Unfortunately, this promotional offer is by invitation only.

  • So if I sell something on Ebay, I only have to pay postage no other fees ?

    • +1

Correct, and any listing upgrades you make.

    • -1

In a way yes, if the buyer pays with PayPal you'll have to pay the fee of approx 3.5-4% of the amount you sold the item for.

      • I don't think it makes a difference how they pay… I have sold a heap during promotion period and paid absolutely zero fees.
Outside of promotion you pay the same fee regardless of how customer pays

  • +3

I have never heard anyone describe this change as an improvement.
Generally you are giving more trust to eBay with no option to appeal elsewhere if you get ripped off or scammed by a buyer. I have also read some fairly dodgy sounding requirements regarding your bank details too, last time this came up.
They are offering a little bit of tinsel to distract you over now but eventually everybody will have to use this system.

    • +2

      Pros
You can sell 2 listings per month with absolutely no fees via Gumtree. This was not achievable before because PayPal would take a slice.

      Cons
      Fees are otherwise high
eBay holds your money for about 3 days.

      • +7

        Cons:
Now anytime ebay wants you to do something, they can withhold money until you do it. Given ebay's level of competence, you can expect a lot of them saying "You didn't do what we asked you, so we are restricting payment" followed by you saying "What? But you never asked me to do that!"

Insert multiple conversations with technical support reading from scripts, saying they'll fix it but nothing changing.

        • +1

          Yeah could absolutely happen.
I should caveat the free Gumtree listings too, they charge the fee and then refund it back 15 days later ….which is annoying

          • @cook99: Did you get the money back? I didn't

            • @lastkey: Only sold in the last 2 days so have a 2 week wait to find out.
Here is what they said via chat:

I do see the fianl value fee or the selling fee been charged for the item sold , in gum tree promotions we have to wait for 15 days for this fee to be auto credited back.

yes the gum tree has made changes to it and this is how it works now

Yes the fee will auto credit thats right to the bank acocunt as its mnaged payments now
If it doesnt get auto credited we will get it done for you manually to your bank account.

              • @cook99: Yes. They told me same but I didn’t get paid for an item sold on 10th March. Its more than 15 days now so looks like it gonna be manually which is another hassle then.

                • @lastkey: Yup definitely annoying, let's hope they sort it out to work properly in future

                • @lastkey: Well you were right, didn't apply automatically so contacted support to get it sorted. They asked for screenshots to prove I created via Gumtree, luckily I always take them because I don't trust eBay, how frustrating and annoying of them haha

    • +1

True. I've got till 12/04 to convert.

      • +2

I refrained from registering. They have bombarded me with Emails few times a week over many months, and have tried to call me on multiple occassions.

Finally they have disabled my ability to list new items. Doesn't phase me in the slightest. Fair enough, they forced my hand in further limiting my use as a buyer and seller on the platform (the later by force).

        Dear,

Your ability to create new listings on eBay has been suspended as you have not yet registered for managed payments. If you do not complete registration for managed payments by 15 April 2021, you will no longer be able to revise your existing eBay listings.

        • Should have no impact on you as a buyer, I am guessing?

        • +2

They tried something similar with PayPal in 2008 and the ACCC intervened:

          https://www.google.com/search?q=accc+ebay+paypal

What new angle is eBay approaching this from to avoid a repeat of that?

          • @Jabba the Hutt: I'm guessing the fact that they spun off PayPal and don't have the same control over Adyen as they did PayPal.

This won't affect buyers until 2023 when PayPal no longer becomes a payment option.

  • +3

No way I'm letting eBay in charge of my money, I'd rather not sell on the platform.

    • Yep. We're just waiting until they close us off then ditch it.

  • One item I sold, got damaged during transit. As it was managed payment so didn’t had cover from PayPal either. AusPost claim was a hassle as buyer had to take them item to their HO. So I just refunded and bore the brunt.

    • Are you sure you would have had any cover from PayPal? I had a incident where a buyer broke an item at home and tried to blame me/Australia post but it wouldn’t have flew, eBay however didnt give a shit, I waited for them to send it back to me and I had to refund item. Thankfully the damage was just cosmetic and the item still works (GPU)

  • You have to sell the item within the listed period as well (so don't forget to cancel!)

    • do we have option to cancel once promotion is over ?

      • +1

you have to end your listing manually

  • +1

    1) Does moving to manage payments disable option to pay via paypal for buyers ?

    2) Can anyone share costs in both scenarios for seller (managed vs paypal) and seller protection ?

  • +3

as someone who buys & sells as a hobby (collectibles etc) this whole new system is a gigantic turn off, which i think is what ebay were hoping for, they want to get rid of the smaller sellers on there. Been slowly happening for years & now this is the final stage of it. It's sad its now becoming more like one massive generic shopping mall whereas it actually used to be fun on there, more like going to a market & finding all sorts of weird & wonderful items, ah well, thats the way it is :(
