Limit of speed camera testing

I am interested to know people's experience who were caught speeding or know someone. I will like to know how much above the speed limit you were driving (according to the penalty notice) when you were caught? I am not asking about what speed you thought you were driving.

I know that advertisement which says speed limit is 100+10-10 so dont waste your time telling that story. I am more interested in real life evidence.

    What?

A superb summary of my thoughts.

      • Anyone else disappointed mods didn't do anything this year?

        • +2

          Users making up for it?

@SF3: Mods: Don't do anything for April Fools
DiLs: "Fine, I'll do it myself "

  • +3

How far over were you when you got flashed?

  • +3

    42.

  • +1

    Tha fu……..!?!

  • Just go to the relevant govt department and ask for statistics on speeding fines.

  • I was caught for driving 58km/hr in a 50 zone, 58 - 50 = 8
$270 fine and 2 demerits, do not pass go. yada yada

    • -2

NSW $98 for under 10km no DP

      • Is that all? Failing to show a parking ticket in Sydney is a $116 fine…

      • +1

        In NSW; (from RMS website)

Road Rule 20, Exceed speed 10 km/h and under (other than a learner or provisional licence) $123, 1 Demerit, Double Demerit applicable: Yes

So, I dont know where you are getting no demerits and only $98…

        • Oh has it been increased, last time I read this rules is 4 years ago.

  • OP is in NSW.
I have heard that in Vic that 1kph over will get you a love letter. Not sure if that is true or current though.
As for NSW I believe there is a more sensible margin but exactly what it is I dont know.
Simple fix is just do the speed limit. ;-)

I might have an answer soon. I was going 63/64kmh past a mobile speed camera :(

      • +1

If that was the speed indicated by your speedo and not a GPS then you should be ok.
        Did it flash?

        • No flash since it was a mobile camera.

But yes speedo. Do you mean GPS in a phone? I understood those to be wildly inaccurate for speed measurements.

          • +1

@Caped Baldy: GPS is pretty good but it depends on where you are (tunnel, inner city with tall buildings, etc).
They are usually much more accurate than your car's speedo which can be out by up to 10% depending on many factors as well (tyre wear, tyre inflation, OD of non spec tyres, road temperature, etc).
In my car 110 on the GPS = 118 on the speedo.

            • @Cheeper: I've wondered this too. How do you know the GPS is more accurate?

              • +2

@Tekon: GPS uses the Doppler effect to measure speed.

It does not attempt to do distance/time.

Fun fact speed cameras have gps receiver in them to get accurate time.

                • @deme: Informative, never knew that. Cheers!

                • -2

@deme: They don't use the Doppler effect, they use triangulation.

                • +2

@deme: The Doppler effect makes a great Halloween costume.

                  • @MontyMacaw: Sheldon: Howard?

                    Howard: Yeah?

Sheldon: Your shoes are delightful. Where did you get them?

                    Howard: What?

                    Sheldon: Bazinga. I don't care.

      • So your speedo would have read 70.

Speedo's in cars are purposely inaccurate and overreport by a few km/h. Throw on google maps and you'll see it report your true speed as 3-5km/h less than what your speedo is saying.

    • +1

I haven't had one in Vic yet (expecting one soon), but I think it's 3km over. They subtract 3 from the "detected speed" and that's your "alleged speed". If the "alleged speed" is higher than the limit, you get a nice ticket.

      • That "detected speed"…?? As well as the 3km allowance I wonder if it also has a margin?

        • It's 3kph or 3%, whichever is more.

          • @oscargamer:

            …or 3%, whichever is more.

Do they actually specify this in the rules/legislation? Because with the maximum speed limit being 110km/h, there is no "more than" 3km/h (rounded to nearest digit)..

            • @bobbified: 3% of 100 = 3.3kph which is rounded up to 4kph

              • @oscargamer: aah right - very generous of them to round up instead of the nearest! 😂

                • @bobbified: I meant to write 3% of 110 is 3.3kph……but i can lift heavy things !

                  • @oscargamer: I didn't even notice the typo! .. until you brought it up! haha

OP is a shrink, maybe has a client who sped and in therapy…

  • Thanks to those who are giving relevant and sensible answers. for trolls, you can continue.

      • We need more people like you around these parts.

  • Had a friend caught for doing 60 in a 60 zone… NOT A TYPO.

    • +3

Sounds like your friend was making shit up.

      • There was a photo of it, so who knows. They may have developed some photoshop skills.

It's more likely a glitch in the system than them learning any discernable useful skill.

Last time in I was caught speeding was when I was living in Victoria and I was done for "under 10km over the limit." Mobile speed camera caught me at a detected 54km/h in a 50 zone, they subtracted 2km/h for leeway and I was fined for alleged 52km/h.

      I just realised that 100+10-10 probably means 100 ±10.
No idea what anything else in that sentence means

      • Even if it did, the speed limit isn't 100 everywhere and,

It's a limit full stop there is no 10 over.

There is driving too slow where it is dangerous but that's not 90 in a 100.

        • +1

Yeah makes no sense but I reckon that’s what OP meant

          • @FireRunner: Yeah good point, I think OP is just cooked.

  • +2

I know that advertisement which says speed limit is 100+10-10 so dont waste your time telling that story.

Okay, so as to not waste my time, here it goes as you have requested:

40+ 10-10 (Starting this at 40 for School Zones)
    50+ 10-10
    60+ 10-10
    70+ 10-10
    80+ 10-10
    90+ 10-10

    100+ which you have covered…

  • Fixed and mobile cameras will get you for 3+ over.

HWP are discretionary. Personally I've driven past a HWP doing just under 90 in an 80 without being stopped.

  • So don't waste our time with such idiotic ponderance

  • I recently got a ticket in queensland while driving down the hill with car running in curise control mode.it was over 11KM/ over the limit on a 60 road.1 demerit point and $177 fine.
