transport

Why? I have plenty of masks ready to go in case of an outbreak, but if you don't have one … it makes no sense.

        We are very fortunate here.
I thought WA was rather extreme with the Covid precautions, but better too much than not enough, I guess.
Are the politicians trying to compensate for Ruby Princess fiasco? Too late.

        • It’s more “in case you forget” and public safety while taking public transport.

@TechAddict: I mean why wear masks at all? Might as well wear tiger-repellent in NSW.

Please understand I'm in WA where the only place I've seen mask-wearing is at the airport. So it seems a bit odd to us.
Unlike Europe, US etc. etc where the need for masks is obvious.

It seems people are offended by teh question, but have no answer. Is this politicised?

Yes they are. It is an excellent question that deserves answers rather than negs.

However masks are intended to protect others; tiger repellant to protect yourself. The former is more a civic duty than immediate self protection so that should go some distance in shaping opinions on the matter.

              Is this politicised?

Of course it is. everything is whether we know it or not.

The idea being that by the time an infected person tests positive, they may have already been in the community for some time. If people are wearing masks on PT, it reduces the likelihood of transmission during that period they were out and about.

    • Public transport is an enclosed place where you have to mix with a lot of people you don’t normally see.

Sure it’s getting annoying but I’d rather suffer masks for 30 mins per day than see another outbreak.

      • Of course. But where is the maths? Is this real medical advice, or politicians acting on gut hunches?

Looking over from WA, it does not make much sense. We had compulsory masks for a week after a hotel guard tested positive.
But it is not a long-term sustainable strategy. How many years will they keep it up? Risk now is as low as it will ever get, due to high testing rates and zero positive cases. People will get fatigued.

  • Why did you take 6? XD

    • +2

You don't take, you get given, by a person using tongs. They seem to be under instruction to give multiple masks to each individual.

Extra plastic pollution. Will likely end up on some poor penguin.

    • +3

At least the penguin won't catch COVID?

    Made in China?

    • hi rudolf how was borat

Masks are still mandatory on public transport… I've had a bus driver get angry and frustrated when someone is trying to argue that it was stupid. The one complaining immediately shut up when the driver asked "will you feed my wife and 3 kids if I get and can't work?".

And then there are these pharmacy shops at the entrance of QVB from townhall station selling a pair for $5. Total rip off!! 🤦🏻‍♂️

I mean, how hard is it to put them in freezer bags at least they cost like 65c for a pack of 100, at least make them look slightly hygienic
